...beautiful bench...On or about the evening of

August 29th someone stole the beautiful bench we kept at the bottom of our drive. The bench — wrought iron frame with white wooden slats for the seat and back — sat alongside Mad Tom Road, next to the pictur-esque brook that parallels much of the road.

The bench was much more than a simple piece of furniture. Every year anglers sat on the bench as they tied on their favor-ite trout flies. Hikers, walkers and even runners would often sit on it as they stopped to rest. On occasion people picnicked at the base of our driveway and took advantage of the comfort offered by the beautiful bench and the coolness of the babbling brook. Over the years it has become a landmark of sorts along Mad Tom Road and when telling folks of where we live they often responded with “Oh, I know that place.” That’s where the white bench is!”

Should you, in your every-day travels, notice a “new white bench” where none previously existed, please let me know.

I Love, I Love, I Love My Calendar Girl!

Some ladies will do anything to get attention — that is, attention for a good cause. Neighbor to Neighbor is a volunteer group that provides social outings, car rides, and friendly visits to elderly and disabled neighbors to keep them involved in the community. Kate Coss, the Program Director, dared the Steering Committee to participate in a new fundraising idea to gain attention and funds for the program…a pin-up calendar. The idea came from the movie Calendar Girls. The calendar, on sale September 29, features the local “girls” of Neighbor to Neighbor’s Steering Committee baring more than their souls!

Ms. January, Barbara Howland, said “I cannot think of much that is more meaningful than the help we give to our neighbors who are in need of assistance in order to continue living in their own homes. No one wants to go to a nursing home! The fulfillment of seeing what a dif-ference we make in our friends’ lives is so rewarding. Putting together the calendar was great fun and for such a good cause; doesn’t get much better than that!”

“These ladies’ enthusiasm and good humor is inspiring. We hope people will support our efforts and see this as positive, beneficial and fun” says Program Director Kate Coss.

So whether your favorite month is June or December, come and meet the ladies themselves at the kick-off luncheon September 29 at the Manchester Country Club and purchase one of these memorable calendars to support our neighbors. Battenkill Duck RunFor it’s third year Happy Days Playschool will be hosting the Battenkill

River Duck Run: 5K, 12K and 1K Fun Run Sunday, September 26, at the West Arlington Covered Bridge Grange, Vermont, sponsored in part by The Bank of Bennington and CVPS.

This race is held on River Road along the scenic Battenkill River at one of the most beautiful times of the year. The full course is on a low traffic dirt road. The 1K Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m., 5K and 12K race starts at 9 a.m., check in begins at 7:30 a.m.

Cost is $15 ($13 for BKVR members) received before September 12; $18 ($16 BKVR) for same-day registration. The fee is $3 for the Fun Race. Free t-shirts to the first 150 entries. Foremost Interpreter of Tarot Holds A Benefit Workshop for Reverend Claire L. North

In the midst of the current political and economic upheavals that have affected so many lives, people have been expanding their horizons when seeking direction and guidance. Many have discovered insights into their own inner resources through the interpretation of Tarot cards. This ancient system of world symbology can help you under-stand yourself better, tap your inner resources more confidently, and inspire different ways to solve problems.

On Sunday, September 19, from noon to 3 p.m., Rachel Pollack will be conducting the workshop “Tarot: A GPS System for Life” at the Peru Town Center. Considered the foremost interpreter of Tarot in the world today, Pollack has authored many books on the subject, and has also won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for her science fiction novels. She will donate the proceeds from this workshop to help defray the continu-ing medical expenses of our friend, Reverend Claire North, who has chronic Lyme disease and fibromyalgia.

Todd Bailey to Guest on Q & A LiveBob Stannard, host of Q & A LIVE is pleased to announce that his

guest for the September show will be Todd Bailey, Executive Director of the Vermont League of Conservation Voters.

Todd has been the Executive Director of the Vermont League of Conservation Voters (VT LCV) since January 2008, after spending his first two years with VT LCV as the Associate Director. During the 2006 and 2008 election cycles Todd developed and implemented a campaign strategy that lead to several key victories for pro-environment candi-dates.

Todd has been actively involved and committed to working to protect the environment by sitting on the Conservation Commission in Hinesburg, Vermont. He is also a former member of Burlington’s Conservation Board. He came to VT LCV from the Howard Center for Human Services where he served as the Transition Coordinator at Woodside Juvenile Rehabilitation Center.

Todd has also spent time working for several political campaigns as well as his own campaign when he ran for a seat on the Burlington City Council. Todd earned his B.S. in Environmental Science, Natural Resources from Johnson State College in Vermont, is a graduate

of the Environment Leadership Institute, and currently serves as a board member for the Vermont State Employees Credit Union and is a member of the Montpelier Housing Task Force.

Historical Society Meeting

“Joiners Wanted” Important Works of Domestic Architecture and the Carpenter’s Trade in Washington County, ca. 1800 will be the subject of a talk pre-sented by William Krattinger on Thursday, September 16. The Washington County Historical Society invites the public to this free talk at the White Church in Salem at 7 p.m.

The discussion will exam-ine the development of high-style architectural forms in the County at that time; notably the construction of three elaborate frame houses, one each in Salem, Cambridge and White Creek.

Mr. Krattinger is a Historic Preservation Specialist with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Ducks Unlimited Annual BanquetThe Bennington County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding

its annual banquet and auction at the West Mountain Inn in Arlington, Vermont, on September 11 starting at 5:45 p.m. Ducks Unlimited is one of the largest wetlands conservation organization in North America. It has helped preserve over 12 million acres of wetlands, wildlife habitat, and recreation areas.

This year, the local chapter has undertaken a project to build and place wood duck houses in area swamps and marshes.

Running for ShelterTo architects Ramsay Gourd and Greg Boshart, the annual running

of the Maple Leaf Half Marathon on September 11 offers a tremen-dous opportunity. As advocates of, and part of the design team for the Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity, these two community mem-bers have brought a fundraising component to the race.

Last year was Ramsay’s first half marathon, as well as his first attempt to marry the two components. “I was thrilled to see such great commu-nity support for something that I believe so strongly in. And I surprised myself that all of the training paid off and I wasn’t the last one across

the line.” This year Greg is join-ing the effort and hopes that by expanding the network of sup-porters, the combined effort will be fruitful. To quote Andrew Carnegie, “Teamwork ...is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results....”

Pumpkin Festival Space Still Available During difficult economic times people look for places where they

can sell their products, be it jams or jellies, works of art or wooden products that they make in their workshops.

The Townshend Pumpkin Festival has vendor spaces available for the 26th Annual Pumpkin Festival on October 16, on the common in Townshend, Vermont, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For crafters interested in a space or having questions, please contact Harold Kvitek at 802-348-7913.

For the past 26 years the Townshend Business Association has spon-sored the Pumpkin Festival with many activities and a very varied craft fair, with a wide variety of crafts, foods, and works of art. Last year over 60 vendors offered their many different crafts and food items, plus there will also be artists displaying their watercolors, oil paintings and other media.

This is a fun-filled day for the youngsters with a pumpkin decorating contest followed by a Halloween costume parade, a scarecrow decorat-ing contest and free pony rides for kids. Admission and parking are free. The Pumpkin Festival is sponsored by the Townshend Business Association.

Kelly Moore Concert Coming to Equinox Terrace

“Give My Regards to Broadway,” a concert of all-time favorite show tunes, will be presented by Kelly Moore and Music for Mankind at Equinox Terrace on Saturday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception at 7:00 p.m.

Swedish Men’s Chorus Comes to Manchester

Herrsällskapet – ”The Gentlemen´s Society” in Swedish – of Gävle, Sweden, will be the highlight of the upcoming Eastern Division Convention in Manchester, Vermont. The choir, consisting of twelve experienced male singers, was formed in 2005 and in spite of its relative youth, it has already performed a broad repertoire of both sacred and secular classic and contemporary choral music with an emphasis on Scandinavian composers. The majority of the group’s concerts center around their home region of Gästrikland, but the ensemble has also appeared internationally representing Sweden in a Choir Festival in the town of Pecs, Hungary, in 2007. In 2009 the group recorded a CD with Swedish Christmas music.

The conductor’s baton is held by Hakan Sund, well-known conduc-tor, excellent pianist and composer, and lecturer of the Stockholm Music Academy. He teaches piano at the Royal School of Music and has performed as soloist on the international scene, including concerts in New York, London, Paris and Vienna. Mr. Sund is also conductor of the Veterans of Orphei Drängar, Sweden’s famous men’s choir, and of the Stockholm University Chorus. The Herrsällskapet kör, directed by Håkan Sund, will energize and enliven the convention of at least 75 American Union of Swedish Singers from as far away as Chicago. Their leader, Bengt Olerud, lived for a time in Bennington, Vermont, and as a student, sang with the famous Orphei Drångar chorus at Uppsala University.

The Nordic Harmoni chorus from Londonderry, one of the new-est and most energetic choruses of the American Union of Swedish Singers, will host the upcoming Eastern Division Convention in Manchester, Vermont. The Grand Concert, with at least 75 singers joined by the Herrsällskapet Chorus from Sweden, is open to the public at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday September 18 at the Burr and Burton Academy Riley Center for Performing Arts. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

LTS Grows its International Program With the increase in enrollment of international students, Long

Trail has hired Jennifer Jabareen as a full time English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher. While two students are returning to the school from China and Korea, thirteen new students arrived last week. LTS welcomed nine students from China and one each from Germany, Denmark, Chile and Honduras. As part of in-service days, administrators and faculty attended an informational session titled When East Meets West: Understanding the Asian Student: Strategies for Effective Cross Cultural Communication on Campus to discuss cultur-al differences. This program, presented by Suzanne Fox of Intercultural Consulting Services, was also offered to host families and to the new students themselves to provide all constituencies with the necessary tools and perspectives for a successful experience. Coordinator of International Studies, Simone Hughes commented, “This promises to be an exciting year with such a diverse and enthusiastic group of students. They will benefit from their experience in the U.S. as we will undoubtedly learn much from them.” Long Trail School believes that diversity improves the educational experience, and hosting interna-tional students is one way to encourage international-mindedness.

Baked Potatoes Improve Sight and Hearing

When you come and enjoy the stuffed baked potatoes the NorShaft Lions will be serving up on Saturday, September 11 you will not only have a great lunch but you will be helping the Lions support their Sight and Hearing programs.

The NorShaft Lions will be hosting the Plein Air Cafe as part of the North Bennington Plein Air Event. “En Plein Air” is about painting outdoors. The NorShaft Lions Plein Air Cafe will provide refreshments from noon to 3 p.m. at the Park-McCullough Carriage Barn. Come out and enjoy a Baked Potato — the proceeds from the Plein Air Cafe will go towards helping the sight and/or hearing impaired here in our local community.

Lions have restored sight to 7.5 million people through cataract sur-geries, prevented serious vision loss for 30 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions. Lions also take an active role in promoting hearing loss prevention and assisting those who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Hildene FallArts Festival

The 18th Hildene Fall Arts Festival will be held October 1, 2, and 3, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. all three days. This event will be held rain or shine under new heated Camelot tents at Hildene Meadows on River Road, Manchester, Vermont.

For the 18th consecutive year, Craftproducers brings this Vermont favorite back to Manchester. Handcrafted pot-tery, hand blown glass, one of a kind jewelry, colorful hand-woven scarves, striking photog-raphy, original drawings, paint-ings, sculpture, and other upscale collectibles will be showcased by 200 artists and artisans under beautiful, heated Camelot tents at The 18th Annual Hildene Fall Arts Festival.

The hugely successful Vermont Cheese, Beer, and Sausage tent, started in 2008, will return this year. A large selection of Vermont beers, cheeses and sausages will be available to sample and enjoy. Annual English Tea Party and Flea Market Event

Rupert Congregational Church is having their Annual English Tea Party with a Flea Market on Saturday, September 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Tea is presented with scones, cold soups, tea sandwiches, des-serts and of course various teas — all for $6 per person. This event will be in the basement of the church. The flea market will run at the same time in the outside club house (or outdoors if weather is with us). The Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union held its annual “Welcome Back to School” gathering on Tuesday, August 24 during which Jean Ward, the B-RSU’s Director of Curriculum Assessment & Professional Development, announced the 2010 B-RSU Teacher Recognition Awards: Jennifer Turner, Kindergarten teacher at Currier Memorial School (of UD #23) and Kelly Ahlfeld, Librarian and Media Specialist at the Mettawee Community School (of UD #47).

Peru Fair Committee Gearing Up for Big Turnout

Peru’s Village Green and its two hundred yard long Main Street will once again play host to several thousand visitors at its annual Fair. “We’ve really got a terrific group of over 100 local craftspeople and companies exhibiting and selling their wares this year,” noted Fran Tobia, long time committee member. “This is an increase of some 30 additional vendors as we hope to surpass last year’s attendance of over 4,000 people.”

The Peru Fair, now in its 31st year, has become a community event with over 70 town and local area volunteers and high school seniors pitching in to help make it a success to the benefit of the Peru Scholarship Fund which provides scholarship awards to all full time college and trade school students.

“Some people may be away one year, but they are back helping the following year,” said Gail Acosta, the committee member responsible for the annual raffle awarding numerous gifts donated by local business people to the lucky winners. “Over time, there is probably not one of the town’s 400 residents who have not helped out in some way or another. That’s what makes it so special for all of us,” she added.

Back by popular demand, chefs for this year’s pig roast will once again be members of the Peru Volunteer Fire Department, long recognized for their culinary talents. As a special treat for youngsters, a fire truck will be manned and ready to go. Hay rides and pony rides are also avail-able (at a nominal charge), as is Bromley Mountain’s trampoline.

As in past years, come rain or shine, the Fair gates are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The legendary parade will start promptly at 9:45 and end as the assemblage of farm animals, antique cars and children traverses the full length of Main Street, ending at Peru’s 140-year old J.J. Hapgood Store.

The parade, along with hayrides, pony rides, local bands and dance groups gives the Peru Fair a special local flavor — perhaps explaining why it has been named one of Vermont’s top ten attractions by the State’s Chamber of Commerce

All visitors are welcome. Parking and bus transportation is available from the Bromley Mountain parking lot - about a five minute ride away. A donation of $5 to the Peru Education Foundation, which provides funds to every Peru child going on to higher education, is a suggested admissions gift.

Summer Sounds of Music

Sydney Schiffman, BBA class of 2011, presented a solo piano performance of classical and contemporary works on August 26 in the school’s Riley Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert included works from the solo piano repertoire of Mozart, Chopin, Massenet, Albinoni and Debussy, as well as a duo for flute and piano by the contemporary composer Nino Rota.

Manchester Historical Society On Wednesday, September 15 the Manchester Historical Society

will have its annual meeting at the First Congregational Church in Manchester. The first order of business for historical society mem-bers will be the election of new board members and officers at 6:30 p.m. Please note that this is an earlier time than usual in order to accom-modate the dual nature of this meeting. At 7 p.m. the meeting will welcome the public to hear Terry Tyler speak about Vermont firearms. He will talk about his collection, its provenance and how these weapons will be preserved in the future.

The presentation is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served following Tyler’s talk. The evening is sure to be informative and amusing as Tyler is quite an entertaining speaker.

A Great Vermont TraditionOnce again we celebrate the beginning of the fall season with the

return of the Mark Skinner Library Book Sale on September 17-19. Thanks to the generosity of Jason and Karen Walla, owners of the shop-ping center at Ways Lane and Route 7A, the sale will be held in the old Whipple Drug Store building. Their new high-end consignment and antique store, Perfectpiece, will be opening there soon.

Book prices are at a new low; hardback books going for $1 and paper-backs for fifty cents. CDs, videos and audio books will be available. The sale will begin with a preview party and sale on Friday, September 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Early birds will, for a donation of $5, be able to purchase books before the full sale begins on Saturday morning. On Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19, book sale hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Customers using “green” bags will get one dollar off each bagful.

Handbell ConcertKathie Fink, professional solo bell ringer, will present a wonderful

handbell concert, with piano accompaniment by Linda Maloney, at 7 p.m., on Monday, September 27, at the Tinmouth Community Church. Her program called “Legacy” will contain not only her solo ringing but also a history of modern bell ringing, a tribute to her father, Larry Fink, Sr., and the Fink Family Handbell Ringers. The family traveled the country playing handbells before it was well known. There will be TV clips from 1963-65 of the Fink family and historical interviews with Larry Fink and his wife, Wilma. Kathie Fink began ringing hand-bells with her family at nine years old. She is a founding member and ringer with the Sonos Handbell Ensemble in the San Francisco Bay area. Come, laugh at the early television recordings, be moved by Kathie’s elegant solo ringing and refresh your spirit with timeless faith classics. There will be a free-will offering.

Healing Grief Through Writing Support Group Offered

Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice (RAVNAH) will be offering a support group that will utilize the tool of writing as a means of processing grief. Each person grieves uniquely when faced with the death of a loved one, and writing is one way to sort out feel-ings and integrate the changes that loss brings. The Manchester Shambhala Meditation Group is pleased to announce a new class on The Five Buddha Families, starting Tuesday evening, September 7 at 7 p.m.

How do we bridge the gap between our meditative practice and the real and personal experience of our lives? Navigating our life can seem daunting without a map or aerial view. The five buddha families, or principles, are a way of looking at ourselves, others, and situations with clarity and an understanding that everything is workable and contains seeds of wisdom.

The buddha family, or families, associated with a person describes his or her fundamental style, that person’s intrinsic perspective or stance in perceiving the world and working with it. Each family is associated with both a neurotic and an enlightened style. The neurotic expression of any buddha family can be transmuted into its wisdom or enlightened aspect. As well as describing people’s styles, the buddha families are also associated with colors, elements, landscapes, directions, seasons — with any aspect of the phenomenal world.

Through working with the five buddha families, we can learn to relate to and experience wisdom and neuroses properly. They are step-ping stones to compassion and our potential for realization.

In the Vermont Tradition of Barn RaisingThe kickoff for the Artists for Barns project, a month long initiative by sixteen

artists to raise funds for the restoration of the Robinson Barn in Woodstock, gets underway on Saturday, September 18. The participating artists will be on hand to meet supporters. The afternoon and evening festivities include a celebration barbecue and dance at the barn located at the Farmhouse Inn at Robinson Farm on Route 4 at Hillside Avenue in Woodstock, Vermont.

The innovative partnership between the artists, Gallery on the Green and Tory and Barry Milstone, owners of the historic, five-story, turn-of-the-century dairy barn hope to raise funds to begin the $110,000 restoration project. Prints and the original works of art will be available with half of the money after event expenses going to the restoration.

The project has also received the generous support of 21 businesses in the com-munity who are sponsoring the event by donating their time and services for artist housing, lunches, tents and monetary donations. The funds reduce the event’s expenses, enabling more of the money made to go to the barn.

The public is invited to attend and meet the artists, enjoy a barbecue and dance from 3 p.m.–8 p.m. on Saturday, September 18. Music will be provided by a blue-grass group. Barbecue fare includes beef ribs, hot dogs, roast corn, veggie kabobs, chicken kabobs, salads, cookies and brownies, cider and lemonade. There will be a wine and beer cash bar.

Creating Community Bike Path in Manchester

Hey all you bicycle enthusiasts! How would you like to be a part of creating a community bike path in Manchester? As a part of their 43rd anniversary community project, Eastern Mountain Sports will join Northshire Bike Club and Battenkill Bicycle Shop on Tuesday, September 14 as they get down and dirty, clearing a section of the yet unnamed bike path on town property.

Volunteers should meet in the parking lot of the Manchester Gym on Airport Road at 8:30 a.m. rain or shine. Over bagels, generously donated by The Works Café in Manchester, specific trail work strategy will be discussed. Work will conclude at 1 p.m.

Eastern Mountain Sports in Manchester will be closed until 2 p.m. while engaged in this endeavor.

Volunteers should bring work gloves, a water bottle, sturdy closed toed shoes, and most importantly a desire to turn hard work into a much needed recreation area for cyclists! The Platters entertain at SVACThe songs of famed R&B group The Platters, first formed in Los

Angeles in 1953, were a mainstay of the 50s popular music scene, with hits like “Only You,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “The Great Pretender”,”and “Twilight Time.” These timeless ballads, now rendered in classic style by one female and three male voices, will be heard again live on the stage of the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Arkell Pavilion on Saturday October 9, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

Named for the term for LP records of the time, The Platters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2009. They were the first rock and roll group to have a top ten album in America.

Tickets for the concert are $40 (floor side section) and $50 (pre-mium) for SVAC members, $45 (floor side) and $55 (premium) for non-members, and are available in person at the SVAC box office or by calling 362-2522, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday; or at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester Center ($55 tickets only).
