Along the Prairie Path….

The library initiated the community’s annual Veterans Day Salute seventeen years ago. Since the re-dedication of the Veterans Memorial on State Road, we’ve worked in concert with Stickney Township and the Mayor’s office in recogni-tion of the men and women who have served, and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

What a joy to scan the crowd from the podium and see the hats, jackets and insignia of those we honor on that day and their families and friends. What a privilege to stand among them and hear their stories of heroism and patriotism. How exciting to see the young adults of Reavis, Queen of Peace and St. Laurence High Schools actively participate in this solemn remembrance.

The public reception of this event is bar none. I constantly hear feedback of the most positive nature with respect to the presentations, the youth/school participation, consideration and recognition of our Veterans, and the dignity with which we offer our tribute.

There’s always a story that comes from hosting this event. At our program in 2011 the standing flag that we bring from the library at which to recite the Pledge of Allegiance fell down - evidently more than once. In the flurry of things I was doing, I hadn’t noticed, but then at one point I saw a lone, elderly Veteran, his white hair tossed about in the wind. He was wearing his Legion hat and standing solo next to the flag at attention. He came up to me at the end of the event and said, “I hope you didn’t mind me standing next to the flag, Ruth. The wind took it a couple of times and I didn’t want it to fall on the ground again.” This is the image that I will keep of 11-11-11. I will always remember the older Veteran keeping watch over the colors long after his tour of duty had ended.

Come – join us – in saluting the men and women of our community who have given their all to preserve the freedoms we enjoy each and every day.

Our Veterans Day Salute will begin at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2013 at the community’s Veterans Memorial Park at State Road and Melvina Avenue. It lasts about 20-30 minutes at the park and then everyone is invited back to the library for

coffee, punch, cake, entertainment (Dean Milano/music of the 60’s-70’s) and a token gift. These events are free; but most of all they’re heartfelt. I hope to see you there. Ruth E. Faklis Director

History Corner

This photograph was taken fourteen years ago on November 11, 1999, the day that the Veterans Memorial was dedicated. Do you recognize the corner at State Road and Melvina Avenue?

As I reviewed the event photos for this short article, I was taken aback by the site. The trees were short, the bushes were small, and the sculpture was the focal point of the small plot of land dedicated to our community’s heroes. Today the bushes are dense and pruned, the trees are towering over the sculpture and the flag stands out above their highest limbs.

If you haven’t visited this community site, I highly encourage you to do so this month. Read the various plaques and markers that honor our local Veterans and pay tribute to the sacrifice of duty of our servicemen and women.
