PREFACE

Since 1823 when the family of Henry Robinson first settled

th·e land now known as Carroll county, the residents of our

communit y harve been called upon to s·end men to four wars

the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I and

World War II.

To the many who served, the people of Carroll county have

always hidd a special reverence. In this community wh ere

we look upon God as our Makie1· and as our Judge; whlere the

dignity of the law has always been upheld; where love of

country comes before love of self, the thoughts of war are

abhorent. But in t imes of peril, we have rallied to the cause

with the blood of our able~bodied men and women.

In publishing this book wie have had but 10ne prayer, and

one fervant wish- and it is t hat it will never be necessary to

publish another. As t h'e mothers of the sons and daughters

w'ho served, we pray for t he return of a peacieful world, where

all men evierywhere can walk in t he sun and be unafraid.

And as at night I went past t he Abbey, saw its walls towering high and solemn among th.e; Autumn stars, I pfotured to mys·elf the white population in the vast darkness of its inteirior-all that hushed peaple of Hercres-: not dead, I would think th('m, but animated with a still kind of life, and at last, after all their intolera:ble toils, t he sounding tumult of battle, and perilous sea-path s, resting there, tranquil and satisfied and glorious, amid the epitaphs and allegorical figures of their tombs; - those high-piled, trophied, shapdess Abbey tombs1, that long ago they toiled for, and laid down theix gallant lives to win.
