Conclusion
IntroductionThe Department of VeteranAffairs offers a disabilitycompensation program tocertain veterans in whichdisabled veterans who are unableto work are paid veteranscompensation benefits at the100percent rate, even though theVA has not rated their schedularservice-connected disability atthat level.
IndividualunemployabilityTo receive individualunemployability, the individualmust be a veteran who is unableto hold a job as a result ofservice-connected disabilitiesand has one disability rated at 60percent or more, or multipledisabilities, with one rated 40percent or higher and with atotal rating of 70 percent ormore.
TDIU RatingIf a veteran does not precisely qualify for a TDIU rating, itmay be possible to qualify for benefits if the veteran can showthat one or more of his or her service-connected disabilityprevents him or her from obtaining employment, regardlessof the percentage of the disability rating.
Benefits forVeteransA veteran can receive both SocialSecurity disability benefits (SSDI)and total-disabilityunemployability (TDIU)simultaneously with no offset. Each program defines disabilityin a different way and approvalfor one does not guaranteeentitlement to the other. Inaddition, the VeteransAdministration is not allowed toconsider age when consideringbenefits for veterans applying forTDIU or other veterans disabilitybenefits.
