The wood selected to build ships is unique in many ways. It must grow for hundreds of years before it is sturdy enough to use as ship wood. The tree encounters rains and storms, becoming old growth heartwood that is much more stable and dry than the typical “sap” wood found today. This wood is used to build wooden ships that endure even more years of exposure to the sea and the elements. Eventually, these ships are retired but rather than making them landfill the wood is reused (reclaimed). Reclaimed wood is distinguished from recycled wood or reused wood in that it is usually remanufactured in some manner for reuse in a new form. It is transformed from one incarnation to the next.
