At S&S Seeds, we feel our chief distinctions are service and fine quality seeds. We have research and development trial fields for evaluation of new and old species. Ourproduction fields and continued extensive collections of native plant seed allows us tooffer seeds for more than 900 plant species, including wildflowers, native and reclama-tion grasses, trees, shrubs, and native plants. Our large and diverse inventory enablesus to ship product the same day it is ordered.

By utilizing our state of the art seed conditioning equipment to process seed and bycontinually testing for purity, germination and pure live seed counts at certified laboratories, top quality seeds are assured.

Our professional staff is available to work with you to design seed mixes for eachparticular project site. Careful consideration is given to site condition, soil type,

climate, available moisture, and the desired visual effect. Germination, purity and seed count are also considered when recommending planting rates to guarantee a properly balanced seed mix.

We also specialize in custom seed collections for projects which require site specificspecies. If increases of seeds or plants are necessary to complete the project, S&S Seedshas production facilities available.

Specification:Hydropost shall be a compost product produced by the controlled biologicaldecomposition of organic matter that has been sanitized through the genera-tion of heat and stabilized to be beneficial to plant growth. Compost shall bederived from chipped, shredded or ground vegetation or clean processed woodproducts, and a Class A, exceptional quality biosolids compost, as required byUS EPA, 40 CRF, part 503c regulations. The compost shall be processed toreduce weed seeds, pathogens and deleterious material and shall not containpaint, petroleum products, herbicides, fungicides or other chemical residuesthat would be harmful to plant or animal life. Other deleterious material suchas glass, plastics, metal or rocks shall not exceed 0.1% by weight or volume,and shall be of such size as not to harm application equipment or hinder theapplication of these materials. A minimum of 135° internal temperature shallbe maintained for at least 15 consecutive days during the composting process.The compost shall be thoroughly turned a minimum of five times during thecomposting process, and shall go through a minimum 90 days curing periodafter the 15 day thermophilic compost process has been completed.

Hydropost shall be screened through a minimum 1/4 inch screen. The moisture content shall not exceed 35%.

1-Step Method:Apply seed, 500 lb. fiber, 1500 lb. Hydropost, water and tackifier as needed.

2-Step Method:Step 1: Apply Seed, 450 lb. Hydropost, 150 lb. fiber.Step 2: Apply 1050 lb. Hydropost, 350 lb. fiber, tackifier, fertilizer andwater as required.

A Naturally Perfect TackifierM-Binder is a botanical glue used as an aid in hydroseeding, to stabi-lize soils, and for dust control. M-Binder is unsurpassed as a tackifiersetting the stand for the industry since the early 1970’s. It is 100%organic, made from the plantago (Plantago insularis) plant. The mate-rial used to make the glue is the protective coating of the plantagoseed, known as a psyllium. This outer coating's purpose in nature isto stick the seed to the soil to improve germination. M-Binder is com-posed of the finely ground outer coating of this seed. It works per-fectly as a tackifier, doing exactly the job that nature intended.

Where to Use M-BinderM-Binder may be used anywhere you need to tack straw or mulch, orcontrol dust and erosion, such as for highway, mine and pipelinereclamation, for revegetation and restoration projects, fire rehabilita-tion, landscaping and beautification.

ApplicationM-Binder may be applied as a dry powder or as a wet slurry to dry orwet surfaces. It may even be applied during rain. It does not requireset-up or drying time because when it is wet it is a heavy muciloidmaterial and when dry it is a firm but rewettable membrane.

M-Binder may be used at varying rates depending on factors such asslope, porosity of the soil and wind conditions. We have found that agood general rate is 150 lbs/acre.

• To tack straw: Apply M-Binder at 150-200 lbs/acre. We also recommend mixing with wood fiber at a rate of 200-300 lbs/acre(to help keep tackifier on top of straw) and sufficient water toproduce good slurry flow.

• For use with mulch: Apply M-Binder at 100-200 lbs/acre andwood fiber or paper mulch as specified.

Straw WattleDefinition:Slope Interruption Devices (SID) are manufactured from straw that is wrapped in tubular black plastic netting. They are approximately 8 inches (200 mm) in diameter by 20-25 feet (7-8 m) long. Rolls areplaced and staked along the contour of newly constructed or disturbed slopes.

Purpose:Slope Interruption Devices (SID) are intended to capture and keep sediment on the slopes. Straw wattles (SIDs) are useful to temporarilystabilize slopes by reducing soil creep and sheet and rill erosion untilpermanent vegetation can get established. Installed, straw wattlesshorten the slope length, thereby interrupting the raveling and rillingprocesses, and reduce the slope steepness. They catch soil material thatmoves down the slope by the freeze/thaw processes. Organic matterand native seeds are trapped behind the wattles, which provide a stablemedium for germination, logs trap fertile topsoil and retain moisturefrom rainfall, which aids in growth of tree seedlings planted along theupslope side of the wattles.

Design Considerations:Sites appropriate for straw wattles are:• Slopes susceptible to sheet and rill erosion• Slopes producing dry ravel• Slopes susceptible to freeze/thaw activity; or slopes difficult to

vegetate because of soil movement. Straw logs are not intended for use in concentrated flow situations

Disadvantages:• Wattles only function for one or two seasons• If not installed properly with a sufficient trench, wattles may fail• Straw wattles may require maintenance to ensure that the stakes

are holding and the wattles are still in contact with the soil. This is especially true on steep slopes in sandy soil

Advantages:• Straw wattles are a relatively low-cost solution to sheet and rill

erosion problems• They can replace silt fences or straw bales on steep slopes• Rolls are a short-term solution to help establish native vegetation• Rolls store moisture for vegetation planted immediately upslope• Plastic netting will eventually photodegrade, eliminating the need

for retrieval of materials after the straw has broken down• Straw becomes incorporated into the soil with time, adding organic material to the soil and retaining moisture for vegetation.

Straw wattles will last an average of one to two years. This is an impor-tant factor when planning the optimum length of time the slope willneed mechanical stabilization.

Supplement To General Installation Guidelines/Slopes And ChannelsSubgrade / Slopes & Channels: On slopes and channels, the site must be shaped to the design specifications (Slope gradient, Density of soil& etc.) The site must be groomed to be free of soil clods, clumps, rocksor equipment imprints of any kind that would prevent the blanketfrom lying flush against the surface contour.

Seeding / Slopes & Channels: For non soil filled applications on slopesand channels, hydro-seed, board cast or drill seed over prepared soilbefore blanket is deployed. Make sure to hydro-mulch after seedingand before the blanket is installed to ensure the seed is in direct con-tact with the soil. Seed mixes with adequate pure live seed ratios mustbe used to ensure proper germination ratios and successful vegetationestablishment. Consult your local distributor or seed supplier to obtaina proper seed mix.

Anchor Trench & Check Slots / Slopes & Channels: Anchor trenchesare required to securely fasten the blanket to the subgrade surface. Anchortrenches and intermediate check slots are typically 6-9 inches wide and 6-9 inches deep. The blanket is installed in the trench and fastened to thebottom with staples spaced 1-3 ft. apart. The anchor trenches and checksslots are then back filled and compacted in such a manner not to damagethe blanket. (See Slope & Channel Isometric View)

Anchor Trench / Slopes: Anchor trenches should be installed at least1ft. beyond the crest of the slope. (See Longitudinal Anchor TrenchFig. 2) Anchor Trench / Channels: In a channel anchor trenches areinstalled at the beginning of the channel. Check Slots / Channels: In a channel, check slots are spaced approxi-mately 25 – 60 ft. intervals down stream depending on flow condi-tions, channel gradient and time to vegetate. (See Intermediate CheckSlot Fig. 3 & Cannel Isometric View) Field Joining And Anchoring: Theblanket is rolled down the slope or channel loosely to maintain contactwith the soil at all times. Side to side overlap between rolls are 3-4inches minimum and anchored on 2-3 ft. intervals minimum. End toend splice overlap between rolls are 1-3 ft. minimum and anchoredwith two rows of staples on 1 ft. intervals minimum.Overlaps are shingled in the direction of flow.

Staple patterns will vary depending on application, soil type, slope orchannel gradient and etc. (See Staple Pattern Guidelines) A rule of thumbfor estimating the amount of staples required for a project is as follows:

Steep Slopes / 1:1 and greater 2-4 staples per sq. yd.High Flow Channel 3-4 staples per sq. yd.Low Flow Channel 2-3 staples per sq. yd.

Install additional staples as required to ensure the blanket is always incontact with the soil, regardless of suggested staple patterns.

Anchoring Devices: Use a 6 inch x 1 inch 11 gauge minimum metal staple in heavy compacted soil. In loose soil conditions use a 8 inch x 1 inch 11 gauge minimum metal staple. Other approved anchoringdevices in loose soil conditions are as follows:• 12 inch x 1.5 inch metal staples.• 18 inch pins with 1.5 inch diameter washer.• 12-30 inch J-Shape pins made from bent 1/4 inch wire or rebar.

Install staples or pins so that the top of the anchor is flush with the soil surface.

Special Installation & Conditions: The installation guidelines are rec-ommendations only. You should always confirm the installation proce-dure with your local distributor or blanket manufacturer to ensuremaximum performance of the product. All design specifications pre-pared by a qualified design consultant or engineer supersede these rec-ommended guidelines.

Product selection software, which some manufactures claim to bedesign software, use versions of the universal soil loss equation, nation-al rainfall and soil survey charts to fabricate a formula that will make amathematical blanket type selection.

This approach to computerize product selection shouldnever be used to select a blanket type for a specific project applicationbecause it circumvents the base line data collection process that allproject specifiers regardless of scope are required to do if any hope ofsuccess is expected. This type of evaluation does not allow the speci-fiers to use site specific project data that is directly relevant to theapplication design and product performance.

Mycorrhizal fungi are naturally occurring organisms that form symbiotic relationships with nearly all plants including grasses,forbs, shrubs and trees. They function as a collection system for their host plants, accessing moisture and nutrients up to 50 timesmore efficiently than non-mycorrhizal plants.

More Efficient Use of Soil Nutrient ResourcesSeeds inoculated with AM 120 Mycorrhizal Inoculant establishstrong healthy roots systems much quicker than non inoculated seed.Mycorrhizal fungi develop complex webs known as "Hyphae"throughout the soil far beyond the reach of the plants roots. Theyrelease enzymes and chelating agents that convert immobile nutrientsinto available plant food. Greater capture of many nutrients andincreased leaf chlorophyll are some of the well documented effects of Mycorrhizae.

Burned Area Revegetation, Does it Need Mycorrhizal fungi?Wildfires have historically played a necessary function in manyecosystems; converting dry vegetation into available nutrients andallowing a healthy rebirth of plant species to occur.

With the intervention of highly effective fire suppression technology,many of these fire dependent sites have been protected for unnaturalperiods of time. This allows fire fuel to build and when fire occurs,temperatures from the fires are much higher, impacting a greateramount of damage to the flora and fauna.

Whether a "Mycorrhizal Inoculant" should be used can be generallydetermined by an assessment of the temperatures that occurred onthe site. If soil temperatures exceeded 1400F throughout the root-zone, both the seed bank and the mycorrhizal component will beaffected. If temperatures ran cooler during the burn, allowing plantsto re-sprout and seeds to germinate, the presence of adequate levels of mycorrhizae are likely to remain in the soil.

Drought ProtectionMycorrhizal Hyphae are five times smaller than the tiniest root hairs;allowing them to enter very tiny spaces within the soil. They also havea much larger surface area than non-inoculated roots, providing greatermoisture absorption from the same amount of soil.

Weed SuppressionAs well colonized ecosystems become self-sustaining, the more efficientuptake of plant nutrients and moisture by mycorrhizal plants canreduce the presence of less efficient non-mycorrhizal ruderals.

Improved Soil StructureGlomalin is a recently discovered glue like compound that is excreted bymycorrhizal fungi throughout the root zone. It binds soil particles andimproves aggregation, allowing much greater absorption ofprecipitation and reducing the potential effects of soil erosion.

ConclusionReseeding with AM 120 is a sound management decision to increasenative vegetation cover and help protect natural ecosystems.
