This forum provides participants an opportunity to learn, consider, and discuss current global issues about environment, resource, economy, society, technology, and so on. In addition, this forum strongly relates to International Exercise B (see IV. 5.2), and the students in the 3rd to 5th years of the Green Asia Program (corresponding to the doctoral course students) therefore must make a poster presentation about their research progress as well as participate in events to receive the credits for International Exercise B. Particularly, the 4th-year students have to design, plan, prepare, and conduct this forum as a task for International Exercise B2. (1) International Forum for Green Asia 2016 International Forum for Green Asia 2016 was held at the Chikushi campus on December 1, 2016. In the morning, after the opening address by Prof. Jun Tanimoto (Coordinator of the Green Asia Program), three invited speakers provided lectures (Photo 6-1). Dr. Masaya Hanada (Naka Fusion Institute, National Institute for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology) explained a basic concept for fusion energy and introduced its recent research and development. Dr. Suseno Kramadibrata (PT Bumi Resources Minerals, Indonesia) talked on the current situation of mining developments in Indonesia, and a role of rock mechanics. Dr. Kenji Kato (Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Co., Ltd.) gave a lecture about a leading edge of coal utilization technologies such as cokemaking and coal gasification processes. In the afternoon, the Poster Session and the Student Session were conducted as part of International Exercise B. In the Poster Session, 36 students in the 1st to 3rd batch of the Green Asia Program (in the 3rd to 5th years of the 5-years program) made a poster presentation on the progress and achievements of their researches, and actively answered questions in bounded time (Photo 6-2). In the Student Session, all of the Green Asia Program students who were preliminary divided into eight groups discussed about predetermined topics in each group (Photo 6-3 and Table 6-1). Then representative(s) of each of the groups gave an oral presentation about the summary and the results of the discussion. Finally, Prof. Akira Harata (Director of the Green Asia Program) made a closing address. In this forum, the 2nd batch students in the 4th year of the 5-years program played an important role to preliminary determine the topics in each discussion group and chair the discussion of the day. They also chaired not only the oral presentation of the Student Session but also three invited lectures in the morning session. This forum had 128 participants from inside and outside Japan, and was considered a success.

International Forum for Green Asia 2017 was held at the Chikushi campus on November 29, 2017 (Photo 6-5), in collaboration with the 19th Cross Straits Symposium on Energy and Environmental Science and Technology (CSS-EEST19) held at the same place from the late afternoon on November 29 to 30, which has been hosted by the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, Kyushu University, along with Shanghai Jao Tong University and Pusan National University. In the morning session of the invited lectures, therefore, three professors from the above two universities delivered lectures. Associate Prof. Xiaoqiang Zhai (Shanghai Jao Tong University) and Prof. Donggeun Lee (Pusan National University) explained the fundamental concepts as well as the latest research developments for solar energy systems in buildings and for anode performance in a direct coal fuel cell, respectively. Prof. Xinde Cao (Shanghai Jao Tong University) introduced advanced applications of heavy metals-laden biochar to a super capacitor. The 3rd batch Green Asia Program students (in the 4th year of the program) shared important roles, such as edit of the proceedings, setting up the sites, persons in a registration desk, a moderator of the lecture session, and a chair of each of three invited lectures, as an obligatory requirement for International Exercise B2.

In the afternoon, the Poster Session was conducted as a part of International Exercise B. The 2nd to 4th batch students (in the 3rd to 5th years) of the Green Asia Program presented papers on the progress and results of their studies. The participants actively discussed for 100 minutes.

This forum had 107 participants in total from inside and outside Japan, and was considered a success (Photo 6-6).

(3) International Forum for Green Asia 2018

International Forum for Green Asia 2018 was held at the Chikushi campus on October 19, 2018

(Photo 6-7). This year the forum was carried out in collaboration with the International Exchange

and Innovation Conference on Engineering and Sciences (IEICES) 2018 held on October 18 and 19,

which has been conducted as an annual conference of the Intellectual Exchange and Innovation

program in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, and a part of the Poster

Session was implemented as International Forum for Green Asia 2018.

A total of 33 students in the 3rd to 5th batches of the Green Asia Program made their

presentations on the progress and results of their studies as a part of tasks of International Exercise B.

In addition, the 4th batch students contributed to some staff works such as making the proceedings,

preparation of the sites, and operation of the forum on the day as a part of tasks of International

Exercise B2.
