How does the Victory Mask Compare?

Masks are worn for both Source Control (SC) to retard spewing out virus and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent the wearer from inhaling the aerosolized virus.

This analysis is a summary of available evidence showing the effectiveness of commonly used masks as SC or PPE. This information is derived from data available from the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/commentary-masks-all-covid-19-not-based-sound-data) Victory Mask information from Augustine Surgical Inc.

*Respirators only work as PPE when they are the right size and have been fit-tested to demonstrate an adequate seal around the face.

The Victory Mask is not N95-certified. N95 testing examines breathability and performs a sodium-load test at high flow rates. The electrostatic filter used with the Victory Mask is not designed to be used in heavily particle-laden industrial environments, and for this reason does not meet N95 designation. To pass N95 salt-load tests, N95s require a meltblown material layer to block the filter from loading with NaCl particles. This simulates particle-laden industrial environments. The downside of this type of test is that the meltblown layer significantly reduces the breathability of the filter material, which forces more air around imperfect seals. It is our belief that the N95 salt-load test is detrimental to the design of PPE used for non-industrial applications.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    Q: What’s a “Respiratory Shield?”

A: It’s more than a mask, more than a respirator, and more than a shield. Respirators, like N95s, squeeze so tightly that the wearer’s face can be bruised…or even scarred. Traditional cloth or paper masks are a barrier to splashes, droplets, and biological fluids and protect others from the wearer’s coughs and sneezes, but fit so loosely that they provide little pro-tection to the wearer. Face shields are simply a wall—a barrier to particles.

The Victory Mask improves on all 3. The respirator portion seals gently against the mouth and nose, filtering both exhalation and inhalation. The PET shield blocks aerosolized droplets. Together, they mask the face…protecting against dangerous airborne particles.

Q: Is the Victory Mask NIOSH-certified?

A: No—and it doesn’t need to be NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is a branch of the CDC that certifies respirators to the N95 standard, among others. The Victory Mask is not an N95. Because it does not injure the face, but still provides excellent protection, it is (in our opinion) much better than an N95 for non-industrial applica-tions.

Q: What is the NIOSH N95 testing?

A: N95 certification is essentially an industrial standard and requires passing three tests that examine valve leakage, breathability, and a sodium load test.

Q: How was the Victory Mask tested?

A: The filtration material used in the Victory Mask was tested by Nelson Labs, an independent testing agency, to the stan-dards outlined in the technical data sheet.

Q: How often should I replace the Victory Mask’s filter?

A: How often you should replace your filter depends on usage and the environment. For general use, the filter should last approximately two weeks. In heavily polluted environments, you may need to switch the filter more often. In high-risk situ-ations, like hospitals, follow institutional protocols.

Q: Can the filters be cleaned and reused?

    A: No.

Q: Can the Victory Mask (other than the filter) be disinfected?

A: Yes. The Victory Mask can be cleaned through routine disinfection protocols.

Q: Will the Victory Mask help protect me against COVID-19?

A: Help? Of course, it will…and much better than the cloth and paper masks often seen in public. Provide absolutely protec-tion? No.

Most masks do not filter particles of the size of the COVID-19 virus, and because they do not seal well to your face, they will allow virus particles to pass around the filter.

The Victory Mask’s soft, closed-cell foam provides an exceptional seal. The filter material is highly efficient at removing harmful particulate matter.

Of course, no mask or respirator can protect you perfectly from infection. Filtering respiration and blocking aerosols are just a part of protecting yourself against the risk of infection. It is important to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as well as avoiding close contact with others who may be infected.
