Vietnam’s Vast Continental ShelfVietnam’s continental shelf covers an area of approximately one million square kilometers, comprising seven major Tertiary basins and group of basins: Song Hong, Phu Khanh, Cuu Long, Nam Con Son, Malay-Tho Chu basins and Hoang Sa, Truong Sa group of basins.
Vietnam Ranks Third In South-East Asia For Petroleum ResourcesWith nearly 40 years of operation and development, Vietnam’s oil and gas industry has produced almost one billion barrels of crude oil and 300 billion cubic feet of natural gas, as well as attracted over $5 billion (US) of foreign capital for the petroleum exploration and production. Furthermore, a large amount of capital has been invested in the downstream sector and related infrastructure. Vietnam ranks third in Southeast Asia for petroleum resources. Oil and gas are anticipated in almost 50 fields and prospects, with reserves of approximately 4.5 billion barrels of oil and 23 tcf gas.

Vung Tau, Vietnam’s Largest Oil Producing Province Vung Tau is located in the south of Vietnam (just an hour boat ride from Ho Chi Minh), situated at the tip of a small peninsula. It plays a significant role in Vietnam’s offshore oil industry. Vũng Tàu is the only petroleum base of Vietnam where crude oil and natural gas exploitation activities dominate the city’s economy and contribute principal income to Vietnam’s budget and export volume. New Oil Refinery Planned In Vung TauA US $3.7 billion project to build Long Son oil refinery complex in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province would complete its first Phase in 2011 and the full project would be completed in 2013. When completed, Long Son Refinery would be hailed as the 3rd largest petrochemical refinery complex in Vietnam. (Source: VNA)
Natural Gas Refinery To Expand Storage Facilities in Vung TauThe Petroleum Equipment Assembly and Metal Structure Co Ltd and the Petechim Joint Stock Co will join forces to enlarge the storage facilities of the natural gas condensate refinery at Cai Mep Industrial Park in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. The work, at a cost of VND283 billion ($14 million), will add 45,700cu.m to the storage capacity, bringing total capacity to 76,700cu.m.v (Source: Viet News)
