Home Depot Military Discount: The Home Depot(R) is offering all active duty personnel, reservists, retired military, veterans and their families a 10 percent discount off their purchases

The offer is valid on purchases of up to $2,000 for a maximum of $200 and is available at The Home Depot stores, The Home Depot Design Center locations, Yardbirds and EXPO Design Center(R) locations. The 10% military discount is available everyday for active duty and retirees, but not all veterans. Home Depot makes this offer available to all veterans on most military holidays. You can also find Home Depot discounts online.

Lowe’s Military DiscouNt: Lowe’s Companies, Inc. will offer all active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel and their immediate family members a 10 percent discount on in-store U.S. purchases made during the Veterans Day holiday. The discount is available Nov. 7 – Nov. 11. The discount is available on in-stock and special order purchases up to $5,000. To qualify, individuals must present a valid military ID or other proof of service. Excluded from the discount are sales via Lowes.com, previous sales, and purchases of services or gift cards. Like Home Depot, Lowes offers this discount daily to active duty military members, but not to veterans. However, they extend the offer to military veterans on military holidays. Free Park Admissions for Veterans Day 2012

Anheuser-Busch Parks. Anheuser-Busch Parks offers Active Duty Service Members free admission for them and up to 3 dependents to any of their parks once a year. Throughout 2012, members of the military and as many as three direct dependents may enter SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or Sesame Place parks with a single-day complimentary admission. The Here’s to the Heroes program is only available to Any active duty, activated or drilling reservist, or National Guardsman. Eligible parks include: Adventure Island, Busch Gardens (Tampa Bay or Williamsburg), SeaWorld (Orlando, San Diego, or San Antonio), Sesame Place, and Water Country USA. Not valid at Discovery Cove and Aquatica. Christmas Town at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. is not included as part of this program. Colonial Williamsburg Free Admission. Colonial Williamsburg offers free weekend-long admission tickets to active-duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their immediate dependents from Thursday, Nov. 9 through Monday, Nov. 12th. The complimentary ticket includes admission to Colonial Williamsburg exhibition sites, art museums, and most daytime programs, as well as free parking and use of the shuttle bus system. Fee Free Day at National Parks. To honor America’s service men and women, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that areas managed by the National Park Service would not charge entrance fees for Veterans Day weekend – November 10-12, 2012. Everyone is eligible, not just veterans. Over 100 national Parks will be participating in this event.

Historic Jamestowne – Free Admission. The National Park Service commemorates Veterans Day with Fee Free days at Historic Jamestowne November 10-12. Free admission for everyone. See events calendar.

Knotts Berry Farm Military Tribute Days – Free Admission – 2012. Knott’s Berry Farm has an annual Military Tribute event in which they offer military members past and present by offering free park admission. This year the Military Tribute Days run from November 1 – 21 November. Veterans or current serving military personnel plus one guest get in FREE with proper ID presented at Knott’s turnstile (DD214, Veterans Administration Hospital ID or Active Military Service ID). Pro Football Hall of Fame – Free Admission, Nov. 3. 2012. Annual Veterans Day Salute, Saturday, November 03, 2012, 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM. Any veteran or member of the armed forces and their spouse or a guest will be admitted free of charge to the Hall of Fame for a day-long recognition of US Military veterans. Members of the Blue and Gold Star Mothers will also be eligible for free admission. Veterans and guests also receive a 10% discount in the Hall of Fame Store. Bed and Breakfast for Vets

In the third year of the program, B&Bs for Vets has organized over 230 (and counting) participating Bed and Breakfasts and Inns across the US and Canada which will be offering veterans a free night’s stay on November 10th, the night before Veterans Day. This offer is available to both active duty military members and veterans with ID, but space is limited. Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military

personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That's not quite true. Memorial

Day is the day set aside to honor America's war dead.

Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is

largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. November 11 of each

year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the

lives to keep our country free.

Armistice Day

To commemorate the ending of the "Great War" (World War I), an "unknown soldier" was buried in highest place

of honor in both England and France ( (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These

ceremonies took place on November 11th, celebrating the ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m.,

November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This day became known internationally

as "Armistice Day".

In 1921, the United States of America followed France and England by laying to rest the remains of a World War

I American soldier -- his name "known but to God" -- on a Virginia hillside overlooking the city of Washington

DC and the Potomac River. This site became known as the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier," and today is called

the "Tomb of the Unknowns." Located in Arlington National Cemetery, the tomb symbolizes dignity and

reverence for the American veteran.

In America, November 11th officially became known as Armistice Day through an act of Congress in 1926. It

wasn't until 12 years later, through a similar act that Armistice Day became a national holiday.

The entire World thought that World War I was the "War to end all wars." Had this been true, the holiday might

still be called Armistice Day today. That dream was shattered in 1939 when World War II broke out in Europe.

More than 400,000 American service members died during that horrific war.

Veterans Day

In 1947, Raymond Weeks, of Birmingham Ala., organized a "Veterans Day" parade on November 11th to honor

all of America's veterans for their loyal and dedicated service. Shortly thereafter, Congressman Edward H. Rees

(Kansas) introduced legislation to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in order to honor all

veterans who have served the United States in all wars.

In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day, and called upon

Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace. He issued a Presidential Order directing

the head of the Veterans Administration (now called the Department of Veterans Affairs), to form a Veterans

Day National Committee to organize and oversee the national observance of Veterans Day.

Congress passed legislation in 1968 to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. However as it

became apparent that November 11th was historically significant to many Americans, in 1978, Congress

reversed itself and returned the holiday to its traditional date.

Veterans Day National Ceremony

At exactly 11 a.m., each November 11th, a color guard, made up of members from each of the military branches,

renders honors to America's war dead during a heart-moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in

Arlington National Cemetery.

The President or his representative places a wreath at the Tomb and a bugler sounds Taps. The balance of the

ceremony, including a "Parade of Flags" by numerous veterans service organizations, takes place inside the

Memorial Amphitheater, adjacent to the Tomb.

In addition to planning and coordinating the National Veterans Day Ceremony, the Veterans Day National

Committee supports a number of Veterans Day Regional Sites. These sites conduct Veterans Day celebrations

that provide excellent examples for other communities to follow.

Veterans Day Observance

Veterans Day is always observed on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. The

Veterans Day National Ceremony is always held on Veterans Day itself, even if the holiday falls on a Saturday or

Sunday. However, like all other federal holidays, when it falls on a non-workday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the

federal government employees take the day off on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the

holiday falls on Saturday).

Federal government holiday observance (for federal employees, including military) is established by federal law.

5 U.S.C. 6103 establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees: New Year's Day, Birthday of

Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington's Birthday (President's Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day,

Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

This federal law does not apply to state and local governments. They are free to determine local government

closings (including school closings) locally. As such, there is no legal requirement that schools close of Veterans

Day, and many do not. However, most schools hold Veterans Day activities on Veterans Day and throughout the

week of the holiday to honor American veterans.

Veterans Day Around the World

Many other countries honor their veterans on November 11th of each year. However, the name of the holiday

and the types of ceremonies differ from the Veterans Day activities in the United States.

Canada, Australia, and Great Britain refer to their holidays as "Remembrance Day." Canada and Australia

observe the day on November 11, and Great Britain conducts their ceremonies on the Sunday nearest to

November 11th.

In Canada, the observance of "Remembrance Day" is actually quite similar to the United States, in that the day is

set aside to honor all of Canada's veterans, both living and dead. One notable difference is that many Canadians

wear a red poppy flower on November 11 to honor their war dead, while the "red poppy" tradition is observed in

the United States on Memorial Day.

In Australia, "Remembrance Day" is very much like America's Memorial Day, in that its considered a day to honor

Australian veterans who died in war.

In Great Britain, the day is commemorated by church services and parades of ex-service members in Whitehall, a

wide ceremonial avenue leading from London's Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square. Wreaths of poppies are

left at the Cenotaph, a war memorial in Whitehall, which was built after the First World War. At the Cenotaph

and elsewhere in the country, a two-minute silence is observed at 11 a.m., to honor those who lost their lives in

wars.

Have You Hugged Your Veteran Today?

One of the most personal and meaningful Veterans Day activities for people is to send notes or cards to

hospitalized veterans or those living in veterans homes. Or, better yet, visit a veteran in a local veterans

hospital or veterans home. The best way to have a "happy Veterans Day" is to do something special to make a

veteran happy.

Arlington National Cemetery

November 11, 2012, 11 a.m. Across the Potomac from Washington at the west end of the Memorial Bridge, Arlington,

Virginia. (703) 607-8000 This is the national Veterans day service with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the

Unknown Soldier. Seating in the amphitheater is limited, so visitors should plan to arrive at least a half hour before the

ceremony.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

November 11, 2012, 1 p.m. Constitution Avenue and Henry Bacon Dr. NW, Washington, DC. Color guard, speakers and a

wreath-laying ceremony pay tribute to all who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War America's other conflicts.

Washington will lay a wreath, at the Lone Sailor Statue in commemoration of Veterans Day. As part of the Memorial’s

“Authors on Deck” book lecture series, authors Dwight Zimmerman and John Gresham will present Uncommon Valor: The

Medal of Honor and The Six Warriors Who Earned it in Afghanistan and Iraq. The presentation begins at noon.

Air Force Memorial

moment of silence will be observed to commemorate those members of the U.S. armed forces who were killed during war.

Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens

November 11, 2012. Mount Vernon, Virginia. Special activities include a patriotic community concert by the all-veteran

barbershop chorus at 11 a.m., at 2 p.m. wreathlaying at the tomb of our first commander-in-chief, George Washington.

Active duty military personnel and veterans are admitted free-of-charge. The wreathlaying is included with regular Mount

Vernon admission. The barbershop concert and Martha Washington program are free.

Manassas Veterans Day Parade

November 10, 2012, 11 a.m. Manassas, Virginia. The community parade includes military and high school bands, pipe and

drum corps teams, military units from the various Armed Services, military vehicles, and members from local veteran

organizations.

BATTLEFILEDS

1. Antietam National Battlefield

Sharpsburg, Maryland. Located 70 miles north of Washington, DC. The Battle of Antietam was the first invasion

by the Confederate Army into the North during the Civil War. In just one day, 23,000 soldiers were killed,

wounded or missing. Take a self-guided 8 1/2 mile auto tour or hike through the battlefield. Regularly scheduled

events are scheduled throughout the year. The new Pry House Field Hospital Museum features exhibits relating to

the care of wounded.

2. Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park

Bristow, Virginia. Prince William County's newest Civil War Battlefield Park opened to the public in October 2007.

The 127-acre park features interpretive signs, a pond and nearly three-miles of walking and equestrian trails

through scenic woods, leading up to 203 mostly unmarked gravesites of Confederate soldiers.

3. Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park

Located 55+ miles southwest of Washington, DC. There are four Civil War battlefields in Fredericksburg &

Spotsylvania Counties in Northern, Virginia: Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

Driving tours and walking trails are available through each battlefield. It is suggested to start your day at the

Visitor Centers at the Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville Battlefields to gather information, maps and directions.

Guided tours and special events are scheduled seasonally.

4. Gettysburg National Military Park

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Located 80 miles north of Washington, DC. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning

point of the Civil War during which 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured over a three-day period.

This important historic site attracts visitors from all over the country to participate in a wide variety of activities

including walking and driving tours, campfire programs, living history demonstrations, Junior Ranger programs

and specialized group tours. A new Museum and Visitor Center and Cyclorama Gallery opened in 2008.

5. Manassas National Battlefield Park

Manassas, Virginia. Located 32 miles west of Washington, DC. The 5000-acre park preserves the site of the First

and Second Battles of Manassas during the Civil War. The Henry Hill Visitors Center features a 45-minute

orientation film and a museum exhibiting civil war era uniforms, weapons and artifacts. The park offers a variety

of activities, scenic vistas, and walking trails. As home to numerous bird species, Manassas National Battlefield

Park has recently been named as an important birding site by the National Audobon Society.

6. Monocacy National Battlefield

Frederick, Maryland. Located 41 miles northwest of Washington, DC. The Battle of Monocacy was the last time

that the Confederacy invaded the North during the Civil War. This battle is important to our region's history

because it saved Washington, DC from attack. The Visitor Center features electronic maps, historical artifacts and

interpretive displays of the battle. A variety of programs are offered by rangers and volunteers. There is a 5-stop

self-guided auto tour and several walking trails.
