Whenwritingaresearchpaper,thestudentshouldfollowacceptedacademicstandardsforcitation,style,andformat.Citationistheactofcarefullyandappropriatelygivingcredittothoseauthorswhohaveinfluencedyourideas,anditalsogivesyourreaderstheinformationtheyneedtofindthesourcethemselves.Itisessentialthatyouaccuratelyandproperlydocumentyoursources.Styleandformatdealwithhowthatinformationispresentedwhenwritingapaper.Thereexistseveralstylestocitesources,butwewillonlypresentoneapprovedatCCBC—the“Notes-Bibliography”styledescribedintheChicagoManualofStyleandTurabian’sManualforWriters.Thefollowingguideismeanttoprovideyouwithbasicinformationtogetyoustarted.MoredetailedinformationcanbeobtainedbyreferringtotheChicagoManualofStyle,16thEdition,Turabian’sAManualforWriters,8thEdition,andTheChristianWriter’sManualofStyle,4thEdition.Webeginwithadiscussionofbasicpaperformatting.

Block Quotations

Ifyouquotefiveormorelinesofasinglesource,useanindentedblockquotation.Ablockquotationshouldbeleft-aligned,single-spaced,andalineofspaceshouldbeaddedbeforeandafterit.Indenttheentirequotationuptothesamelevelasfirstindentedlineofaparagraph(typically(.5”)anddonotusequotationmarks.Indentthefirstlineonlyifitbeginsaparagraphintheoriginalsource.

Quoting the Bible

CitingtheBibleisuniquefortworeasons:parentheticalnotesareusedinsteadoffootnotes(forCCBCpapers),andyoudonotneedtoincludeanentryfortheBibleintheBibliography.ThefirsttimeyouquotetheBible,addafootnotestating,“Unlessotherwisenoted,allScripturereferencesaretakenfromthe[versionname].”Wheneveryoureferenceadifferentversion,orifyoudonotwishtoidentifya“default”versionforyourmajorityofyourreferences,includetheabbreviationoftheversionintheparentheticalnote,e.g.(Matt.29:18-20NKJV).Nocommaisusedbetweenthereferenceandtheversion,andthefinalperiodisplacedaftertheparentheticalnotecontainingtheScripturereference.Acommaandaspaceshouldbeusedtoseparatenon-continuousverses,e.g.(John3:16,18NKJV).
