Aircraft Deaths— Fixed Wing Only To August 1914 For many of us, the history of aviation is full of heroes, reaching ever higher. We remember those who flew “firsts”, and who set records. All too often, we forget that the conquest of the skies was not without cost and failures. Many of the early aviators died in their efforts, and remain all-but-forgotten, as shown by the fact that I cannot readily retrieve first, or even family, names for all of them, and some remain “unnamed”. At various times, and in various groups of aviators, the death rate was reported to be as high as 87%, though the overall death rate was of course much lower than that. In order to honor those who died to give us wings, the following list has been compiled. Although it contains more than 1000 names, and this edition contains a significant number of new additions, the list is obviously incomplete—I am sure I have completely missed some deaths which were not reported in the references I have examined (This is especially the case of pilots who did not come from Europe or North America). It also excludes many accidents listed as leading to "severe injuries", unless I have other evidence that the pilot died. The nationalities of some pilots are unknown, though generally, it can be assumed that they were nationals of whatever country they died in (that should cover 80+ %). I would hesitate to say that it is impossible for a lighter-than-air death (or several) to have slipped in, but the sources I am working from do say these are airplane, rather than lighter-than-air deaths. Many so-called “aviation deaths” in this era are from parachuting exhibitions/failures—I have excluded these, as not being directly due to aviation. When possible, I have also included persons on the ground struck and killed by aircraft, though most of these remain unidentified. Death rates due to accidents in these early aviators were higher than this list implies, as many of the early pioneers who learned to fly in this period died in crashes later than the period I am examining. When dates are shown in the format xx/yy or xx-yy, that says there is a discrepancy in my records, and I have found both dates given. On examination, I find that often one is the date of the crash, and the other is the date of actual death. In other cases, especially for the U.S. deaths, it seems to be problems with when the crash occurred and when the report was received in Europe (which is the source of most of my data). There is a distinct problem with dates for Russian aviators, as there is a discrepancy between the European Julian calendar and the Russian Gregorian calendar in use at the time. Some Russian deaths were reported in European press reports, and used the Julian calendar, while data from Russian sources would have used the Gregorian calendar—I have not tried to correct for this, and have listed the dates I have found published. Generally, where there is a discrepancy, I have tried to give sources for each of the dates given.

Aircraft Deaths— Fixed Wing Only To August 1914

For many of us, the history of aviation is full of heroes, reaching ever higher.

Where different spellings of names have been found, I have included all these spellings, in the format “(also as xxxxx)”, so as to facilitate cross-referencing of references. This is especially a problem with Russian and other Slavic names, as various transliterations are possible. Women are named in Red Bold Type (not for any reason except that these are the people I am really studying). Although I have tried to exclude combat deaths from WWI, some of those shown as having died in late 1914 after the start of the war may be combat deaths, but I will leave them in until I can confirm this. I do not consider crashes or training accidents during the war (in August 1914) as being combat deaths, so those are left in, when I have the data available, though I have not tried to accumulate such data. Combat deaths from previous wars (e.g. the Balkan Wars) have been included when possible. It is interesting to find that a number of deaths which have been reported over the years seem to have been based on misreporting, frequently when a pilot was severely injured, but did not die as a result of the crash. In at least one case, a frequently reported pilot death has been examined in depth and such a pilot appears to have never existed. I have no explanation for that case, though some sources have blamed newspaper hoaxes. Two changes have been made in recent editions of the list, including this one — Names are now followed by data regarding pilot licenses held by the aviators, when I have that information available. This should assist in differentiating between different pilots with similar names. This information is in the form (X###), in which X is the country which licensed that individual (A=Austria, B=Belgium, F=France, UK= United Kingdom, US= USA, I=Italy, R=Russia, Swiss=Swiss). Additionally, at the request of several readers, I have started providing sources for the information provided. Thus, the last column is a listing of some of my sources. This source information is incomplete, and will be further developed in later editions, as I have time. Those who have provided me information and corrections will note that numerous changes have been made in response—Thank you for your assistance. If any reader has more information which would assist in completing this effort, I would be very happy to have them get in touch with me. If any reader has any additions or corrections (including spellings of names, as press reports of this era are particularly bad in this regard), I would love to know about them. If I have made egregious errors, please let me know, and I will make the corrections. Please join me in honoring those who died in the Pioneer Era to give us wings. Thanks. Dave Lam
