As both have grown up along the Australian coastlines, water was one of their main elements that they both wanted to be seen everywhere on the site. Their contemporary designed home reflected both their tastes in design and also in lifestyle. A key aspect to the design is how the garden is so multifunctional. They wanted their garden to be something beautiful to look at during the day and vibrant at night time. They made it necessary factor that their garden could be used year round, so that they are able to entertain, regardless of the weather. Along with their want of water to surround the site, the clients required lush planting around the garden. A selection of hardy, low maintenance plants were chosen that look great year round. As the front of the site faces north, trees shade the house from the hot summers and therefore saving a lot of energy on air conditioning. The selection of the low maintenance, hardy plants was needed for the clients and the majority being indigenous planting. The 120,000 litre under- ground water tank at the back of the site means that the site collects all the rain water run off and is used for the watering of the plants, filling up of pool and ponds and water usage within the home also.

The concept of the landscape design came from a contemporary theme. This modern design works with the architecture of the building, so as to keep with the overall hopes of the client from the start. From the front entrances of the site, the clients are surrounded by water which fl ows from the water bubblers down the water walls and makes it way all the way to the back of the site, where it would be pumped back to the front to reuse the water again.

Front Garden Area The clients arrival at the entrance of their garden through their driveway or pedestrian gate, there lies a quite a unique entrance as they are surrounded by a series of water bubblers and water walls. Either at day or night the water features are an amazing spectacle. Moving around this sloping site, people can interact with the water wherever they move. All ponds throughout the site are at a depth of only 400mm deep and have a protective steel mesh underneath that cant not be seen but is there for safety purposes.

A wide exposed aggregate driveway is also in place so that the clients may be able to allow plenty of parking within the site when entertaining. The front pedestrian access leads from the gate way, over large paving stepping pads directly to the front entrance where another water wall runs along the path to the front door. From the front, the clients can see through their wide glass window onto a beautiful overfl owing water bowl.

The garden beds also bank up at gentle angles to work with the rest of the theme of the design. The plants beds follow the natural lines of the hardscape. This in turn has create a series of block planting throughout this large site where seasonal planting with come in bursts of bold colour to give interest throughout the year.

Site MaterialsWith the use of these materials and garden features, this garden gives the client the modern outdoor living space that they envisaged for their new home. From the front entrance of the prop-erty, water and planting surround the entire area and this theme fl ows through the site. The use of granite for paving and water wall, insures a durable garden to look as good in years time as it does when it is in-stalled. Also recycled wide hardwood decking combines with the paving through the site. The glass pool and spa, modern outdoor living room, pool bar and kitchen and also the feature water bowls combine perfectly with the natural materials to give the garden the modern style that the clients desired to match their modern home and lifestyle.

Site PlantsThe layout of the planting within the site follows the natural line of the hardscape to create interesting mass block forms. The clients brief for the design, was that they wanted the planting to be very bold, beautiful and hardy planting, that are very low maintenance. The large block plant-ing that is now created, is planted out with planting that gives year long colour and is very harsh climate where the plants need to withstand intense heat. Watering of plants is to done by a 120,000 litre underground water tank placed at the bottom of the site that catches all of the site run off water.Placement of trees of the site add depth, colour and also in certain parts, create well needed shade for when the sun is coming through the front windows into the kitchen during the summer months.

The outdoor living room with bi-fold doors allows for the clients to use it day or night. From the master bedroom windows, the clients look out to a feature water wall that works with the angled lines of the design .The water moves along the top of the wall and fl ows down the granite stone face into the pond below. Large open decking and lawn spaces allows the clients to lounge in the open and admire the several water features as they give the garden a fantastic effect during both the day and night.

Back Garden and Outdoor Entertainment Area Side Pergola AreaAlong the left side of the house, there is a series of large stepping pads that go over the water, that is fl owing from the front to the back garden. These series of stepping stones lead the clients out to the side open seating area. This open plan pergola is a tranquil space that is separated from the back garden and has its own unique feel. The clients can come out to the side seating area for their breakfast or to read a book, whilst hearing the soothing sound of the overfl owing water from the feature water bowl into the pond below. This open pergola itself is a feature, as it too ties in with the angular design of the entire site.
