Spring Fair With over 75 items donated for the silent auction at the Spring Fair (including a BMW hire for the weekend!), many rides, food vans and community groups in attendance, the students are very excited about the Spring Fair. A big THANK YOU to more than 80 parents and grandparents who have volunteered to help man a stall. We are still looking for more volunteers to assist with set up on the day, Community Network stalls and pack up. Please email your classroom teacher if you, a carer or grandparent is available on the day and we will include you in the roster. Friday 20 th September is our final collection day where we are asking for donations of soft drink or bottles of water (Foundation to Year 2), and family size blocks of chocolate (Years 3 to 6). We kindly ask that you check the used by date on each product as we have over 60 cans and 30 blocks of chocolate donated in the first collection that were out of date and unfortunately had to be disposed of. Child Safety Week Next week is Child Safety Week at Vermont Primary School. To kick off this celebration we invite the children to wear bright colours to school on Monday 9 th September in theme of staying safe. This is NOT a gold coin donation this year due to the donation collection for the Spring Fair. I strongly encourage you to read the Child Safety Parent Brochure emailed to you by your classroom teacher as it contains detailed information about what the students will be exploring at school. You can support this learning by talking with your children about what they can do if they feel unsafe, identify adults the children can talk to when needed and what supports are available to those that require them. If you are concerned about the safety of any student at Vermont Primary School, please inform one of the Principal Team or classroom teacher. Production The first 4 weeks of Term 4 will run an alternate timetable to allow for Production Workshops to occur for all students in Years 3 to 6. If your child is impacted by any change, you will be notified by your classroom teacher or through the Level Communication Note. The students have been learning their lines, practising their songs and dances and the teachers have been working hard building and sourcing props. We are looking forward to bringing the show to you at the end of October. The Resilience Project Last week Year 1 students explored how we can express emotions using our facial expressions and body language. Students had a lot of fun using mime to show different feelings and events. Can you tell who is showing which emotion?

EXCITED? ANGRY? TIRED? HAPPY?

Vermont Primary School Curriculum Celebrating Book Week in Foundation We had so much fun in Foundation during Book Week. After the excitement of dressing up and the Parade, we explored our favourite authors! Every morning, we read as many of their books as we could by Matt Cosgrove, Julia Donaldson, Aaron Blabey, Eric Carle and Nick Bland. Next, we created our own unicorns, alpacas, ladybirds, whales and cranky bears in response to these wonderful books. We were even lucky enough to share Story Time with the Vermont Kinder groups; reading the Rainbow Bear by Michael King before decorating our very own Rainbow Bears! We loved all the fun activities during Book Week and can’t wait till next year!

Grade 6 Canberra Camp 2019

Students from our school have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. (This was factored into the cost of the camp prior to parents paying.)

Year 6 Camp On Monday the 26th August, all the Year 6s journeyed to the Australian capital (Canberra), otherwise known as the ACT. After a long 9 hour bus ride, we arrived at the IBIS Styles Hotel. During our stay, we had amazing experiences such as having a tour at Government House, visiting Parliament House, National Art Gallery, Questacon, the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport), PEO and going to the Australian War Memorial. It truly was an amazing experience for everyone and definitely one to remember. Written by Jaslina, Kyla and Madison (6JS)

eSmart Week

Use this QR code or CLICK HERE to let us know you have read the article! National eSmart week is held this week, but Vermont Primary will be celebrating the week as part of Child Safety Week from September 9-13. You would have received a brochure outlining all the different eSmart activities our students will be participating in. If you would like to find out what our Year 6 students have been doing as part of the eSmart Digital Licence Program CLICK HERE to take a sample quiz and see how eSmart you are! Finally here are the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s Top 10 Cyber Tips

1. Care about the Share Social media wants you to share as much as you can bear! But the share should be rare. NEVER share: passwords, private/personal information, your location.

2. Privacy Matters If you care about the share, you’ll protect your privacy, no matter what. Regularly check your privacy settings on social media, and always think before you post. It’s amazing where data ends up – usually all over the internet.

Page 5: Vermont Primary School PO ox 53 Nurlendi Road Vermont 3133 ... · Safety Parent Brochure emailed to you by your classroom teacher as it contains ... Art Gallery, Questacon, the AIS

5

3. Respect the Privacy of Others Treat others’ privacy as you would your own. Ask for your friends’ permission before uploading photos and videos of them. It’s not all about you.

4. Keep Everything Updated Any idea what causes the most security breaches on the internet? Software that isn’t up-to-date. Seems crazy simple, but it’s true! Be vigilant about updating software, including apps, anti-virus and even the humble browser.

5. Spam, Spam, Spam, Spammidy-spam Even with the best anti-spam and malware software – that’s up-to-date – spam is the modern version of junk mail. It’s everywhere! Learn how to tell the difference between real emails and messages, and dodgy things with dodgy links. Sometimes they don’t look so dodgy...always be suspicious of hyperlinks in emails.

6. Control the Troll Within There be trolls out there – beware! Don’t feed them, don’t give them what they want: an angry response. Block/Report the trolls. But also: resist the inner troll. If you’re not adding something positive to the debate online, don’t bother. Don’t be part of the problem.

7. Cyberbullying and Harassment If you’re being targeted by this kind of behaviour, know what you can do, and where you can get help. Visit the National Centre Against Bullying website and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner's website.

8. Keep Your Friends Close and Strangers at Arm’s Length Do you know how many true friends most people have? Three. Yup, those four thousand and fifty-two Facebook ‘friends’ are a combination of acquaintances, people-you-met-once, people-you-can’t-remember-meeting-once, and probably, some ‘randoms’. They don’t need to know what you had for breakfast, or what concert you went to last night, do they?

9. Feel the Flow – Keep Your Life in Balance Technology is incredible. Gaming, networking, apps…online shopping! But make sure you take time out and find the right balance for you. Too long on tech can put the world out of whack.

10. Have Fun, Friend Always remember to chill out and keep things in perspective. There’s too much information online to take it all in! Focus on each moment, and enjoy.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, feedback or ideas for future articles. You can use the QR code or link at the top of the article to let me know you have read it. Julie Hall eSmart Co-ordinator [email protected]
