As the son of a farmer, I’ve always been interested in innovative farming techniques, especially aquaponics. When I learned how INMED Partnerships for Children is using aquaponics to combat the problem of world hunger, I wanted to be a part of it! I’ve seen how aquaponics can transform communities right here in Jamaica.

IN THE RACE TO STOP POVERTY AND HUNGER, AQUAPONICS IS A WINNER!Take the lead with Michael Frater, sprinter with the world-record-setting Jamaican relay team.

Michael Frater is known for his celebrated accomplishments as a sprinter. He’s been called the “backbone” of Jamaica’s 4x1 relay team, setting the world record and Olympic record at the 2012 London Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics. But few know that Michael Frater grew up on a farm, now owns his own farm and plans to one day become a farmer. It’s his farming background that led Frater to support and endorse the INMED Aquaponics International Conference.

Traditional farming is typically out-of-reach for the physically disabled, who are unable, or find it difficult, to bend to the ground to dig, plant or harvest. In rural areas where farming is the primary source of income, mobility problems can be devastating to a struggling family. Aquaponics is particularly suited to the needs of the physically disabled, as the units are situated at waist height and require minimal physical effort to maintain. Through aquaponics, disabled farmers have the opportunity to learn new techniques, replacing traditional methods that are physically challenging to perform, enabling them to increase their productivity and income generation. INMED has installed aquaponic units for disabled cooperative groups in South Africa and Jamaica. Your tours at the conference will include a visit to one such group.

INMED Partnerships for Children is dedicated to establishing sustainable food programs that improve food security, conserve natural resources, adapt to climate change, and provide for income generation. To that end, INMED has adopted the innovative food production technique known as aquaponics, combining aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics (soilless crop production).

Come to Jamaica in September and learn, see and experience how it’s done! Visit www.inmed.org for more info.

INMED’S AQUAPONIC SYSTEMS ARE TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES BY:

• Strengthening the ability of youth, farmers, fishermen and others to understand and respond to the effects of climate change

• Inspiring and training the younger generation to grow food in an innovative, new way

• Providing new and adaptive opportunities for income generation

• Strengthening the capacity of local organizations to protect the ecosystem while ensuring food security
