Fleet News

by Michael Dobrzensky, Volunteer

Ahoy! The second of the three race Lopez Series was

successfully completed on March 8th. We had a total of 7 boats participate, with 4 Monohulls, and 3 multihulls.

The monohulls consisted of 2 Picnic Cats, a Neptune 16, and a laser Radial.

The multihulls were a mix of 1 Hobie 18, 1 Hobie Wave, and 1 Trimaran.

Fortunately, this was a ‘dry’ set of races because nobody took an unintentional swim in any of the 5 races (too cold!)

Charlie Nichols took 1st place in the Monohull 100+ division. Will Bellis took 1st place in the Monohull <100 division. And, Tom Sinnickson took 1st place in the Multihull division.

The race committee consisted of Reid Hester as the primary race officer (PRO), with Judy Bellis, Bill Deviny, and Michael Dobrzensky rounding out the committee.

Keith Pellemeier provided the most import of the race support functions: Lunches! Thank you Keith, we all worked up an appetite during the day.

Pat Mullen and Jeff Blauer provided Chase boat services. Safety first!

I have been informed that the third and final April Lopez Races have been postponed. Bummer, but we need to stay safe.

Signed,A Volunteer

From the Director

Hello SLYC members.

Coast Guard AuxiliaryOn March 7th and 8th I had the opportunity to attend a

2-day navigation class given by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The class was given by a few different instructors but mainly from Joe Fram VFC, FSO-IT. The workshop consisted of lectures, slides, and hands-on exercises using charts and navigational tools. It emphasized the importance of being

able to chart and navigate without electronics. There were also instructions on electronic navigational tools. Not only was the class very informative, but I found the way it was presented made it enjoyable and a fun way to learn.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary has many other classes you can take including the basic boating course the state of California is requiring all boaters to have.

Hello SLYC members. As a new Director of SLYC, my

first event as Officer on Deck was the Brunch held on March 1, 2020. I wanted everything to go smoothly…and it did!

Yacht Club members were treated to a delicious Sunday Brunch on March. Chef Debra Collins-Johnson put together a lavish meal consisting of all locally sourced products. The fluffy scrambled eggs were made from the 16 dozen eggs fresh from a farm in See Canyon, the delicious sausages, linguisa and apple, came from local sources, as did the cornbread muffins served with butter and honey. Debbie was up at dawn to make myriads

of luscious quiches, both Quiche Lorraine and a vegetarian quiche. She even made a green salad that complemented the meal. There was even rich French Toast! The club was decorated with cheerful red and white checked tablecloths,

real red napkins holding individual sets of silverware, and magnificent huge yellow sunflowers surrounded by packets of seeds of turnips, spinach, eggplant etc. for you gardeners. At the end of the serving table were baskets full of fresh apples, tangerines and lemons for the taking, paper bags included.

You can’t have a brunch without Bloody Marys and Mimosas! Our bar hosts, Douglas Anthony, Shad and Shelley Springer were up to the task (happy to oblige). Thank you all!

It was truly an excellent event. We are all so grateful to Debbie for her extraordinary

efforts and that of her hard working team of assistants to make the March 1, 2020 San Luis Yacht Club Sunday Brunch so outstanding. Oh, and for my part in it—I'm looking forward to the next one.

Power Report

by Dave Lipanovich, Power Captain

Ahoy!Chase continued to run great for the last lake race

thanks to the tune-up Commodore Stewart gave it at the

beginning of the season, unfortunately with the April race cancellation it will be sitting for a while. I’ll work on getting Chase down to Avila over the next month so it will be ready to go when the world opens up again, until then—everyone stay healthy!
