1. Sun Grant Awarded
JulieOnnembo,DaveShawandJohnSmithwereawardeda2012i2aSunGrantintheamountof$4,750fortheirproposalentitled“On-LineStudentStafftrainingModule”and“DaretoPlayFairIntramuralSportsmanshipModule.” ThisjointprojectbetweenthedepartmentsofStudentActivitiesandIntramuralSportswillprovideforthedevelopmentofonlinetrainingforstudentstaffofbothdepartments.Inaddition,IntramuralSportswouldusetheonlinetrainingtopromotecriticalthinkingtoparticipantsthroughonlinesportsmanshiptraining.Bothdepartmentsplantomaketheonlinecomponentrequiredfortheirspecificgroups.StudentstaffwouldberequiredtocompletethemodulebeforetheybeginworkforStudentActivitiesandIntramuralChairsandpriortoregisteringtheirorganizationsintointramuralprograms.Bothmoduleswouldbe structuredtoemphasizecritical
thinkingtraitsandstandards.StudentStafftrainingwouldfocusonstandardsofclarity,accuracyandprecisionaswellastraitsofintellectualautonomy,integrityandconfidenceinreason.TheIntramuralproject,DaretoPlayFairprogram,wouldbefocusedontraitsoffair-mindedness,intellectual
humility,courage,empathy,autonomyandintegrity.Oncecompleted,themoduleswillbeavailableforall
departments,Universitywide,whoemploystudentstaff.OtherpersonnelwhowillbeassistingwiththisprojectincludePamCurtisandBeckyClarkfromStudentAffairs,andKatiePartinfromFirstYearInitiatives.

2. Collaboration Aids in RA Spring Training
TheOfficeofHousingandResidenceLifewelcomeditsnewandreturningResidentAssistants(RAs)backtocampusearlythisJanuarywithaSpringTrainingsession.PhyllisClark,oftheCulturalCenter,kickedofftheeventwithaninspiringspeechaboutfollowingthroughandlivinguptoleadershippotential.Thetwo-dayeventcontinuedwithsessionspresentedbynumerouscampuspartnersincluding:“SafeZoneTraining”withtheLGBTOffice,“RésuméBuilding”withtheCareerDevelopment
Center,“PartneringforProgramming”withtheStudentActivitiesBoardand“StressResiliency”withHealthPromotions.Additionally,JanUlrich,arepresentativefromtheKentuckySuicidePreventionCenter,presentedasessioncalled“Question,PersuadeandRefer”aboutpreventingsuicidewithon-campusresidents.MembersoftheOfficeofResidenceLifeandHousingalsocameouttopresentsessionsand
showsupport.TheyincludedAdamRobertson,PatrickChenault,JessicaWatts,TomConverso,CharlieEdmiston,

Great Turnout for Veteran Symposium Morethan165folksfromacrossthenationattendedthe4thAnnualVeteranSymposiumforHigherEducationheldinLouisvilleFebruary20ththrough22nd.Participantscamefrom27differentstatesandrepresented107differentinstitutions.PresentationsfocusedonVeteranSuccessandTransitionIssues,PreventingVeteranSuicide,AssessingVeteranStudentServicesPrograms,andCommunicationandRetentionStrategiesforVeterans.TheSymposiumwassponsoredbytheUofLDivisionofStudentAffairswiththesupportofACPA,NASPAandServicemembersOpportunityCollege.Gotohttp://stuaff.org/veterans/vetsymposiumpresentations2012.htmltoreviewthesymposiumpresentations.

5. Fryberger Greek Sing Celebrates 75th Anniversary
TheUniversityofLouisvillecelebratedits75thanniversaryoftheFrybergerGreekSingwithaspecialtwo-nightengagementatThe
PalaceTheaterindowntownLouisville.Thisyear’sFrybergerGreekSingwasheldonSaturday,Feb.25,andSunday,Feb.26. TheFrybergerGreekSingisasonganddancecompetitionbetweenUofLfraternitiesand
sororities.Thegroupsspendmonthspreparingmusicandchoreographytoperformonstage.Thiseventisnamedafter
AgnesMooreFryberger,aUofLmusicprofessorinthe1930s.Actually,itbeganasatributetoherafter
sheleftherpositionduetoillness.ItoriginallytookplaceonthestepsofGrawemeyerHallonUofL’sBelknapCampus!ItalsohasbeenstagedatUofL’sRedBarnandtheSwainStudentActivitiesCenter,MemorialAuditoriumandThePalaceTheater. Proceedsfromthisyear’seventhelpfundtheUofLCommunityMusicProgramandacademicscholarshipsforfraternityandsororitymembers. WithFrybergercelebratingits75thyearatUofL,thecompetitionwassplitintoatwonightformat,allowingSaturdaytobedesignateda“GreekFrybergerAlumniNight.”Inordertowelcomebackalumni,StudentAffairshostedanalumni
receptionpriortothealumniperformance.Thisreceptionconnectedalumniguestsrangingfrom1955to2011andwasanexcellentchancetominglewithUofLadministrators,parents,andformerFrybergerparticipants.Nostalgiawasdefinitelyintheairwithphotosofperformancesfromdecadespastandstoriesofalumniexperiences.
6. Faculty Friends Program OnFebruary15,StudentAffairsProfessionalDevelopmentCommitteeheldthesecondofferingoftheFacultyFriendsprogramseriesfeaturingDr.StuartEsrock,AssociateProfessorintheCommunicationDepartment. Dr.EsrockwasaskedtorespondtoaseriesofquestionsforustolearnmoreaboutwhathedoeshereatUofLandhowthatconnectstoourworkinStudentAffairs.HerespondedwithaseriesofrecommendationstohelpStudentAffairsgetthefaculty’sattentiondespitethemanydifferentrequirements,whichincludesteaching,researchandservicedemandingtheirtime.

TheUniversityofLouisvilleDivisionofStudentAffairswasrecentlychosentohostthe2012NASPAStudentAffairsDevelopment
Conference!GlennGittings,workingwithFrankMianzo,PamHoeppnerfromtheBrownHotel,andCaseyKruerAllenwiththeLouisville
ConventionandVisitorsBureau,submittedasuccessfulconferencebidpackage
thatsituatestheentireNASPAStudentAffairsDevelopmentConferenceindowntownLouisvilleattheBrown.
ThepurposeoftheNASPAStudentAffairsDevelopmentConferenceistoshareandexchangestrategies,ideas,andresources,andtodiscussissuesrelatedtofundraisingforstudentaffairs.Theconferencepromotesanexchangeofthebestpracticesandassistsattendeesinidentifyingsuccessfulprograms.Itisdesignedforcurrentprofessionalswhohavedevelopmentresponsibilities,specificallyforstudentaffairs,andprofessionalswithexperienceineitherstudentaffairsordevelopment.Theconferenceplanstooffereducationalsessionsgearedtowardsindividualswhoarebothnewandseasonedwithinstudentaffairsdevelopment.WelookforwardtohostingthisstellarNASPAprofessionaldevelopmenteventinJuly.TheconferencewillbeheldJuly22-24.Tolearnmorevisit:http://www.naspa.org/programs/development/default.cfm

StudentAffairshasrecentlylaunchedtheGreekLeadershipFundsInitiative.TheOfficeofGreekLifeservesasacatalystto

encouragefraternityandsororityorganizationstoprovideexperiencesthatpromotegrowth,development,friendship,andeducationoftheirmembers.Greekinvolvementprovidesstudentswithopportunitiesinfindingtheirpotentialasleaders.

10. Dr. Cue Performs on Campus
TomRossman,aka“Dr.Cue”,isaworldchampion“artisticpool”ortrickshotbilliardartist.HehasappearedonESPNnumeroustimesandisaregularmemberoftheUnitedStatesteam,whichrivalsothernationsinworld-widebilliardcompetitions.ThedepartmentsofIntramuralandRecreational
SportsandStudentActivities,specificallytheStudentActivitiesBoard,collaboratedtobringDr.CuetocampusfortwoshowsonJanuary17.Dr.CueperformedintheCardinalCornerGameRoomatnoonandagainat6PM.Over250studentsattendedthetwoshowscombined,whichfeaturedmanyofthesameshotsheperformsincompetition.EveryoneenjoyedtheshotsandcomedyofDr.Cue,whoincorporatesalotofslapstickhumorintohisshows.Betweentheseshows,Dr.Cuegavefreeindividuallessonstoanystudentwhocameintotheroomwhilealsorunningatournament.ItwasagreatdayintheCardinalCornerGameRoom.Checkoutsomeofhistrickshotsathttp://www.youtube.com/user/ULIntramurals/videos.11. OneofthemostexcitingnewprogramsinStudentAffairs,theCardinalLeadershipCertificate,isinitssecondsemesterandhasalreadytripledinparticipantsize.Theprogramnowhosts29diversestudentsfrom23differentstudentorganizationsacrosscampus.Theprogramseekstodevelop“EmergingStudentLeaders”toworkmoreeffectivelywiththeirfellowstudents,facultyanduniversityadministration.Participantsarebuildingtheircriticalthinkingskillswhileinvestigatingconceptslikemulticulturalcompetence,programdevelopment,leadershipstylesanddevelopmentalplanningofstudentorganizations.AftertheygraduateinApril,thesecapablestudentleaderswillhavedevelopedvaluableskillsthatwillhelpthemcontributetothecampusandtheircommunity.
12. Return of the “Divine Nine”
Thisspring,UofLwillhostaneventthatwillcelebratehavingtheninememberorganizationsoftheNationalPan-HellenicCouncil(NPHC)theUniversitynowhasoncampus,otherwisereferredtoasthe“DivineNine.”Previously,UofLonlyhadsevenmembersofthe

NPHC,butnowistheonlyuniversityinKentuckywithallninemembers.Aspecialreceptionwillbeheldoncampus,Saturday,April20,2012at1:00p.m.followedbyacookoutat3:00p.m.PleasejoinusaswewelcomebackPhiBetaSigmaFraternity,Inc.andAlphaPhiAlpha
Fraternity,Inc.andcelebratebeingtheonlyuniversityinKentuckywithallofthe“DivineNine”members.
13. Welcome Zeta Tau Alpha UofLwelcomesthenewestpanhellenicsorority—ZetaTauAlpha.Thisphotowastakenatthechapter’scelebratoryluncheonattheDowntownMarriottwhentheywerereactivatedastheBetaLambda
chapterofZetaTauAlpha.ThechapterhadpreviouslyexistedatUofLfrom1927-1977.Thechaptercurrentlyhas94
membersandrecentlyearnedachaptersemesterGPAofa3.120andacumulativeGPA
ofa3.304.Frequently,youseethewomenofZTAoncampusdistributingpinkribbonstosupporttheirnationalphilanthropyofbreastcancerawarenessandeducation.ZTAisagreatadditiontotheUofLcampus!
14. TRiO Valentine’s for Kosair
Expressingone’sloveforanotherisacelebratedcustomonValentine’sDay;sweetheartsandfamilymemberspresentgiftstooneanother,suchascards,candy,flowersandothersymbols
ofaffection.InordertogetintothespiritofValentine’sDay,TRiOStudentSupportServices(SSS)studentsandstaff,alongwithotherUofLcolleagues,engagedinacardmakingserviceprojectforKosairChildren’sHospital.Forthisproject,thegroupdesignedanddecoratedValentine’sDaycardstogivetochildrenandtheirfamiliesatKosair.Overafour-dayspan,171Valentine’sDaycardswereproduced,alongwithcandy,anddeliveredtoanxiouslyawaitingchildren!SSSwouldliketothankallofthosewhochippedinforthisendeavor!
15. New Online Giving Form Developed for Student Affairs
WorkingcollaborativelywiththeDivisionofAdvancement,StudentAffairshaslaunchedanewonlinegivingformforpotentialdonors.ThisnewonlinepageallowsStudentAffairstoalignwithAdvancementgivingproceduresandtheChartingOurCoursecapitalcampaign.Thenewformallowsdonorstoselectspecificfundstheywishtodesignateastheirgift,schedulegiftpayments,utilizeemployermatchingprogramstopossiblydoubletheirgift,andevenmakeagiftinhonorofsomeone.Toviewthenewformvisit:https://secure.imodules.com/s/1157/charting/index.aspx?sid=1157&gid=1&pgid=1003&cid=1865

AnotherthankstotheassistanceofformerSGApresidentToddSchmeideler(‘97),
StudentAffairsreceivedarecent$2,500giftfromMeijerinsupportofanSGAinitiativecalledCardinalConnectors.
17. Student Leaders at 2012 KRACLE Conference
DuringtheweekendofFebruary3-5,theUniversityofLouisvilleHousingandResidenceLifeDepartmentsentastrongdelegationofstudentleaders,consistingofResidentAssistantsandtheResidentStudentAssociation,totheannualKentuckyResidents’AffiliatesConferenceforLeadershipinEducationonthecampusofEasternKentuckyUniversity.Manyofourstudentstookadvantageoftheopportunitytoattendandpresentprogrammingtrackstotheconferenceattendees.Ourstudentleaderslearnednewideasandprogramsand
havecomebackexcitedtosharethemwiththeUniversity.TheUniversityofLouisvillealsoreceivedseveralawardsincludingover20BestofBluegrass,whichrecognizestheoutstandingworkdonemonthlyintheresidencehallsbytheirrespectivestaff.

19. 2012 International Fashion Show
Morethan850students,familymembers,andotherUniversitysupporterscameoutonJanuary27thtocelebratethe10thanniversaryofSAB’sInternationalFashionShow.Studentswerestyledincolorfulculturalapparelandthelatestmodernfinery,providedbysomeofourbestlocalfashionshops.Ourinternationalstudentassociations—theAfricanStudentUnion,IndianStudentAssociation,VietnameseStudentAssociation,andtheSriLankaStudentAssociation—providedlivelyentertainment.StudentleadersandvolunteersfromacrossthecampusjoinedtheSABonthestageandbehindthescenestobringthisfestiveeventtoanenthusiasticaudience. Themostpoignantmomentoftheshow,however,cameearlyintheeventasspecialguest
hostandformerSABdiversitychair,CoryYoung,joinedDr.MichaelAnthonyonstagetosharetheoriginsoftheeventthathehadinitiatedtenyearsbefore.IntheaftermathoftheSeptember11attacksin2001,studentsandvisitorsfromforeigncountrieswerebeingharassedandterrorizedacrosstheUnitedStates.CorydecidedthatweshouldletstudentsattheUniversityofLouisvilleknowthattheywerewelcomeandappreciated,
whichgaverisetothiswonderfuleventwhichhas—fortenyearsnow—broughtourUniversitytogetherforatrulyglobalcelebration. Thisyear’sInternationalFashionShowwasco-sponsoredbytheOfficeoftheViceProvostforDiversityandInternationalAffairs,theCulturalCenter,theWomen’sCenter,andtheRedBarnAlumniAssociation.Additionally,theSABreceivedgenerous
discountsfromRamsi’sCatering,andFleurdiLisEvents.
20. Intramurals Draws Record Participation
ThespringsemesterisofftoagreatstartfortheDepartmentofIntramuralandRecreationalSports!Thestructuredleagueandtournamentphaseoftheprogramcontinuestoseerecordnumbersofparticipation,evenwhenthenationaltrendisatadeclineinstructuredactivitiesinfavorofmoreinformalrecreation.It’sgreattoseeinterestinthestructuredpartoftheprogramcontinuingtoincrease.Therearemanymemoriesmadewhenpeoplearepartofateamorgroupandthestructuredphaseoftheprogramisprovidingthosetorecordnumbersofstudents!

21. Three Student Activities GAs Graduating
StudentActivitieswillhavethegreathonorofgraduatingthreeGraduateAssistantsthisspring:HollyBradford,LystonSkerritt,andJoshuaHardman.AllthreearefinishingtheirMaster’sinCollegeStudent
Personnelandarereadytopursuefull-timepositionsworkingwithcollegestudents.Holly,GraduateAssistantforGreekLife,hasenjoyedhavingameaningfulimpactonlivesofstudentsandisinterestedinworkingwithmanyareasofStudentAffairs,includingacademicadvisingandGreeklife.Lyston,
GraduateAssistantforInvolvement,appreciatestheamazingmentorshiphe’sexperiencedwhile
workinginStudentAffairsandisinterestedinafutureworkingwithstudentinvolvementanddiversityprograms.Josh,GraduateAssistantforRSOs,isgratefulforthewonderfullearningexperiencesofStudentAffairsandwouldlovetofindapositionworkingwithstudentprogrammingand/orstudentorganizations.WeappreciatetheirhardworkasGAsandwishthemwellastheybegintheircareers.

Bryan ShelangoskiisthenewAssociateDirectorforFacilities(ADF)andOperationsforHousingandResidenceLifeandservesontheCampusHousingLeadershipTeam.HeisdirectlyresponsibleformanagementofallfacilityissuesoftheUniversityownedresidentialbuildings,thepartnershipwiththefoundationfacilitieslocatedoncampus,andtheconnectionbetweenUniversityhousingandtheaffiliationcommunitieslocatedoffcampus.BryanpreviouslyservedastheAssociateDeanofStudentsatSullivanUniversityinLouisville,wherehedirectlysupervised

Shannon Gets Two More Years ShannonStatenhasbeenre-electedtoserveanother2yearsontheExecutiveBoardforACUHO-I(AssociationofCollegeandUniversityHousingOfficersInternational).Althoughtherewerethreeotherveryqualifiedcandidatesontheslatewithheranditisunusualtohavesomeonere-electedtothesameposition,ithappened.“Iamexcitedtoserveanother2yearsatthenational/internationallevel.”Shannonsaid.

Rareisn’ttherightword,neverismorelikeit!Aweekortwoago,DaleRamsay,thedirectorofIntramuralSports,waspickedtoworkthechampionshipgameoftheBoysLouisvilleInvitationalTournament(LIT)basketballtournament.DalealsoworkedthechampionshipgameoftheGirlsLITtournamentaswell!Thisisthefirsttimesomeonehasworkedbothchampionshipgamesinthelongandstoriedhistoryofthetournaments.Onboththeboysandgirlssides,theLITisoneofthemoreprestigioushighschoolbasketballtournamentsinthestate.KudostoDaleforachievingthisfeat.Thingslikethisaddtothedepartment’scredibility,andhelptopromotetheirimagetothecommunity.InadditiontoDale,JustinPeterson,OliverRayandAndrewAnsertareworkingintheKBOA(KentuckianaBasketballOfficialsAssociation).
