James:Asamatteroffact,Ido.AnindependentOperatorworkingfromaninlandbargeinsouthernLouisianalostaconventionaldrillstringtoadepletedsandzone.TheOperatorhadtoabandonthestuckdrillingassembly,retrivethesalvageableportionofthedrillstringandsidetrackthewelltobypasstheinaccessibleportionofthewellbore.Jason: Depletedzonesareriskyenough,butdontsidetracksrepresentanevengreaterriskoflosingthewellborealtogether?James:Yes,thatsright.Sidetracksespeciallythroughdepletedsandzonesareparticularlychallenging.Butifyouaresuccessful,youvejustsavedawellbore.Atthetimeweworkedtheplanforthissidetrack,itwasonlythethirdtimewewentintotheholewiththeintentionofdrillinginwiththeVersaFlexsystem.ButboththeOperatorandourfieldengineerknewthatevenifwedidnotgetallthewaythroughthedepletedzone,placingthelinershoeasdeeplyaspossiblewhileusingtheVersaFlexexpandablelinerhangerwouldprovidethestabilityneededtoenablerunninginwithadrillstringandtocontinuedrillingoutthewell.Jason: YouconvincedtheOperator,andplannedtogetdownasfarasyoucould.Howdidthisturnout?James: TheVersaFlexELHsystemdrilled137ftofnewholeandsuccessfullypassedthroughtheentiredepletedzone,makingittoanacceptablesettingdepth.Asaresult,thelinershoewasplacedat15,124ftandcementedsuccessfully.TheVersaFlexhangerwassetat13,866ftandtestedto3,100psi.Notonlydidwesaveseveraldaysofrigtime,butwhatisreallysignificantisthatwesuccessfullyreachedtheplanneddepth.TheOperatormovedintothecompletionphaseandwasabletoproducefromthiswellwithin45daysofoursuccessfullyhelpingthemsidetracktheportionwiththeabandonedconventionaldrillstring.
