FROM THE AdministratorsThe 2016-17/2017-18 Annual Report allows us to share all the wonderful accomplishments over the past two years. Our improvements to learning, service, activities and facilities never stop. As you will read in these pages you will find the advancements we have made in 1 to 1 digital learning and much needed facelifts in our facilities. Most recently, we have announced the promotion of two of our colleagues, Karla McHan to St Aloysius Principal, for the school year beginning 2019/2020 and Lori Tzotzolas as the Director of the new VCS Early Learning Center, opening fall 2019.

We continue to focus our efforts on technology improvements, which are truly an ongoing endeavor. We have continued to expand our digital learning environment with an emphasis of creating new opportunities for our students and teachers. Specifically, we have introduced 3D design and 3D printing into our classrooms and implemented a new course, Exploring Computer Science, which will teach the fundamental concept of computing and the basics of programming/coding.

Additionally, we have updated bathrooms in the lower elementary classrooms and at St. Aloysius. The development office has been changed into a Pre-K 3yr old classroom and the floors in the St. Francis Office have been updated. The St. Aloysius lobby will be altered to celebrate those students who have distinguished

themselves academically – National Merit Scholars, and students who have scored 30 + on the ACT.

Our students service hours and scholarships awards continue to increase from year to year. We are so proud of each and every one of our students.

Our educators continue the rich tradition of educating our students mind, body and spirit just as the Sisters of Mercy and the Brothers of Scared Heart did before

them. The lives of our students and faculty are impacted daily from the gifts we receive from you, our incredible community of supporters.

Your continued commitment to Vicksburg Catholic School through your prayers and generous support continues to strengthen our mission of providing Catholic education, which offers our students an opportunity to strive for academic excellence in a faith-based learning environment.

At Saint Aloysius, I learned several things that will follow me throughout my life. I learned so many lessons there, both academic and about life. I learned to love, worship a mighty God, challenge injustice wherever it presented itself, lead, serve, and I even managed to gain some academic knowledge along the way. All of these things that I learned were learned not

only from the teachers in the classrooms, but they were instilled in me by the peers that surrounded me. Every one of them sought to reach undiscovered greatness in themselves. They pushed me to be great, and I pushed back.

While we pushed each other to excel in whatever areas we chose, a special bond formed. During my six years at Saint Aloysius, we had a lot of fun and success, but the thing I love most about our school was the support in our hard times and failures. We are a family, and we look after one another. I know it sounds a bit cliché to say that, but the family that forms at this place is truly amazing. I credit that family with every single bit of success that I have achieved and the resilience they instilled in me during my failures. The faculty and students are there for each other, no matter what.

I firmly believe that Saint Aloysius High School changes lives. It definitely changed mine. As I left to go to college, I knew I was prepared, not only for the challenges ahead in the classroom but for the challenges ahead in my faith and the successes and failures I would come to meet. I will forever cherish my time spent at Saint Aloysius, where greatness is overflowing and expected. My Saint Aloysius family means the world to me, and I know that I will never find a substitute for its place in my heart.

Hello! It has been such an exciting first year as the Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. For those of you I have not had the opportunity to meet, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kristi Smith and I accepted the role of Director of Development and Alumni Affairs with great enthusiasm last June. I have a Master of Business

Administration Degree from Delta State University and twenty plus years of experience in sales and marketing. I am married to Vicksburg native, Patrick Smith, and we have three wonderful children, Jack (8), Vaylor (7), and Hart (4), all three are enrolled in Vicksburg Catholic School.

In the experience I have had in fundraising, sales, and marketing, I have not encountered a place as unique and special as VCS. One of the things that makes this school so special is you, our parents, friends, and alumni. From planning Spooky Sprint, to selling tickets for our 34th annual Drawdown, to raising nearly $500K in a few short months to fund the building of our Early Learning Center, you all are at the heart of it all. I want to thank you for sharing your time and for your ongoing commitment to the legacy established by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and The Sisters of Mercy so many years ago. I hope you enjoy and are enlightened by what we have to share in the 2017-2018 Annual Report and I look forward to accomplishing much more together!

wo years ago, Vicksburg Catholic School

embarked on a journey to create a Digital

Learning Environment for students and faculty.

Today, students in grades PreK-6 have access

to Apple iPad devices and every student in grades

7-12 has a MacBook. We have been extremely busy

– connecting teachers to tools and making sure our

students are better prepared for college.

Through extensive hands-on training and professional

development sessions with Apple Professional

Learning specialists, our elementary, middle, and

high school instructors have discovered learning

resources and have developed new skills to transform

our classrooms into a digital learning environment,

creating new opportunities for students.

For the first time in November 2017, several of our

high school students participated in the C Spire C3

Coding Challenge, a regional coding competition

which featured 30 teams of high school students from

12 different Mississippi counties. During the event,

students experienced a series of challenges using

coding languages such as Python and JavaScript,

while working one-on-one with a C Spire software

developer. By participating in this coding competition,

our students gained exposure to computer science

and the realization that there are job opportunities in

the field.

Another new opportunity allowed our high school

Web Design students to partner with students in

second grade for “pair programming,” in which two

programmers work together at one workstation.

The students used code.org to create their own

Flappy Bird games as part of the Hour of Code 2017,

a global event organized to introduce students to

computer science. Exploring Computer Science, a

course designed to teach the fundamental concepts

of computing, including the basics of programming/

coding, is a new high school elective for the 2018-

2019 school year.

We have also introduced 3D design and 3D printing

into our classrooms. Middle school students

experimented with Tinkercad, a browser-based 3D

design platform, and have watched our Makerbot 3D

printer in action. We plan to continue to incorporate

3D printing into our classroom instruction with help

from local resources such as the U.S. Army Engineer

Research and Development Center in Vicksburg.

More and more students are creating effective presentations,

slide decks, and compelling video using Keynote, GarageBand,

and iMovie, applications developed as a part of Apple Inc.’s

iWork productivity suite, and using Microsoft Office 365,

which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and other

classroom tools.

We are proud of our history of educating children in an

academically rigorous environment for over 157 years, and

we thank you for your continued participation and support

in helping us create a superior digital learning environment

for our students. Your commitment and involvement in our

school will ensure Vicksburg Catholic School continues to

provide exceptional education in the 21st century.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Continuing the LegacyIn the fall of 2017, Vicksburg Catholic School

embarked on an exciting new journey; to build

The Vicksburg Catholic School Early Learning

Center. The feasibility of implementing education

for children as young as 6 weeks of age has been

researched and discussed for nearly twenty years.

The motivation to implement early childcare became

a reality after learning of Vicksburg’s growing needs.

Already confident that Vicksburg’s childcare needs were

gentrified and becoming lower standard than those in

surrounding communities, The U.S. Army Engineering

Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Entergy

announced plans to hire 800 and 300 new employees,

respectively. Additionally, ERDC employees reported one

of the key reasons its employees were leaving Vicksburg

to live in neighboring communities was due to lack of quality childcare. Consequently, Vicksburg Catholic School decided

to answer the call to provide quality childcare facilities. We are expanding educational opportunities so that we can attract

and retain working families, for the vitality of our school and our community.

At VCS we are excited about the opportunity to expand our reach but cannot realize our goal without your help. Since the

launch of Capital Campaign, Continuing The Legacy, thanks to the philanthropic support donors, investors, and especially

our alumni, we have raised nearly $500,000 towards our goal of $1.2 million. Plans have been finalized and approved by

the Diocese of Jackson and we will break ground late summer 2018, in the hope of enrolling children 6 weeks – 3 years in

fall 2019. We continue in our efforts to raise funds and ask you to prayerfully consider a five year commitment in support

of Vicksburg Catholic School. You determine what your level of participation will be. No matter the amount the gift, it is

important and appreciated. Please see attached brochure.

Vicksburg Catholic SchoolANNOUNCES NEW ADMINISTRATION

ori Tzotzolas, also a native of Vicksburg,

graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in

Education degree from Mississippi State

University and a Master of Education in

Administration and Supervision, with an

endorsement in Catholic School Leadership, from

Marymount University. Lori was a classroom teacher

for seven years with the Vicksburg Warren School

District and has spent the last seventeen years as a

classroom and lead teacher with Vicksburg Catholic

School, at St Francis Xavier. Beginning Fall 2018, Lori

will work closely with the VCS Development Office

in effort to continue to raise funds for the Early

Learning Center. She will also work with Catholic

Diocese, the project architect, and the Department

of Health to ensure the VCS Early Learning Center

meets operational criteria for projected opening in fall

2019. Lori is married to Lester Tzotzolas of Vicksburg.

They have two children, VCS Alumni, George, 20,

and Alexandra, 18. They attend St George Orthodox

Church of Vicksburg.

arla is a Vicksburg native. She graduated with

in Educational Leadership degree from William

Carey. She has been a classroom teacher and lead

teacher for 22 years for the Vicksburg Warren School

District and at St Aloysius for 2 years. Beginning fall

2018, Karla will serve as Assistant Principal to Dr.

Virgil Strickland, current principal of St Aloysius. She

will step into the role of principal for school year, 2019

– 2020. Karla is married to David Mchan, also from

Vicksburg. They have 3 children, Connor, 26, Brian, 20,

and Ella, 17. They attend St Michaels Catholic Church

of Vicksburg.
