There is no other season of the year that I enjoy more. The stars in our children’s yes, the tears of gratitude in the eyes of parents and grandparents, the opportunity of being more thoughtful to others, the loving spirit that seems to pervade all, the smell of varied Christmas trees and packages surrounding them are all precious happenings. I always whisper a silent prayer of gratitude for having witnessed another Christmas. Yet, I must admit to mixed emotions. I desire to capture the happy memories, but there is always creeping within me those sad memories too. I think of the young mother who lost her 6- month-old son to SIDS, the senior citizen who was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, the sixteen-year-old girl who suffers from mental and physical abuse, the young father of two who just lost his wife to cancer, the poor family I visited this week who had no food for Christmas. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

In Bethlehem, Christmas Hymns are sung the year round. It is powerful reminder to every pilgrim visiting the place of Jesus’ birth that the spirit of Christmas, the love it so tenderly reveals, must be lived year-round.

I think of the young mother who lost her 6-month-old son to SIDS, the senior citizen who was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, the sixteen-year-old girl who suffers from mental and physical abuse, the young father of two who just lost his wife to cancer, the poor family I visited this week who had no food for Christmas.

Such examples will mean very little unless I find a way to understand the misery, the hurt feelings, the sufferings of those around me. These examples are warning to me to challenge the evil that causes them. I will make every effort to assist people to accept what cannot be changed. I will, at the same time, give of my time and energy to help people changed what can be changed. The love revealed in the birth of Jesus, must continue to live in my day to day living

St. Anthony’s News

I have an important message. On Tuesday January 9, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the lower hall. The Regional Bishop of the North Region, Bishop Mark O’Connell will address our parish in regard to the future of our parish. As you all aware the Archdiocese of Boston has been in the process of Collaborating Parishes. Bishop Mark will discuss with us the future of St. Anthony’s. If you have any concerns about what this means for St. Anthony’s Parish, please make sure you attend this meeting.

Envelopes for 2018: There has been some problems with the 2018 envelopes we are trying to fix the problem quickly. So please pay close attentions to the bulletins for upcoming months.

Housekeeping

Please it would be greatly appreciated if you could help us to keep our Church as well as the restrooms clean. We don’t have a facility manager who works on Saturday or Sunday. Thank you for all you do.

December 24 ~ Fourth Sunday of AdventToday’s Gospel is the wonderful story of the

Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. Over the years we have seen many artistic renditions of the Annunciation story. Take a moment today, before the festivities of Christmas get underway, to pray with your favorite image of this story and ask for Mary’s help by praying the “Hail Mary.”

BASIC CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

We have started a new program, namely “Basic Christian Community” (BCC) in our Parish. Basic Christian Community is the life style of early Christians. Few families gather at a home and they pray and reflect over the Word of God. It will enrich our lives and provide a good opportunity to pray for others. It will strengthen our relationship with one another. If anyone wants to have Basic Christian Community in their home, please contact Fr. Heniston

PeaceThe Hebrew bible uses a word for peace

is shalom. Shalom means peace. The connotation is positive. But most people in our world understand peace negatively as the absence of war, distress and suffering. The biblical concept of peace does not focus on the absence of war distress and suffering. Biblical peace is unrelated to circumstances and is not touched by what happens on the outside. One may be in the midst of great trials and still have biblical peace.

When Jesus appeared before Pilate, He was so calm, so serene, so controlled, and so at peace, that Pilate became greatly disturbed. Pilate said, "Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?" (John 19:10). Then in perfect peace Jesus replied, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above" (John 19:11). That's the kind of peace Jesus is talking about with disciples before His agony. Jesus says “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” (John 14:27) The peace Jesus is speaking of enables believers to remain calm in the most wildly fearful circumstances. It is an experiential (subjective) peace.

We can achieve peace which is not disturbed by external situation when we experience Risen Christ in our lives. The best model of biblical peace is St. Paul. No external circumstances disturb him. When he was stoned in Antioch (Acts.14:19) he did not put halt for his ministry. When he was in jail at Philippi he sang and remained confident that God was being gracious to him. Paul says it is a peace that surpasses comprehension.

Most people's pursuit of peace is only an attempt to get away from problems. That is why people seek peace through alcohol, drugs, or other forms of escapism. The fact is, apart from God, there is no real peace in this world. Godless individuals can never know true peace. They might know only a momentary tranquility.

Jesus shows us the proper response to His promise of peace, "Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful" (John

A Joy ever new, a joy which is shared

The great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. Whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall preys to it, and end up resentful, angry and listless. That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the Spirit

I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.” The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways, I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my redeeming embrace”.

How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy. Christ, who told us to forgive one another “seventy times seven” (Mt 18:22) has given us his example: he has forgiven us seventy times seven. Time and time again he bears us on his shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness which never disappoints, but is always capable of restoring our joy, he which impels us onwards!

Thanks solely to this encounter - or renewed encounter - with God’s love, which blossoms into an enriching friendship, we are liberated from our narrowness and self-absorption. We become fully human when we become more than human, when we let God bring us beyond ourselves in order to attain the fullest truth of our being. Here we find the source and inspiration of all our efforts at evangelization. For if we have received the love which restores meaning to our lives, how can we fail to share that love with others?

Fourth Sunday in Advent Christmas Time

Christmas is one of the most important days of the Church’s year, second only to Easter itself. It is the feast of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin "in carne" means "enfleshment"). It is a uniquely Christian teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar.

The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…including the fact that he was born to die for us.

Merry Christmas and God Bless Fr. Xavier
