Livelihoods of local people such as agri-culture, fisheries, salt industry, etc that arethe mainstay of the region are now in fullswing.

In Ayeyawady Division, the governmentbuilt life-saving hillocks, cyclone shelters andten road networks that can be used as shelterin the event of natural disasters in future. Theconstruction of ten road networks has con-tributed much to better transport in the re-gion.

The living standard of local people hasimproved with the construction of new homesfor storm victims and reconstruction of edu-cational, health and religious buildings. Suchgreat achievements gained in a short periodcan be attributed to benevolence, goodwilland farsighted guidance of the Head of Stateand concerted efforts of the State, the peopleand the Tatmadaw.

STOCKHOLM, 6 Nov—After years of procrastination,Sweden and Finland agreed on Thursday to allow theRussian-led Nord Stream pipeline to pass through theirwaters in the Baltic Sea, a crucial step for the projectdestined to supply Europe with Russian gas.

The breakthrough approvals come as new tensionshave been playing out between Moscow and Ukraine, raising fears for a new row between the countries thatcould jeopardize Russian gas supplies to Europe.

By going under the Baltic Sea, Nord Stream’s pipelinecould free the European Union of the risks posed by dis-putes between Moscow and the Ukraine, through which80 percent of Russian gas currently transits on its way toEurope. One quarter of all gas consumed in Europe comesfrom Russia. “The government authorises Nord Stream tobuild a pipeline in international waters inside the Swedisheconomic zone,” Swedish environment minister AndreasCarlgren told reporters in Stockholm.

A few hours later, the Finnish government issued astatement saying it “granted consent for Nord StreamAG’s plan to construct an offshore natural gas pipelinesystem that would traverse the Baltic Sea.”—Internet

Plants rated topindoor air‘cleaners’

ATHENS, 6 Nov—US scientists say theyhave come up with five ornamental plantsthat do a superior job of removing indoor airpollutants.

The study of 28 types of plants, publishedin HortScience, found Hemigraphis alternata, known as purple waffle plant; Hederahelix or English ivy; Hoya carnosa or vari-egated wax plant; and Asparagus densiflorusor Asparagus fern had the highest removalrates for all five volatile organic compoundsintroduced.

Tradescantia pallida or Purple heart plantwas rated superior for its ability to removefour of the volatile organic compounds.

Study leader Stanley J Kays of the Univer-sity of Georgia in Athens placed plants ingas-tight glass jars, exposing them to ben-zene, octane, toluene and alpha-pinene.

The researchers analyzed air samples andthen classified plants as superior, intermedi-ate and poor in their ability to removethe five volatile organic compounds fromthe air.

“The volatile organic compounds testedin this study can adversely affect indoorair quality and have a potential to seriouslycompromise the health of exposed individu-als,” Kays said in a statement.

VANCOUVER, 6 Nov— The Vancouver2010 Winter Olympic Games, about 100days to go, have already generated aboutone billion Canadian dollars (936 millionUS dollars) for the economy, accordingto an independent report released onThursday. The report, prepared byPriceWaterhouse Coopers, one of theworld’s largest professional servicesfirms, examined the economic effects theGames brought to the province of Brit-ish Columbia and elsewhere of Canadafrom 2003, when the city of Vancouerwon the bid, to 2008.

It estimated that preparations for theGames generated between 684 million

and 884 million Canadian dollars (640million and 827 million US dollars) inGDP for BC as well as an additional170million Canadian dollars (159 millionUS dollars) in other provinces across thecountry. It found that during the period ofsix years, the Games helped to create morethan 20,000 jobs in BC and about 800 newbusinesses. But in looking at the benefitsof the Games, the report does not con-sider the estimated 1.6 billion Canadiandollars (1.5 billion US dollars) spent onvenue construction and other Games-re-lated costs over the same time, makingit difficult to determine the true overallsituation. —Xinhua

Hybrid molecules maytreat Alzheimer’s

Estrogen has protective‘brain effect’

AUGUSTA, 6 Nov — US researchers and Chineseresearchers say rat studies show losing estrogen canlead to diminished brain function.

The study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found areas of the brain — such as CA3 — that tendto be stroke resistant and important in learning andmemory, became vulnerable to stroke in rats that wentwithout estrogen for long periods. It appears estrogenhelps suppress free radical production that can becomedeadly to cells at higher levels.

“Estrogen must be doing something that is very criti-cal for the protection of CA3 and we think it’s sup-pressing NADPH oxidase production,” Dr Darrell WBrann, chief of Medical College of Georgia who wasthe study’s corresponding author, said in a statement.

NADPH oxidase is the enzyme that makes the freeradical superoxide, the researchers said.

“If this is also true in humans, just using surgicalmenopause as an example, most women would be fineunless they came upon a severe stress,” Brann said.

Abnormal sleep may increase nurse errors

ANN ARBOR, 6 Nov —University of Michiganscientists say they havedeveloped new molecu-lar tools that hold prom-ise in Alzheimer’s dis-ease treatment.

The researchers, ledby Professor Mi HeeLim, said one of themysteries of Alzheimer’sdisease is how protein-like snippets called amy-loid-beta peptides canclump together, causingcell death, that leads tothe disease’s memoryloss and other mentaldifficulties.

Although the exact

mechanism for amyloid-beta clump formationisn’t known, scientistsdo know that copper andzinc ions are somehowinvolved.

Lim and coworkerssaid they used a newstrategy to develop “bi-functional” small mol-ecules that not only grabmetal ions, but also in-teract with amyloid-beta.

“The idea is simple,”said Lim.

“We found moleculesknown for amyloid-betarecognition and then at-tached metal bindingsites to them.”

The scientists showedthe bi-functional mol-ecules were able to regu-late copper-inducedamyloid-beta aggrega-tion, not only disruptingthe formation of clumps, but also breaking upclumps that already hadformed.
