Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia 2012

International Women'sʼ Day Breakfast Parliament House

@On Wednesday 7th March, Mrs. Robson-Garth, Ms. Salinger and eight year 12 students, Georgia O’Grady, Eden Hand, Rosemary Bliss, Grace Ramsden, Katherine Lo Presti, Kimberly Nguyen, Charlotte McInnes and I, Anna Vassiliadis, attended the Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia 2012 International Women’s Day Breakfast at Queen’s Hall, Parliament House.

Our host for the breakfast was The Honorary Andrea Coote MLC and the guest speaker was Miss Vikki Koumis, Managing Director of Aussie Carriers Pty Ltd. Vikki graduated from Melbourne Girls Grammar in 1995 and was School Captain. With an Economics degree from Monash University, she was one of the first students to undertake the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania, Bachelor of Business (Maritime Management) Degree in 1999.

Vikki gained international recognition as a leading shipping entrepreneur breaking the gender barriers in a traditionally male dominated business.

It was a great morning, in the beautifully iconic Parliament House of Victoria, and fantastic opportunity to share some time with other student leaders from a wide range of girl’s schools. We were very impressed by Vickki’s story, full of challenges and successes. On behalf of all student leaders that attended this event, we would like to say a huge thank-you to Mrs Robson-Garth and Mrs Salinger for this wonderful experience.

Oklahoma! For the 2012 Siena/Whitefriars production, we are performing 'Oklahoma', and so far, everything is going wonderfully! Every Monday and Tuesday the cast members and the orchestra gather with the directors, choreographers, musical directors and some of the teachers from both schools to rehearse. We have been rehearsing since Term 4, 2011, and the progress we have made since the first rehearsal is outstanding.

With less than two weeks until the curtain goes up on opening night, everybody who is involved is extremely nervous, but can't wait to show all their family and friends what they have been working so passionately on for the past two terms.

Tickets are already on sale via the Whitehorse Centre theatre website (www.whitehorsecentre.com.au/May-Listing.html) for the four performances on the 3rd, 4th and 5th (evening and matinée shows) of May.

Hope to see you all there!

Maddie Psaila, Year 12

CASSIA GIRLS!Be on the look out for Fiesta details

coming up!! We want as many people involved as possible :) thanks!

reflection on my last swimming carnival everKatherine Lo PrestiFriday  March  16th  saw  the  Siena  College  community  rock  up  to  Boroondara  Sports  Complex  for  an  exciting  event  –  the  annual  inter-‐house  swimming  carnival!  I  can  vouch  for  the  year  12s  as  being  some  of  the  most  excited  people  there  as  we  celebrated  in  style  –  our  last  swimming  carnival.  The  weather  threatened  to  ruin  our  plans  but  luckily  heavy  rain  held  off  for  most  of  the  day.

The  year  12s  dressed  up  in  our  various  animal  costumes  for  our  Noah’s  Ark  theme.  There  were  some  amazing  costumes  on  the  day  and  nothing  was  funnier  than  watching  some  of  the  year  12s  attempting  swimming  in  such  outfits!

Being  my  last  year  –  I  attempted  to  swim  in  the  50m  pool.  I  didn’t  come  first  but  I  actually  made  the  distance!!  This  was  a  fair  effort  as  swimming  certainly  is  not  my  forte!  What  made  my  day  even  more  enjoyable  was  entering  in  the  Iron  Woman  event.  This  was  a  challenge  but  I  actually  was  able  to  run  and  swim  most  of  the  event.  I  mustered  up  some  house  points  for  Dianella  whilst  having  enormous  amounts  of  fun.

Despite  how  tired  I  felt  by  the  end  of  the  day,  I  can  happily  conclude  the  2012  swimming  carnival  to  be  one  of  the  most  memorable  events  of  my  year  12  so  far!

House  Aths  earlier  this  term  was  a  huge  success  with  almost  every  lane  and  field  event  filled  by  a  Siena  girl  from  each  house.

Whether  it  was  sprin=ng,  jumping,  hopping  or  throwing,  every  girl  put  their  best  efforts  into  their  events  to  earn  points  for  their  house.  For  the  first  =me  there  was  a  novelty  category  dedicated  solely  to  the  year  12’s  including  egg  and  spoon  races,  piggy  back  races,  wheel  barrow  races  and  loads  more.

Most  of  the  year  12  girls  got  involved  in  this  fun  event  and  were  rewarded  with  an  easter  egg  for  their  efforts!  Luckily  the  rain  held  off  for  the  long  awaited  year  12  closing  ceremony  which  was  an  entertaining  highlight  of  the  day.  This  involved  every  member  of  each  house  running  fran=cally  in  a  massive  circle  (or  more  like  a  mosh  pit)  chan=ng  our  favourite  Siena  song,  S.I.E.N.A!!!  The  day  was  filled  with  excitement  and  even  though  we  are  sad  that  it’s  our  last  one,  we  will  remember  the  fun  =mes  long  aPer  we  finish  school  at  Siena  College.

proverb of the month

“It’s raining cats and dogs!”

Its meaning...

Back in the day when houses used to have thatched roofs, piled high with no wood underneath, the only place that the animals could get warm was in the nice thick straw of the roof.

So all the cats, dogs and other smaller animals such as mice and creepy crawlies lived in the roof.

When it rained, the straw would become slippery and the animals would slip and fall off the roof, giving the appearance to those who could afford the luxury of windows to look out of, and see what seemed as though it was raining cats and dogs.

enviroFastFacts

Each year, one person uses wood and paper products

equivalent to a 100 foot tree 18 inches in diameter

Over  5,000  products  are  made  from  trees

ONE  ACRE  of  TREES  REMOVES  up  to  2.6  TONNES  of  carbon  dioxide  from  the

air  each  year.

An  acre  of  trees  produces  the  same  amount  of  oxygen  consumed  by  18  people  in  a

year.

Ever since Australia’s first settlement 92% of the country’s old growth forest has been DESTROYED

or MODIFIED

Much of this is a result of destruction by human activities such as logging, agriculture, and urban

growth

There are over 23,000 different kinds of trees in the world

enviroSolutionsStop cutting down

trees – remember to plant trees!!

Make sure any paper you buy (toilet rolls, writing paper) comes

from recycled sources

Recycle in a smart way – throw paper and

cardboard in a bag separately from cans,

glass and plastics

Present  idea?  Give  a  small  tree.  Small

trees  make  beautiful  gifts  –  just  wrap  the

pot  in  nice  gift  paper.

Pay  with  credit  cards  or  debit  cards  while  shopping,  rather  than  paying  with  paper

notes

Ask  yourself:Do  I  need  to  print  this?

Try  to  use  both  sides  of  your  papers
