Though alleged ter-rorist John Nuttall initially spoke of fir-ing homemade rock-ets at the B.C. parlia-ment buildings, his plan changed after the Boston Marathon bombings in mid-April 2013, according to an undercover RCMP offi-cer who befriended the man accused in a 2013 Canada Day terror plot.

The police operative, who cant be identified, began his testimony Tuesday at the trial of Nuttall and his wife Amanda Korody in B.C. Supreme Court in Van-couver.

He said Nuttall told him pressure-cooker bombs like those used in Boston (where five people were killed and 280 injured) would be cheaper and sim-pler than the militant Islamic Hamas-style rockets hed talked about prior.

The officer told the 14-member jury he befriended Nuttall at a gas station he fre-quented on Scott Road and 96 Avenue in Sur-rey, presenting himself as an Arab business-man who was search-ing for his niece.

Nuttall was ready to help, the undercover agent testified, and the two spent about two

hours together, with Nuttall showing him where teens would hang out.

There was no men-tion in court as to why Nuttall became a target by police investigators.

The officer testified Nuttall almost imme-diately began sharing his extreme Islamic views and plans to perform jihad, quot-ing deceased terror-ist leader Osama bin Laden on their first meeting.

The officer said he warned Nuttall about his openness, remind-ing him theyd only just met and questioning how he knew he could trust him.

Nuttall and Korody are accused of plot-ting to set off bombs outside the Victo-ria legislature build-ings on Canada Day 2013, when thousands of people would be there to celebrate the nations birthday. They are charged with mak-ing or possessing an explosive device, con-spiracy to commit an indictable offence, conspiring to com-mit murder and know-ingly facilitating terror-ist activity. They have pleaded not guilty.

The RCMP witness told the jury he met with Nuttall, and later, Korody, several times between March and June 2013 and that he never had to encour-age Nuttall to talk about his plan.

    The officer said Nut-

tall talked about the men accused in the Boston bombings, as well as those accused in the Via Rail bomb plot in Ontario. He was upset, said the witness, because imams at local mosques were critical of the accused instead of supporting them.

Korody, the officer testified, wasn't around much initially but became more involved as the plot proceeded.

The trial began Feb. 2, but was adjourned until Tuesday.

The undercover wit-ness is the first to be called by the Crown, which contends Nut-tall and Korody made and planted pressure-cooker bombs in two garden planters out-side the parliament buildings, timed to go off at 10 a.m. and 10:15

    a.m.Police made sure

they didnt detonate (by providing fake plas-tic explosives) and Nut-tall and Korody were arrested at a hotel in Abbotsford on July 1, 2013.

Though they called themselves al-Quaeda Canada, the Crown doesnt believe the pair had support, or that any terrorist groups even knew about them.

The trial contin-ues. Its expected to last more than four months.

Volunteers serving with Victoria St. John Ambulance are busy preparing to deliver medical first response ser-vices at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

From Feb. 13 to March 1, St. John personnel are among the more than 4,000 volunteers who will lend their skills to the games.

Provincewide, members from St. John Ambulance have answered the call of duty said St. John Victoria Board chair Doug Angrove.

We are proud that several volunteers from our Victo-ria Brigade will be providing expert medical first response at this tremendous event.

The 2015 Canada Win-ter Games will be the larg-est multi-sport and cultural event to ever be held in Prince George and northern British Columbia.

For many, its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the largest multi-sport and cultural event for youth in the nation said vol-unteer David Valentine.

I am inspired by the determination these athletes bring to their sport and Im proud to play a small role in the Games success.

Valentine is among several St. John Ambulance mem-bers who will travel to Prince George in the coming days to volunteer at the Games. He also volunteered at the Com-monwealth Games in Vic-toria, the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and the Canada Winter Games in Kamloops.

Its my way of giving back to B.C. for all that Ive enjoyed in my lifetime says Valentine. I originally received my St. John first aid training in 1963 and Ive been involved ever since. To learn more about St. John Ambulance and other vol-unteer initiatives, please go online to sja.ca.

Within one week of meeting Birgit Freybe, Robert Bateman says he knew he was in love.

More than 43 years later, the two are happily married artists, living on Saltspring Island.

Robert and Birgit met in September, 1971 after Robert hired Birgit to teach with him at Lord Elgin High School, now Robert Bateman High School, in Burlington, Ont.

I fell in love with Bob's thoughts more than anything; he has a really good way of conceptually explaining what has happened in an interesting way, said Birgit, 68, from her and Robert's studio on Saltspring Island. It didn't hurt that he was very good looking.

Robert and Birgit worked every day together as art teachers, and they quickly fell in love.

For their first Valentine's Day together in 1972, Robert and Birgit made a decision that would start a long-standing,

romantic tradition.Right at the very beginning, we had made

the decision because we are artists, that we do not believe in buying a Valentine's gift, said Birgit.

Instead, they express their love through handmade gifts.

These gifts are now on display at the Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria until Feb. 28.

Mine have been things centred around one heart, usually with all kinds of little things connected to the heart, said Robert, 84.

At first they were your typical little valentines, and then they became a little more big, then they became objects, said Birgit.

One year, Robert put a photo of the two of them at the Great Wall of China in a heart in the middle, then put various pictures of Birgit in circles around the heart.

Each one represents something about her that I consider a big advantage for me, said Robert.

He described some of them as Birgit being the perfect travel companion, being

their environmental conscience, having a perceptive eye and getting dolled up.

Birgit's gifts often involve a collage that represents their life over the last year. She includes elements such as brochures from their travels and her own drawings.

Robert and Birgit have always kept the gifts on display on their walls all year round. They also have books in which they glue the Valentine's projects now, since they began to run out of wall space.

Although many of the gifts are personal and intimate, Birgit said they have never minded showing them off.

We wear our hearts on our sleeves, she said.

Robert added, We're both artists, and we're both romantic, which is probably one of the reasons why we fell in love.

The hardest part is not coming up with a new idea every year, but finding the time to do it in secret, said Birgit.

Even right at this moment, we're sitting together in the same studio. I see Bob over there at his phone, and he's looking over back at me.

Robert added he estimates they were about 25 feet apart during the interview.

And that's all the time, 24 hours a day, said Birgit.

Although they will have been married for 40 years on Aug. 1, Robert and Birgit's love for each other is unfading and unmistakable.

Even though she's 68, she looks like a 17-year-old girl the way the light's shining on her right now, said Robert.

The Robert Bateman Centre is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12.50 for

adults, $8.50 for seniors and students, $6 for youth aged 8 to 18 and $25 for a family with two adults and two kids.

BBB prepares launch of business directoryKevin LairdVictoria News

The Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island is set to launch its 2015 directory celebrating business excellence.

The bureau publishes its list-ings of accredited businesses on Vancouver Island annually.

These are businesses that consumers really need to be using in terms of trust, said president Rosalind Scott, who is based in Victoria.

For us [BBB], we always get excited to take a look at this directory of great businesses.

A business must go through a detailed vetting process in order to be accredited its not as simple as just joining the Better Business Bureau.

In order to qualify, a business must have been in operation for at least a year, have no com-plaints logged against it, have established a positive presence in the marketplace and have a good rating with the BBB, based on specific criteria.

Businesses must maintain its accreditation once its earned it. If a business doesnt keep to our standards then its accreditation is revoked, Scott said.

Nobody can walk in the door, write a cheque and say I want to be accredited.

One of the ways the BBB celebrates businesses that have gone above and beyond

is through the annual Torch Awards.

These arent awards that say a business is good because the majority of our accredited busi-ness have an A+ rating, Scott said.

Instead, the awards are for businesses that stand out from the crowd, such as in commu-nity service.

Awards are given to both win-ners and finalists, but there are no formal categories. The cat-egories are based on the types of nominations.

Each year the BBB receive several thousand nominations from across Vancouver Island. This Years Torch Awards gala is Nov. 6 in Victoria.

For more information on the Better Business Bureau of Van-couver Island, please go online to bbb.org/vancouver-island or call 250-386-6348.

The BBB business directory will be available across Van-couver Island at the end of the month.

Victorias Christ Church Cathedral has a new rector and someone quite familiar with the city.

Rev. M. Ansley Tucker was appointed by Bishop Logan McMenamie.

Tucker is the first woman to hold the position in the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia. She takes on her new role July 1. She is also the Dean of Columbia, the second highest clergy member,

after the bishop.Tucker is currently rector of

Christ Church in Calgary and archdeacon of Bow Valley.

She was born and spent her early years in Victoria.

I welcome this opportunity to build on the cathedrals mission to engage both the church and society in fruitful dialogue and service, she said.

As well as serving as rector to the large cathedral parish,

the dean is the second- ranking clergy in the diocese, and nor-mally serves as the episcopal commissary or deputy when the bishop is away.

The position became open when McMenamie was named bishop last March.

Parents of babies and younger children have another job to put on their to-do list: get their child vaccinated.

But unlike the situation where dentists remind their patients every six months to get a teeth cleaning, there is no similar immunization reminder for parents except for those they set up for themselves.

And this is a problem.Certainly, health authorities

face challenges from immunization foes who fear that vaccinations may be dangerous or that mandatory vaccinations violate their rights or religious principles. But by far the biggest obstacle to greater participation rates is that people forget to get their childs shots at 12 and 18 months.

The vaccinations are free but its up to parents to keep track of this information either by mental notes, signing up for free text reminders or downloading the ImmunizeCA app to keep track.

By the time kids get into school, the process becomes easier because boosters are offered for children. So, parents of younger children have to be diligent on following through on this task. For that to happen, they need to know that missing out on the 12-month vaccination, which includes the first dose of mmr [measles, mumps and rubella] vaccine to protect against measles, their children could be at risk for a very serious disease and they could pass the illness on to some other child. Although the disease has been virtually eradicated in Canada, there is still a chance of catching it from an unvaccinated visitor from overseas.

No one said raising a child would be easy and until a simpler way of immunizing non school aged kids is found, parents will have to take on this responsibility themselves.

Readers respond: Camping, development, downtownLow-income families need break on camping

Re: Camping harder to afford (Our View, Feb. 6)

It is a shame that the B.C. government is making what was once an affordable vacation for families, further out of range for low-income families.

Even though camping rates are less than hotels, it is still too expensive when considering the extras that are needed for a two-week vacation in the woods.

Perhaps the government could come up with a coupon for low-income families, so those kids actually get to go somewhere over the summer.

I get that politicians have no idea what its like to truly not be able to afford what they think is a cheap holiday.

I wish theyd get what it feels like to those kids that cant go and the parents trying to do the best they can with not enough.

I wishing they could walk a mile in those shoes.

If hotel isnt repainted it sets a precedent

Re: Developers battle with city not unusual (Letters, Feb. 6)

I beg to differ with letter-writer Mel Wright.

What is now literally a black mark on the city is not awesome. It is downright ugly.

If developers get so frustrated, then I suggest they go to Vancouver, the concrete jungle.

Anything not the norm is not allowed is a bit of a generalization and the only way the highrises look the same is that there is a height restriction, thank goodness!

One of the reasons why people live in and visit Victoria is because of its beautiful, user-friendly area, authentic heritage buildings and facades downtown.

It is an insult with what the developer, Jordan Milne, is trying to get away with.

Milne said: We painted the building with heritage colours under the Benjamin Moore heritage colour scheme.

(Victoria News, Jan. 30) Really? How stupid does

he think people are? So he consulted with Benjamin Moore heritage colour strips, but not with the city knowing the Dalton (Dominion) Hotel was a heritage site?

The city should force him to change what he knowingly shouldnt have done in the first place.

If he isnt forced to repaint in designated heritage colours, it sets a precedent and others are sure to follow.

Then, not only do we have a downtown where businesses are continually closing, well have an ugly ghost town of a downtown where no one will want to venture. Even sadder possibilities than whats happening now.

    Elizabeth LubinVictoria

    City should stop subsidizing properties

One idea for Mayor Lisa Helps in regards to all the vacant

buildings downtown is to work with new or existing businesses interested in relocating or for start up assistance for them directly instead of giving landlords more profits that they already receive.

The problem downtown is operators are unable to stay viable and go out of business. Rent is a major factor.

What is not a problem is landowners going bankrupt with investment property in the downtown. So the tax base is not a problem for owners nor are empty buildings for them.

That being said the city could look at buildings they own downtown that are leased out and see if any of their tenants would like to move.

The city in a way is subsidizing business already with buildings they manage. So moving businesses like these or charging competitive rent in those locations would help finance an initiative for the downtown core.

Calgary poet Erin Dingle is part of the all-star ensemble performing at the Victoria Spoken Word Festival.

    Andrea PeacockVictoria News

Somewhere between a Shake-spearean soliloquy and freestyle rap, spoken word is about being interactive and fun, says Missie Peters, Victoria Spoken Word Fes-tival director.

The fifth annual Victoria Spoken Word Festival runs until March 1. This year, 12 favourite poets from previous years are returning to form an all-star ensemble.

[The poets] take workshops every day on something that has nothing to do with spoken word, and then they do a show inspired by what they learned that night, said Peters.

On Feb. 24, the ensemble will have one hour to write and perform poems based on a secret prompt. This years theme will have some-thing to do with brewing, Peters hinted. The audience will then judge which poem they liked best.

Other events include a meta-phors and monologues night on Feb. 25, and poems done in collabo-ration with dancers from Victorias Broken Rhythms on Feb. 26.

Each poet in the ensemble will work with a dancer to put poetry and dance together in a perfor-mance, said Peters.

Victorias new poet laureate Yvonne Blomer and the citys youth poet laureate Zoe Duhaime will also be performing at the festival.

Theres always something that youre not expecting, said Peters. [Spoken word] is somewhere on the continuum of a Shakespearean soliloquy, which has all of that emo-tive power and deep visceral feel-ing, and freestyle rap, which has all of this immediacy, rhythm and a lot of relevancy to our own world.

Tickets are on sale at ticket-rocket.org/vswf2015.

A festival pass for all shows is $45, while single tickets are $15 or $12 for students.

Festival passes must be pre-sented 10 minutes before show-time; after that, admission is not guaranteed.

Performances are at Intrepid The-atre, 1609 Blanshard St., and Metro Studio, 1411 Quadra St.

The full size truck market is big business for automakers and a big deal for the businesses and people who depend on them. For almost five decades, the Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck, with little chance they will squander that crown soon. In fact, Ford finished 2014 with over 126,000 F-Series sold and that set a new record. RAM was the second best-selling vehicle with more than 88,000 sold. What has been happening, over the last few years, is a strong shift from General Motors to RAM in terms of establishing the second best-selling truck brand. The rise in RAM popularity traces back to a few key changes over the last several years, from muscular styling to class-leading interiors, a refined ride, plus engine and transmission advancements. New for the RAM line is a V6 turbocharged diesel in the 1500 or half-ton segment.LooksWhat RAM has been able to do is capture buyers imaginations with styling. The big and bold grille is even bigger than last models but has been integrated better into the front of the truck. Depending on the trim the grille finish can be chrome, painted or with a different insert. Be-hind the grille are active shutters that close at higher speeds to help send the wind around the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency. There is now a longer side step, which helps reduce buffeting down the side of the trucks, also to aid in fuel economy. One option that makes life easier to live with is the $1,500 air suspension

that lowers for easier entry into the RAM or loading into the bed. This system also automatically lowers at speeds over 100 km/h reducing aerodynamic drag and, yet again, improving fuel econo-my. The opposite is true, at lower speeds and for off-road duties; the air suspension can be raised for better ground clearance. InsideTodays modern truck is no longer just a vehicle for work; the level of refinement and luxury found in todays rigs is something to behold. My test unit RAM 1500 LaRAMie Quad Cab 4X4 had a starting price of $51,595 but with a long list of extras from keyless entry and start, to full leather

seats, power moon roof and the larger 8.4-inch uConnect screen, the total came to just over $63,000. Not cheap, but man there is a lot of truck here. The interior is rich looking and feels first rate, from the buttons to the switches and materials covering the cabin. And the room is impressive for all passengers, front and back. In addition to the optional 8.4-inch Uconnect communications and entertainment screen, there is a standard large 7-inch screen behind the steering wheel for fully customizable instant information readouts. DriveThe biggest change for RAM includes the first diesel engine found in a light duty 1500 pickup truck. This is an Italian designed engine that has been used extensively in Europe in Jeep prod-

ucts like the Grand Cherokee. With 420 lb.-ft. or torque, this new EcoDiesel has the same out-put as Fords Ecoboost but not the same towing capacity. Rated at 9200 lbs. this truck will be perfect for buyers who want impressive fuel economy and good towing capacity; a balance of usability and thriftiness. This engine has not been rated yet for fuel economy but, thanks to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, the new EcoDiesel is going to get better numbers than the already class-leading gasoline V6 RAM. Having driven both the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel and this RAM, I find the gearing and attitude of the RAM much more dynamic and actually inspiring to drive. In real world driving situations, this big luxurious truck can actually return fuel economy of 10L/100km without babying the engine.

VerdictRAM has seen huge sales growth over the last few years due to constant improvements instead of waiting years to update its rigs. It

started with dynamic exterior design, followed by class leading interior, then an 8-speed automatic and now

a Diesel. There is even an off-road ready RAM, just shown in Detroit, due to arrive called the Rebel. The RAM EcoDiesel has been selling very well and Chrysler claims they will put this truck up against the new aluminum F-150 for top dog in the fuel economy race. Good times to be looking for a truck.

Montebello, Quebec The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek, Forester and Outback have no problem showing the snow who is the boss. They dont even break a sweat if youre commuting on surfaces that yield minimal traction or when putting the Subaru Sym-metrical AWD system through its paces on a winter off-road course.Lets take a moment to talk about what makes Subarus system so potent in the snow or on slippery surfaces. To start, Subaru designed its AWD system for perfect balance. The boxer engine, transmission, and differentials create a symmetrical layout left to right. This increases stability in every situation, as there is less weight transfer from side to side. Also, unlike the competitors, each vehicle is designed from the ground up to have a symmetri-cal AWD system as a standard feature. This makes the chassis and powertrain a harmonious match. Other competitors often start with a 2WD system and add AWD to the same chassis. Its that kind of symmetry and engineering that instills confi-

dence in Subaru owners.More than 96 percent of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today. The symmetry allows for predict-able and stable power delivery to each wheel, which was apparent in my test drive. With the traction control (VDC) on, you might experience a little bit of slippage if you go into a corner too hot.But within moments, youll have your back end back where it should be. Yes, its a little bit of a killjoy if youre honing your skills to qualify for a drivers seat in WRC, but for 99.9 percent of the owners, its a saving grace. Subarus active systems do their best to keep the driver and its passengers feeling relaxed and calm behind the wheel. Such was the case as the temperatures in Quebec plummeted below -15C. The frigid yet abundantly sunny day seemed like a perfect pair for taking the aforementioned Subarus for a test.Starting the day with the XV Crosstrek, which has an MSRP of $24,995, was a treat. This light-on-its-feet crossover has charm and character. Even with the available CVT transmission, its pleasant to drive and has the ingredients to make it a desirable all-season kind of vehicle.

Next came the Forester. At a starting MSRP of $25,995, this five-passenger Subaru has some great qualities. Its high seating position elevates the driver to have a great field of vision and the roomy interior and excellent cargo capacity off 974L (seats up), or 2,115 L (seats down) sure fits a lot of stuff inside.Lastly, and my favourite of the batch, was the all-new 2015 Outback ($27,995.)Maybe its because I love wagons, or the fact that theres

an impressive 1,005 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats (2,075L with them folded), or that you can get it with a 6-speed manual, its a very well-balanced vehicle. Not to mention comfortable and quiet too. Both the Forester and Outback have a little something extra, too. The CVT equipped models feature X-Mode, a system that further helps you gain more traction in low traction envi-ronments, and comes with hill descent control.

All of these great cars come with 220 mm of ground clearance, meaning you can save your money on a snow shovel! Okay, thats not entirely true, but that ground clearance allows you to trek deeper off the beaten path if thats what youre into. Throughout the days activities, whether it was engaging the X-Mode system while stopped in the middle of a snowy incline, or allowing the hill descent control to work its magic descending that same snowy mound, one thing is certain: Subaru builds a

strong product. One might argue that theyre a little behind when it comes to styling and aesthetics. But not everyone needs the prettiest SUV on the market or one that is the most tech-savvy when it comes to infotainment. The pillars on which these cars are built are the fundamental blocks that allow their owners to put their faith in them and have a blast while doing it.Visit www.subaru.ca for more [email protected]
