Tour Vietnam’s startup scene...at Slush! Vietnam’s tech and startup scene is developing at a running tiger’s pace, thanks to favourable conditions. Policy upgrades, foreign interest in investment, and above all, a multi million tech-savvy, young population are supporting this growth. For international collaborators, and Finns especially, the market presents a scene worth a look...and one can take a mini-tour of Vietnam startups at Slush 2016 in Helsinki.

� A favourable climateBusiness policy and legislation in Vietnam has recently turned favourable towards startups. The government’s target is to exponentially grow the number of startups and related services by 2020 and brand Vietnam as a “Startup Nation”. Strong ecosystems have emerged in three, major commercial hubs of Vietnam from North to South: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang. The southern location, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon), is particularly aggressive; in 2016 the city launched an EUR 40 million program to support startups. A free trade agreement with the EU is forming and expected to be established in a matter of years. In preparation for these goals, work is being done in Vietnam to ease market entry and investment.

� Local efforts fueled with foreign models and investmentThe past two years have shown a sharp rise in local VC’s, incubators, accelerators, and startup activities, all drawing experience and best practices from models abroad, such as the US, Israel, and Finland. Successes, like LOZI.VN, with its ad supported and rapidly expanding meal app, are part of the story.

On top of active, local efforts, international companies and investors are increasing activity in the startup scene, in a market with a population of 93 million, where 50% are under age 45. US and Singaporean VC firms, including 500.CO have launched operations in Vietnam. All indicators point to a market with potential for the long-term.

� Focus on tech and impactVietnam is portraying strength e-commerce, B2B and B2C internet services, mobile and web apps, fintech, automation, and ag-tech, to name growth sectors. At least 30 million smartphones are in use notably, and as expected in a developing country, businesses in Vietnam often focus on solving pressing problems in their operating environment, making the market an interesting one for impact investment.
