The Vermont Commission on Women Encourages parents to “Listen, Talk and Keep Talking”.

I’m a volunteer Commissioner at the Vermont Commission on Women, a non-partisan state agency dedicated to legislative, economic, social, and political fairness. Our agency works on a variety of issues to improve the lives of women and girls in Vermont, and as a result, fami-lies. We address concerns like childcare, pay equity, education-al attainment, and job training opportunities. We also discuss emerging issues like the effect of the recession on women’s lives and the impact of the econom-ic stimulus on job creation for women.

Another topic that we debated at length this spring at the Commission, as well as many women’s and men’s groups in this state, was the public furor over snowboards with sexual and violent lan-guage and imagery. We found these boards and the accom-panying marketing messages offensive.

In response, the Commission

created “Listen, Talk and Keep Talking.” It’s a simple and short guide for parents on how to talk to their children when confronted with objectionable material or language. It also offers resources for additional information. “Listen, Talk and Keep Talking” is available on the Vermont Commission on Women’s Web site: www.women.state.vt.us.

Our goal with this particular guide is to help concerned par-ents counter media messages and images that objectify and dehumanize women by engag-ing in constructive, caring and informed conversations with their children… hopefully cre-ating positive change within their family and for the next generation of Vermonters.

nition of the supposedly “New Republicanism” in 1956, which so accurately describes today’s Republican leaders: “Don’t just do something! Stand there!”

The Grand Old Party of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Dean Acheson, Senator Robert Taft, Senator Aiken of Vermont, Senator Vandenburg; Governors Scranton, Keane, Whitman, Bush Sr., is for the most part, dead. These giants have been replaced by pygmies, i.e., John Boehmer, Mitch McConnell, Lindsay Graham, Eric Cantor, William Kristol, Rudy Guiliani, etc., who care not about seeking solutions for the grave crises our country is facing, but instead seek ways to thwart and destroy any of Obama’s proposals. They act as if the elections of 2006 and 2008 never occurred.

Moderate Republican leaders have been silenced too long. It is vital that they rise up forcefully and regain control of the party if the party is going to be influen-tial again, the party of the loyal opposition, not the party who says no again and again to any democratic proposal.

If they don’t, then our country will suffer for their inaction. It is easy enough to envision the Democratic Party holding con-

It is not enough for all of the 68% of Vermont voters who vote for Obama to simply sit on our hands and let “George do it”. We only need to examine the disaster of the last eight years of Republican rule to realize the consequences of such behavior. Instead, we must constantly push Leahy, Sanders and Welsh to do all in their power to assure the support of Obama’s proposals.

If we do not, then once again we will surely hear the words of Cassius ringing in our ears, “The fault, Dear Brutus, is not with our stars, but with ourselves”.

...art education...Many schools are facing tough

economic times and often the first to be let go are the arts. Did you know that art education encourages creativity and higher level thinking skills? Did you know that the arts cut across cul-tural, social, and economic bar-riers and enhance appreciation and awareness? Did you know that study after study proves that the arts improve test scores? Did you know that many Fortune 500 companies prize their “artistic” employees because they know problems do not have a right or wrong answer?

It saddens us that the arts are not being supported in the Poultney Community. Poultney High School and Elementary School will now be sharing one art teacher. PHS may be small, but in the past we have shined artisti-cally. In 2006 we had a Judge’s Award at the Congressional Art Show. In 2007 we had three stu-dents accepted on the spot at National Portfolio Days.

Having a full time visual art teacher allowed students to

develop independent studies tai-lor made to their needs at no additional cost to the tax payer. Five such independent studies took place this school year. We have graduates successfully pur-suing degrees in the Visual Arts.

This past year seventh grade did not receive art classes because the high school needed an addi-tional class to accommodate stu-dent demand. Why cut more?

PHS will now be the only high school in our area with a part time art teacher. Don’t our kids deserve better? Were the arts your sanctuary? Are the arts your children’s sanctuary?

The RSWSU Arts Alliance is a driving force behind arts advo-cacy in our schools and sponsor of the annual Arts Celebration, a showcase for the many artistic creations of our students, staff, and community members.

The decision to cut the visual arts is detrimental to the full edu-cation of our district students. We ask that this decision be recon-sidered and that the visual arts program be brought back. We are advocating for the arts. Our members know how important the arts are. Do you? If you care about the arts, please let your voice be heard.

Kevin W. Atwood has gradu-ated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradi-tion and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemi-cal warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field train-ing exercises.

Army National Guard Pvt. Benjamin C. Roden has gradu-ated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military jus-tice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and expe-riencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

He is the grandson of Lenard Roden of White Church Road, Troy, N.Y., and son of Stephen Roden of Storm Hill Road, Johnsonville, N.Y.

Roden is a 2006 graduate of Tamarac High School, Troy.

U.S. Marine Corps Second Lieutenant Daniel M. Hall, son of Ken and Brenda Hallof East Dover, VT, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, on May 22, 2009 and commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Hall successfully com-pleted four years of intensive aca-demic, physical, and professional training, resulting in a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering.

Second Lt. Hall is a 2004 gradu-ate of leland and Gray Union High School, Townshent, VT. His grand-parents are Leonard and Betty Hall of East Dover, VT, and Ray and Mary Clark of Newfane, VT.

The private is a 2008 graduate of Springfield High School.

Dorset Residents Use of Emerald Lake State Park

The Town of Dorset & Vermont State Parks Department have part-nered to offer free day use entry at Emerald Lake State Park to all Dorset Residents for the summer of 2009.

Park Passes can be picked up at the Town Offices from Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., proof of residency is required (driver’s license, util-ity/tax bill etc.).

Emerald Lake State Park is open Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Only Residents with Park Passes will be allowed free entry. For ques-tions contact the Dorset Town Manager’s Office at 362-4571 ext. 3. Be sure to get outside and enjoy summertime in Vermont!

Ham and Strawberries at First Baptist Church

It’s strawberry picking time and the First Baptist Church of Manchester is planning a delicious dinner featuring strawberries as well as ham, salads, Anna Ennis’ maple syrup home-baked beans and home-baked rolls. The star of the show is strawberry shortcake, with homemade bis-cuits, freshly whipped cream and berries prepared that morning.

The dinner is on June 27 at 6 p.m. The dinner is served family style. Requested donation is $10 for adults and $4 for children. Emily Welsh Receives HonorsEmily K. Welsh of Manchester Center, Vt. was named to the spring

dean’s list at Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa. Welsh is a senior in digital communications. Dean’s list students must maintain a grade point average of 3.4 or above on a 4-point scale.

Founded in 1866, today Lebanon Valley College has 1,600 full-time undergraduate students and 160 part-time undergraduates. Lebanon Valley College also offers a four-year graduation guarantee that ensures that students will earn an undergraduate degree in four years of full-time study or the College will provide free tuition for additional courses.

Circus Smirkus Returns

to Manchester Circus Smirkus returns to

Manchester July 8 and 9, show-casing the best young talent in the Circus Arts Today, selected by audition to share the ring with professional circus artists. Enjoy performances under The Big Top at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., daily at the Dorr Farm on Route 30 in Manchester Center, VT .

Circus Smirkus is the brain child of Founding Director, Rob Mermin, who ran off to Europe to apprentice himself in circus life, learning to pound stakes, put up the Big Top, work with ani-mals and train with circus artists.

Rob is an Artist-in-Residence in Vermont and a past Director of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He found-ed Circus Smirkus in Vermont to give kids the chance to run away to their own circus.

The Troupers range in age from 10 to 18. The older Troupers act as assistant crew and men-tors to the younger kids. Trouper graduates can apply to work as crew members with the option of also performing with the troupe.

The young Troupers are the stars of the show! They perform juggling, acrobatics, trapeze, wire walking, clowning – anything that you’d expect to see in a full-length professional circus show.

Stories from Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm will be portrayed. Enjoy their two hour performance with one 15 minute intermission, sharing 15 acts.

Seating is general admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance by credit card by calling the Circus Barn, Inc. at 533-7443 or buy tickets locally (cash and checks only) at The Northshire Bookstore and the Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce. Stenciling Lecture at Dorset Historical Society

Kathie Wall Evans, herself an accomplished craftswoman in the field, will present “The History and Many Faces of Stenciling” at the Dorset Historical Society on Sunday, June 28, 2 to 3:30 p.m. The program is based on the work of Jessica Bond, focus of a new major exhibit at DHS’s Bley House Museum on Route 30 at Kent Hill Road.

Bond, a longtime Dorset resident, immersed herself in the field of early American decoration as historian, collector and master craftsper-son. Her early career centered on the study and techniques of handwork and stenciling on 18th and 19th century furniture, tinware, clocks, mir-rors, reverse glass painting, theorems and other materials. Examples of all these artifacts are included in the exhibit at DHS, which will remain on view through 2009.

After her move to Vermont in 1955, Bond discovered the stenciled or freehand-painted wall decorations in early New England houses. Thereafter she devoted much of her time to documenting these historic designs in photographs and tracings. She also restored colonial stencil-ing, and her work served to track the peregrinations of the itinerant stencilers of old. As Bond’s friend and colleague, Kathie Wall Evans brings special expertise to her subject.

Northshire Baptist Church Vacation Bible School

Northshire Baptist Fellowship is hosting its 2009 Vacation Bible School. All children ages 4 years through grade 6 are invited and wel-come!

This year’s theme is Things Hidden. Each night the children will learn what it means to be a child in God’s Kingdom. Music, crafts, fun and skits will be used to study five different parables of Jesus. SVAC Treks to TurkeyThe Southern Vermont Arts Center’s latest international cultural

excursion, Alexander the Great in Turkey, departs JFK October 20 and returns November 2 (deposit required by July 15!). In between will be, without question, one of the most remarkable and memorable forays into another world imaginable.

For more than two thousand years Alexander the Great has excited the imagination of people around the globe. He inspired his soldiers to march, for 12 years, some 22,000 miles from Greece all the way to India and back to Babylon. By the time the Macedonian king died at the age of thirty-two in 323 BC, much of the known world lay at his feet.

Turkey is a veritable treasure trove for those enthralled by Alexander. Strategically located between two continents, Turkey has been a cross-road for civilizations over the ages. From temples of the ancient Romans to magnificent mosques of the Ottoman sultans, Turkey’s landscape features monuments that bear witness to the historical dramas that unfolded here.

Beginning in the Queen of Cities, Istanbul, the tour will work its way down the exquisite turquoise coast, enjoying the famous hospitality of the Turkish people and sampling the delicious Turkish “meze” (think Mediterranean small-dish smor-gasbord, with booze) while explor-ing the sites of ancient civilizations along the way.

...random thoughts...I had dinner with friends in Manchester one night a couple of weeks

ago, and didn’t leave until around 8:45. It was dark and raining, and a lonely ride home. Being with them, talking, drinking, eating, laughing...all the noise that visiting with friends brings...and then the sudden soli-tude of the ride made me feel very alone. It was one of those “stepping on the rake” moments. I don’t often feel lonely.

I’ve always been a happy person. When I go to bed at night, I look forward to all the things I can accomplish the next day. I keep myself busy with various event committees, Rotary, my work, painting when I get the chance, taking care of my home and property, enjoying my children and friends.

I seldom think about being alone. But when the thought strikes, it’s very hard to shake free. I think about how much I miss my husband; I think about the people, the times, and the adventures that are past and will never happen again. All that laughter, and some crying, too.

The next morning it was back to reality. I found that a tree had fallen on my house! No time for self pity. I was very lucky. No windows broken and hopefully only a few slate shingles damaged. Friends recommend-ed Steve Gallant to remove the tree from the roof, and he was there the next afternoon, ever so gently taking the tree off the roof, and just in time, for we’ve had rain every day since!

Which brings me to last Thursday. Yet another very rainy day. I noted to my friend, as we entered Mulligan’s for lunch, that the slate sidewalk seemed slippery. I tried to be just as careful as I walked out, but my left foot hit a patch of mud, and smack down I went. I want to thank everyone who came to my rescue after I took that spill! So many kind and helpful people came to my aid! One woman parked her car and ran across the road to help! Two ladies in the parking lot came to assist; and so many folks from inside ran out to help! All of you are wonderful, and I’m one embarrassed editor! It took all afternoon for my slacks to dry out!

Visit Famous Local QuarriesThe Dorset Historical Society is sponsoring a series of quarry walks

this year, featuring three different venues of Dorset’s storied marble industry. The walks will be led and embellished by Art Gilbert, retired geologist, who will let you in on the fascinating stone story that under-lies the local terrain, and Susanne Rappaport, curator of DHS’s Bley House Museum. There will be two walks to the Gettysburg Quarry, the first on June 27, the second on July 25. The Folsom Quarry walk will take place on July 18. On August 8, the Freedley Quarry will be the destination. Gather first at 9:30 a.m. at Bley House on Route 30 at Kent Hill Rd. to carpool to the trailhead. Dress appropriately, and bring bug repellent and water. The trail walks are family-friendly and last 2 to 3 hours. Post-walk, view the Marble Room exhibit at Bley House and learn more of the history of marble, the early local industry and the men who worked the quarries.

Manchester Music Festival Announces 35th Concert Series

July marks the beginning of MMF’s 35th season of classical music concerts. “We’re calling this summer’s series ‘35 years of exceptional music,’” says Ariel Rudiakov, MMF’s Artistic Director. “We’re bringing in guest musicians with national and international reputations, as well as familiar players that our audiences love and appreciate.”

The first concert of the summer is Monday, July 6, when this year’s group of Young Artists performs at the Riley Center, on the Burr & Burton campus. “We have attracted 16 talented conservatory players from around the country and around the globe,” said Mr. Rudiakov.

Thursday, July 9 is the Hedwig Montgomery Memorial Concert, the official opening of MMF’s professional concert season. There will be seven Thursday night concerts, each starting at 7:30 at the Arkell Pavilion at Southern Vermont Arts Center.

Grandma Miller’s makes and packages their awesome cookie dough for the Flood Brook Student Activities Cooperative, the organization that funds all the field trips at the school. They make Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Molasses, and Oatmeal Raisin cookie dough, and every year it it is sold for a hugely successful fundraiser. They continue to carry the cookie dough in their South Londonderry location all year round for those that miss the sale or need it at a different time. Lions Club Scholarship WinnersFour graduates of Burr and Burton Academy will each receive $2,000

from the Manchester Lions Club to assist in the cost of college.This year’s recipients are Dunja Jovicic, Rebecca Murphy, Michael

Grossfeld, and Colin O’Leary Dunja will be at Middlebury College in the Fall, Rebecca will attend University of Vermont, Michael will be at Worchester Polytechnic and Colin will be in Scotland at University of St. Andrew. The Lions Scholarship awards are made possible through the club’s fund-raising activities. This year over $25,000 was distributed throughout the community as a result of the club’s efforts during the July auction, Harvest Breakfast, Maple Leaf Half Marathon and $10,000 raffle, among others.

Flower Show a Success!! On Wednesday, June 10, The Garden Club of Manchester pre-

sented a Non-Standard Flower Show. Over 100 enthusiasts enjoyed the exquisite arrangements staged throughout the elegant common areas at Equinox Village, Manchester’s Premier Independent Living Community. Attendees dined on a sumptuous buffet of soups, salads, sandwiches and sweets presented by Equinox Village Executive Chef Glenn Blackledge.

The Gallery at Equinox Village was transformed for the Flower Show’s Horticulture Division themed “Spring into Summer”. The air was heavy with the scent of roses and peonies as club members’ cut specimens and container plants delighted guests.

The Design Division of the Flower Show was themed “Summer Fun”. People’s Choice winners were announced in each of the four categories: Country Classic Weddings – Kathy Dickenson; Graduation - Peggy Donahoe; 4th of July Historic Americana – Joan Fee; Woodland Delights – Brenda Madkour. Rizio-Wood Golf Tournament On Sunday, August 23 at 8 a.m., the 2009 Rizio-Wood Memorial Golf

Tournament will be held at the Golf Course at the Equinox as the major fundraiser for the scholarships given in Joe and Richard’s honor. The money raised at this event will be distributed in scholarships to local people who are interested in working in the fields of professional golf and/or agronomy. Both Joe and Richard were avid supporters of many who were working toward success in these fields.

There are several ways that you can help, whether or not you are a golfer. Sponsorship signs for golf tees are available. Also, there is room for more teams to join in the fun of the tournament. Donations for the successful raffle on tournament day are very welcome — anything from gift certificates to merchandise. There is a lot of offer. Team entry dona-tion includes the round of golf, carts, and a buffet lunch at the Eagles. The tournament is a “scramble” format with prizes awarded through a blind draw of scorecards. More importantly, it is a really fun day and a terrific way to remember two great friends who enjoyed themselves on the golf course.

Part race, part festival, part rally and all heart, the Race is a 5K run or walk to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and breast cancer research and outreach programs in Vermont and New Hampshire. A must-do event for untold numbers, the race annually draws thousands of women, men and children to some of the most quintessentially sce-nic acreage in New England. Great food, ice cream, an incredible silent auction and a Fun Run for kids rounds out the day.

The Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest series of 5k runs in the United States. Since its origination in Dallas in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure series has grown from one local race to a national series of 112 five kilometer (5k) and one-mile fitness runs/walks with more than 1,000,000 participants.

Since the first local race in 1993, the VT-NH Affiliate has netted more than $5.7 million, seventy-five percent of which ($4.3 million) went to local community breast cancer education, treatment and screening programs. SVM Fusion SoccerSVM Fusion Soccer is pleased to announce a new Fall Select Travel

Program for girls entering 7th-8th Grade this coming school season (U14 age team). This is a regional select travel program during the prime soccer season for players interested in and ready for a higher level of play in addition to their existing school program, and players will play against high level teams from across the Northeast. This pro-gram is open to players from all communities and clubs in the region.

The team will be selected from a combination of individual player invitations by Head Coach Andrea Lee and area club coaches plus an open tryout on Wednesday June 24 from 5:30-7:30 at Riley Rink in Manchester, Vermont.

The season will run from early August through mid-November, with two 2-hour practices per week in August, and one weekend 2-hour practice per week from September through season end. Practices will be held in Manchester VT. Teams will enter approximately 3 com-petitive tournaments within a 2-3 1/2 hour radius of Manchester, plus

No Limits Bike Ride It is the middle of June and I have been on my bike only a couple of

times. I need to start riding so that I can be ready for the Bart Center’s NO LIMITS Bike Ride. Yes the event is held on September 19, but I want to be ready to test my LIMITS. The Bart Center’s motto of “The only limits that you have are the limits you set your self ”.

The Bart center has a lot of different options for me to ride. They have a 10 mile, 30 mile, 65, and 100 mile ride. They provide lots of good food at the aid stations and a cook out after the ride. So I better get ready. They have made it easy for me to sign up for this great scenic ride. Race for the Cure Volunteers

Needed ASAPThe annual Komen VT/

NH Race for the Cure®, which takes place this year at Hildene Meadows, in Manchester, Vermont, on Sunday, July 26, would not be possible without the army of volunteers who make it happen year after year.

In the weeks leading up to the Race, volunteers are needed to handle a variety of tasks, includ-ing raffle ticket sales, distribut-ing race posters and information, stuffing Team packets and so on.

Raffle sales will be taking place at Shaw’s in Manchester on Saturday, June 20 and Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on July 18 in the Ben & Jerry’s courtyard, in the Manchester Designer Outlet’s Center, also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shifts of a few hours are ideal but any schedule can be accommodated.

Anyone who’d like to help with raffle ticket sales, or any other pre-Race or Race weekend chores, should download a Volunteer Sign-Up form from vtnhkomen.org, email Volunteer Chair Mary Miller at marymillerlee@comcast .net, or call Mary at 802-362-0108. Kelly Moore, Local Schools Successful With Second Annual Food Drive

With a recession stressed environment felt across the globe, Music For Mankind® founder and U.N. Delegate for the United Nations World Food Program, Kelly Moore has once again been able to con-tribute locally by completing the second annual Music For Mankind® Community Charity Food Drive in an effort to aid the Manchester Community Food Cupboard.

Music For Mankind® held two Food Drives for the Manchester Community Food Cupboard in April. The first was with Manchester

Elementary Middle School (MEMS) which ran from April 6 through 10. The second was with Maple Street School, a private school in Manchester, which ran from April 27 through May 1. Moore had addressed both schools in a presentation prior to the drives about Music For Mankind®, the Music For Mankind® Community Charity Drive.

In addition to the help provided by the students of both schools, Casella Waste Management donated rolling recycle bins in order to transport the amount of donations this year, which was much appreci-ated by all parties involved.

Historic Osprey Nest Destroyed; CVPS Offers Reward

An active Lake Arrowhead osprey nest has been destroyed, and Central Vermont Public Service is offering a reward in an effort to find out how.

CVPS spokesman Steve Costello said, “We’re looking for information from anyone who knows how the nest was destroyed, whether by the hand of a person or Mother Nature.”

If it turns out that the nest was destroyed on purpose, CVPS is offer-ing a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and convic-tion of whoever was responsible.

The nest, on an island in the middle of Lake Arrowhead, was on top of a tripod set up for the birds at the CVPS hydroelectric site. CVPS began working with the state and local resident Meeri Zetterstrom to restore ospreys at the site more than 20 years ago.

“This nest site was the first to produce a chick as part of our efforts at Lake Arrowhead, in 1998,” said Costello, who manages the company’s osprey program. “The ospreys have produced chicks at that site for 11 straight years, and were there when their nest was toppled. It’s unclear whether the birds were still brooding on eggs or chicks had hatched, but either way it’s a big loss.”

Three other osprey nests remain active at Lake Arrowhead, along with dozens of others now scattered across the state.

Anyone with information about the destroyed nest should call Game Warden Curtis Smiley at 849-2156.

The two birds are hanging around near their destroyed nest, which contained eggs or young chicks. Central Vermont Public Service is trying to determine how the nest was destroyed, and is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction if vandal-ism was involved.

Invasive Insect Trackers WantedOn Wednesday, July 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., a workshop on moni-

toring Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer, two poten-tially destructive pests of forest trees, will be held at the New England Tropical Conservatory’s education building in Bennington, from 5:30-7 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public.

The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB), native to eastern Asia, threatens the health of a variety of hardwood trees in North America, including sugar maple. It has been found in New York City, Chicago, southern New Jersey, and, in 2008, in the Worcester, MA region, 60 miles south of the Vermont border.

Early detection is key to stopping the spread of these destructive forest pests, which have already led to the death and decline of millions of hardwood trees across the U.S., and have cost billions of dollars in eradication and outreach efforts.

The workshop is sponsored by the Bennington County Sustainable Forest Consortium, the New England Tropical Conservatory, the VT Agency of Agriculture, and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Shares Four Unique Private Gardens

On Saturday, June 27, visit four private gardens in Manchester through The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program. Visitors may begin the tour at the public gardens at Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, 1005 Hildene Road, in Manchester. President Lincoln’s granddaughter, Jessie Lincoln, designed the formal garden at her parent’s home, Hildene, in 1907. It is an American version of the French parterre. Other gardens at the historic site include the cutting and kitchen gardens, a butterfly garden, an observation garden and a soft fruit cage.

Directions to each of the private gardens are available when you check in at Hildene’s Welcome Center. Hours for the tour are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Garden Conservancy included Manchester area private gardens in its Open Days Program in 2005. At Turkey Hill Farm, the garden layout remains original to the 1930s design, while modern projects include a sculpture garden with a wind-ing arroyo, vegetable gardens, and a former corn crib converted into a guest cottage. The gardens at White Tree Farm include perennial borders supplemented by annual cutting areas and herbs, a unique, old birch tree and other native trees, all surrounded by stone walls. Many garden rooms make up the features of Coventry Cottage – Joan & Lee Fegelman’s Garden. Follow wide grass pathways to view the colorful perennials, wander through an arbor and along the peony/daylily walk, meander on a thyme-scented stone path through the herb garden, and admire the Vermont-hardy rose garden. At The Madkour Garden, a three-acre parcel is divided into several areas, including a bocce court, vegetable garden, a small herb garden, and multiple flower beds. This country setting has marvelous views of the Green Mountains and the Taconic Range.

The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Elizabeth de C. Wilson Museum opens for the summer season on Saturday, July 4, with Paws and Reflect: Art of Canines. There will be a free opening reception with refresh-ments and select exhibiting artists on open-ing day from 2 - 4 p.m. (free, supervised, art-themed play time for children three and older will be offered during the reception).

Paws and Reflect: Art of Canines is a national traveling exhibition intended to recognize and promote excellence in art, and heighten public attention and awareness about the family Canidae. The show con-sists of flatworks in acrylic, gouache, mixed media, oil, pencil, scratchboard, and water-color, and sculptures in bronze by thirty-seven artists who have produced a body of canine-inspired work of consistent quality.

Fifth Annual Tour De Paws Offers Cyclists Three Rides

Second Chance Animal Center will hold the Fifth Annual Tour de Paws on Sunday, July 19. “Riders will be able to choose from among three rides. For those who prefer not to ride, we have a four mile walk,” said Lesley Nase, coordinator of the Tour and a former member of the board of directors at Second Chance Animal Center.

The three bicycle tours include the Metric Century Ride of 63 miles, an In Between Ride of 30-35 miles, and a 15 mile Loop Single and Families Ride. Riders will follow a trail of paw prints past beautiful pastures and over the rolling hills of Vermont. The four mile walk goes to Riley Rink and back by sidewalk through Manchester.

All funds raised by the bicycle rides and walk for the animals will go directly to the care of the dogs and cats at the shelter in Shaftsbury. Costs of the event have been donated by area businesses and individual animal lovers.

The event will be held at the Manchester Recreation Park, Route 30 in Manchester, VT, and participants are invited to attend a hearty, homemade barbecue at the finish of the rides. Meal tickets for family and friends are available.

Cost of the Metric Century ride is $35 through July 10, $40 on the day of the ride and registration will be at 7 a.m., with a start time of 7:30 a.m. Registration for the In-Between ride (which is the same price as the Metric) will be at 8:30 a.m., with a start time of 9 a.m. The Loop Ride is $50 for a family of four and $25 for a single adult. Registration for the Loop Ride will be at 8:30 a.m., with a 9 a.m. start. Walk registration takes place at 9:30 a.m., with a start time of 10 a.m. The registration fee is $25 for a single adult and $40 for a family of four.

Patricia and Donald Oresman, a New York couple with ties to Shrewsbury, Vermont, are sharing a sample of their remarkable col-lection on people reading during this summer’s season at the Weston Playhouse.

“Patricia and I started to collect modern art shortly after we were married in 1948,” said Mr. Oresman. “Our choices were mostly afford-able prints. About 20 years or so ago, we decided to narrow our focus on 20th and 21st century images of people reading as we were omnivorous readers and book collectors.” Over this period, the Oresmans have col-lected about 2,200 images of readers – mostly prints, drawings, water-colors and oils. The collection is largely American but also includes works by Europeans, Asians, Africans and Latin Americans.

The Weston exhibit will include both well known and less known art-ists, including Thomas Hart Benton, William Gropper, Al Hirshfeld and Larry Rivers. Ludy Biddle, a close friend of the Oresmans and trustee of the Weston Playhouse Theatre Company, suggested the exhibition and helped choose the works displayed. The exhibit runs now through September 5.

Mr. Oresman is of counsel to the New York law firm of Simpson, Thacher and Bartlett and was executive vice president and general counsel or Paramount Communications, Inc., a publishing and enter-tainment company.

Photography Exhibit at Rupert Kittay Library

The Rupert Kittay Library is pleased to present the photography of Gene Higgins. Gene can often be seen with his camera in and around the Rupert area. He grew up on a farm in Rupert and graduated from the University of Vermont with a BA in History and English. Since childhood his chief interests have been local and international history and “taking pictures”. He began with his mother’s old Kodak box camera and has progressed through many phases and methods of picture tak-ing. His interests have taken him to many parts of North America and Europe. This exhibit conveys Gene’s desire to preserve scenes, people, and events of everyday life.

On Saturday, July 11 from 3-5 p.m., there will be an opening recep-tion to share the photography of Gene Higgins. The exhibit will contin-ue until August 29 during regular library hours, Tuesday, 2:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, 5-7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, and Sunday, 1-4 p.m. The Kittay Public Library is located at 2827 Rte. 153 in Rupert. 40 Year Anniversary for Sonatina40 years! 4000 pianists! 40,000 fingers! Sonatina in Old Bennington

Vermont, an international piano camp for children and adults of all levels of piano ability, will be celebrating its 40th year on Saturday, July 4, with a public concert.

This is not your typical concert – there will be 42 young pianists, between the ages of 7 and 16, performing the Pachelbel Canon in a round on 31 different pianos that are placed in various unusual loca-tions in the Sonatina camp house. The program will also include solo and duet piano performances by Sonatina faculty members, playing Chopin, Barber, Dvorak, Olson and other works.

Twenty years ago, students who were then enrolled in the camp per-formed the Pachelbel Canon and have never forgotten the experience. Rosamond van der Linde, the camp’s founder, created this idea and will be in attendance for the reenactment. Van der Linde, an avid punster, began the program by shooting off a cannon and from the loud down-beat, the students started playing.

Film director Joel Gardner, of Camp Gardner Films, will be on hand to capture more footage for a full-feature documentary film that is being done on the camps, the house, the faculty and staff, and the large number of pianos tucked into every nook and cranny at Sonatina. Camp Gardner Films was recently awarded a Billy Rose Foundation Grant to document the piano stories that many have experienced while in attendance at camp.

The magic of the Sonatina programs has spread worldwide, with piano participants coming from as far as Japan and New Zealand. Sonatina alumni hold reunions or visit with each other throughout the country to renew friendships and support each other’s musical progress long after they’ve come to camp.

Noah Adams, a host on National Public Radio, attended the Autumn Sonata 1994 and his experience is featured in an entire chapter of his book entitled “Piano Lessons: Music, Love and True Adventures.”

In addition, student concerts are held every Thursday, from July 2 – 23 at 6 p.m., at the Bennington Center for the Arts. These concerts are free. Revival of ‘Greenwich: the Musical’

GREENWICH, NY (June 18, 2009) – In the spring of 2004, the town of Greenwich celebrated its 200th birthday with the premiere of an original musical about what it means to inhabit and love a hometown. Now five years later, the village of Greenwich has caught up and is cele-brating its own bicentennial with a revival of “Greenwich: The Musical”. This will come as very good news for throngs of theatre-goers who saw it in 2004 as well as those who couldn’t wrangle a seat during the first, sold-out run of the show.

Featuring a score (with new music) composed by longtime Greenwich singer/songwriter Bob Warren, “Greenwich: The Musical” will be per-formed Thursday, July 9, Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11 (all at 8 p.m.), with a 2:30 p.m. matinee performance on Sunday, July 12. The venue is the Greenwich High School Auditorium (air-conditioned for summer comfort); net proceeds will benefit the GCS Band Fund and local charities.

Virtually the entire creative team and cast are Greenwich residents. The cast of more than 60 ranges in age from 12 to 90-something. The musical is being directed by Chris Tucker, with choreography by Heidi Knecht-Seegers and set design by Mark Anderson and Dave Roberson. Debbie Anderson is the accompanist, and Kathy Roome, Bonnie Warren, Lucy Roberson and Millie Lawrence are co-producers.

Bob Warren’s beautiful songs celebrate Greenwich’s natural wonders (Town That I Love, Battenkill), its history (All Rapped Up, North Star),

its economy (Oh, to be a Farmer, The Ladies of the Street) and its pro-nunciation (Greenwich). Warren has written two new compositions, The Four Exits and Coming Soon, for the musical’s reprise. Altogether, “Greenwich: The Musical”, with vignettes ripped from the pages of local newspapers, immortalizes the big heart of a small town.

Bob Warren is a composer/performer/producer whose writing reflects his love for a variety of musical styles. In addition to songs for his own albums, Bob has written songs for other artists, songs for musical theater, dance and, most recently, songs of a historical nature. His CD releases include: Only The Message Mattered (2009), a song cycle about the life of Susan B. Swedish Midsommar Fest Promises to Be Fun

The Nordic Harmoni Choir is proud to sponsor a Swedish Midsommar Fest at the Landgrove Inn, Landgrove, VT on June 28. From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., come help make the traditional flower wreaths for your hair and decorate the majstång (maypole). The parade (bring any national flags on a pole, if you can), music, dancing around the majstång and singing by Nordic Harmoni begins at 3:30 p.m. A picnic dinner will follow and The Landgrove Inn will provide a cash bar. Please bring a finger food appetizer platter or bite size dessert platter to share, if you can. There will be a silent auction. Midsommar (Midsummer) is the occasion of much festivity in Sweden. This is when the summer days are longest; in the north it is the Midnight Sun. In Sweden it was decided in the 1950’s that Midsommar should always be celebrated on the weekend nearest the 24th of June. Nordic Harmoni is a little late this year but be assured the festive energy is the same. On the morning of Midsommar, Swedes decorate their homes, cars, churches, and dancing pavilions with garlands of flow-ers and leafy branches. Then, in the afternoon, they gather round the majstång (maypole; practically every town and village, however small, has a maypole, a tall cross clad with leaves and flowers). The pole is raised in the mid-afternoon in the center of the village square or park. Once the pole is raised, the dance begins. First in a ring around the pole, then later in the evening, they hold a dance in a barn or on a jetty or outdoor pavilion. We hope you will be able to join us in the festivities.

Masters of MelodyThis evening our program includes the works of Bruck, “Romanze”,

Mendelssohn, “Piano Trio in D Minor” and Brahms, “Piano Quartet” in G minor. The following internationally renowned faculty will be per-forming: Michael Klotz, viola; Tae Kim, piano; Irina Muresanu, violin; Allison Eldredge, cello; and Max Levinson, piano.

This concert will be held at Grace Congregational Church, Court Street, Rutland, on June 27, at 7 p.m. There will be a free will offering.

‘Stuart Little’ in Mt. HollyThe Mt. Holly Community

Association is thrilled that the Weston Playhouse Theatre Company is bring-ing the family production of the E. B. White classic Stuart Little to Mt. Holly. Friday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m., the show will be performed on the Belmont Village Green. Young families and the young-at-heart alike will delight at this imaginative story in which a mild-mannered mouse seeks to survive in a “real people’s world.”

Bring blankets or chairs to enjoy this free one-hour performance. In the event of rain, the performance will be held in the Library and Community Center across from the “Green”. Take Route 103 to the yel-low flashing light and follow the signs to Belmont.

________________________________________________Talent Trial WinnersThe winners of The Sixth Annual Courthouse Talent Trials received

a standing ovation from a full-house at the Fort Salem Theater on Saturday, June 6. Rebecca Butler, winner of the Youth division, sang “I’m Not that Girl.” A very competitive Teen category produced co-winners of Aaron Butler singing, along with accompanying himself, “This is the Moment” and Jack McChesney performing a drum solo. Boys ‘R Us, a barbershop quartet consisting of Bill Hoogeveen, Steve Prehoda, Scott Varley, and Paul Labas, entertained with “Darkness of the Delta” and became the winner of the Adult category. Lynne Kerr, Aaron Coulson, and Shannon Rafferty served as judges.

Winners received performance development scholarships with Jay Kerr and will perform in a Cabaret at the Fort Salem Theater on August 21-22.

Film Series in PawletParallels between Jane Austen’s life and writing are explored in the

British romantic comedy “Becoming Jane”. Is it possible Jane Austen took so much from her life to populate her books with characters that transparently are the inspiration for her writing? After rejecting a pro-posal from the wealthy but dull nephew of a neighbor Jane is inevitably drawn to the impoverished lawyer who her family feels to be a bad match.

This PG film was released in 2007 and runs 120 minutes. It will be aired on Tuesday June 23rd at 7:30. Admission is free and punch and popcorn are available. Feel free to bring a cushion for the folding chairs.
