HANG AROUND VICTOR 3 FOR THE POTATO FESTIVAL
Why a POTATO FESTIVAL?people have been asking me...
Potatoes are the second most consumed food in America,
second only to milk products. The average American eats
120 pounds of potatoes a year. Thats almost 365
per person, or one a day.
Hang Around Victor Day has always been about showcasing everything thats great about Victor. For our Hang Around celebration this year the chamber harkens back to our roots (pun intended). Babette Huber, Victor Historian, has provided some historical background on the history of Victor as an agricultural community. One of our early specialties was the seed potato.
In the late 1800s farming was a necessity as early settlers needed to be self-sufficient and they accomplished this by farming our fertile land. The product that brought Victor, and especially Fishers, worldwide fame was the potato specifically the seed potato.
Charles Ford, a local potato pioneer, was sent to a farmers alliance convention in Morristown, NJ in 1877. While farmers there were having difficulty keeping potato seed held over until the next planting season, Ford described the hardy potatoes he was growing in Fishers. He promised to send them some of his seed potatoes and continued to do so for the next 50 years. Fords potatoes won gold medals and his catalog advertised
more than 94 varieties of seed potatoes.
At about the same time (1875) Charles Fords company was operating in the Victor area, John Connelly started his seed potato company. After his untimely death his wife Sarah decided to carry on the business. Sarah Connelly grew over 75 varieties of seed potatoes. She named different varieties of their potatoes, such as Andrus Rose, Kaiser and Maggie Murphy. Charles Fords business was closed in the late 1920s about the same time the custom of two weeks of potato digging school vacation was abandoned.
Interestingly, the rich, sandy soil where Eastview Mall now sits was at one time where seed potatoes were grown and harvested.
So while you are visiting Hang Around Victor Day: The Potato Festival, look for potato-based dishes served by our food trucks. Make sure the kids participate in our potato coloring contest by dressing-up our mascots Victor and Victoria. Visit our non-profit agencies and shop for all occasions with our craft vendors. Listen to music by Flint Creek and enjoy everything thats great about Victor!

The Yukon Gold potato honors the
Alaskan Klondike Gold Rush of
1897-1898. Potatoes were practically worth their
weight in gold and valued for their
vitamin C content that miners traded gold for potatoes.
