As the land is limited and the density of

population is high, I was trying to represent

Taiwanese traditional living quality in the

vertical direction.

Mixed using of commercial and residential is

the typical living style in Taiwan. Most people

heavily depend on the convenient living

functions in their neighborhood. Besides, it is

also allows people to have a better interaction

with others. The community will be built up in

informal way.

I believe that the key point of creating

the vertical village is “Social Community.”

Therefore, I researched a typical community,

WUFENPU OF WHOLESALE CLOTHING, and

figured out the rule and key elements for my

transforming it on present needs.

WufenpuWufenpu is a commercial area which developed from the wholesale clothing in Taipei, Taiwan. The building is a classical Taiwanese housing type, Modern Shop House. It's combining the residential and commercial space in a building.

Differents width of the streets Structure of the streets

Street systemThe structure of streets defines the quality of activities in a block. Having variety of streets network is giving more interesting space experience for walkers. The scale of streets also is one of key elements for increasing the variety of space interested.

Walking RangeAs a commercial space from a street into an area, people would not only have one direction and one chooses of route. Therefore, people could choose a route by themselves.

Overlapping the space usageA block could provide different needs because variety of supply. Therefore, the public space could give different people for different needs. The chance of interaction amount of people and space usage of efficiency would rise.

STAIRStair is an important element which is not only connecting the space with different levels but also an interface between the commercial and residential space. It’s an important architecture element for combining different space in one building on vertical direction.

The Space extending verticallyAccording to the community survey, I found that people only using public space on ground floor, to go around the community. If the aticities need to be entend to vertical direction, I have to find the way to change the human behavior to walking up.

Unit of shop house development The form of a shop house was transformed into a new mixed using house in vertical direction.

Exploding a unit The unit was exploded into 4 parts.

Units' combination Changeable housing spaceAccording to the function of unit, units are combined with different way for creating the street network.

Vertical networkIn a 90m*40m area

It's a vertical mixed using of commercial and residential village which is combining with the units to make a new streets system. The quality of the connection is similar with Wufenpu and Taiwanese life style.

New Shop HouseIn the new type of shop house, the commercial space is connected together and the living space is facing each other.

In this vertical house, modren people not only could get personal yard but also have better light and ventialation in modern house.
