CDSB Scholarship Guidelines

The Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) supports its doctoral students by awarding scholarships. In most cases these are scholarships from the DFG (GermanResearch Foundation) or the LGFG (State Sponsorship Graduate Program).

In accordance with DFG-grants regulations from July 02 2012, („Guidelines for Institutions

of Excellence“ (DFG-Form ExIn10)), the DFG-Form 2.22a (Attachment to the Guidelines for

Research Training Groups) as well as the National Law for the Promotion of Graduates

(LGFG), the Center for Doctoral Studies in Business at the University of Mannheim (CDSB)

has established the following guidelines on XXX in order to regulate the allocation of these

scholarships:* 

§ 1 Purpose of scholarshipsThe purpose of awarding scholarships is the promotion and support of talented

doctoral students who have demonstrated or are expected to demonstrate exceptional

 performance in their doctoral studies at the CDSB.

§ 2 Allocation / Allocation Committee

The awarding of a scholarship is based on the professional evaluation statement of theAdmissions and Assessment Committee of the CDSB (APK).

§ 3 Eligibility

(1) Eligible are those students, who have officially been accepted as doctoral studentsat the CDSB by the Admissions and Assessment Committee.

(2) Doctoral candidates within the Master “Business Research” Program can apply for

a “Qualification Scholarship” by submitting a written application according to §

5(6).

(3) Students are obliged to inform the Center Manager immediately should they

receive any other grants/scholarships from public and/or private sources.

§ 4 Scope of support

(1) The full amount of the scholarship for doctoral students amounts to 1200  ! 

monthly, including the basic amount and a flat rate for material costs.

(2) The full amount of the “Qualification Scholarship” amounts to 800  ! per month

(basic amount).(3) Doctoral students with children who receive a scholarship can receive additional

Child Benefits. For the first child under the age of 18, students may be eligible to

receive an additional 400  ! per month upon presenting the child’s birth certificate.

For every additional child, students are eligible to receive an additional 100  ! per

month. Children of a life partner can also be taken into consideration, given

evidence is provided clearly showing that the children have lived within the same

household as the scholarship holder before he received the scholarship. Benefits

according to the Bundeselterngeld- und Elternzeitgesetz (BEEG, Legislation of

Parental Allowance and Parental Leave) are taken into account and deductedaccordingly from the basic scholarship amount.

(4) The scholarship cannot be made conditional on or issued as compensation for

services provided for the donor at any time.

(5) There is no legal claim to receive a scholarship or its benefits. The scholarship is

not an employment contract nor does it represent an employer-employee

relationship with the State of Baden-Württemberg or the University of Mannheim.

(6) Regulations for the admissibility of activities outside of the University and any

supplementary income that may be deducted from the scholarship can be found inthe current version of § 4 of the Statutes of the University of Mannheim for the

implementation of the Landesgraduiertengesetz (National Law for the Promotion

of Graduates) from November 08, 2010.

§ 5 Application procedures, Approval and Funding Period

(1) The maximum permissible length of the first/initial funding period at the

 beginning of a student’s doctoral studies is 14 months.

(2) Doctoral students do not need to submit a separate application for the initial

funding period. All funding decisions are made by the Admissions and

Assessment Committee ex officio based on the students’ application

documents to the program with the consent of the Academic Director of the

CDSB.(3) The scholarship can be extended for up to an additional 10 months past the

initial funding period if the student demonstrates a timely progress within his

doctoral studies. Students should submit an application to the CDSB Center

Manager until August 31st of the respective year to be considered for a

scholarship extension.

(4) In individual and exceptional cases, scholarships can be extended by an

additional and final 12 months after a funding period of 24 months. Students

should submit an application to the CDSB Center Manager until June 30th

 of

the respective year to be considered for this scholarship extension.

(5) A “Qualification Scholarship” can be awarded for a maximum of 12 months.

(6) In order to receive a “Qualification Scholarship”, officially admitted students

within the Master “Business Research” Program of the CDSB should submit a

written application to the CDSB Center Manager. The application may besubmitted electronically. The deadline for the application is June 30 th of the

respective year to be considered for a “Qualification Scholarship”.

(7) The Admissions and Assessment Committee decides on all scholarship

applications, their duration and extensions at their discretionary authority.

However, all funding decisions are conditional and subject to the availability of

funds. The consent of the Academic Director of the CDSB is required for allfinal funding decisions.

(8) The funding period for all doctoral scholarships cannot exceed a maximum of

36 months. Funding ends at the end of the month in which the last oral exam

and the announcement of the overall result of studies takes place, but no laterthan at the end of the maximum funding period.

§ 6 Extension of funding period

(1) In special circumstances of personal hardship (pregnancy, child care,

disability/care for relatives, illnesses of a prolonged duration of more than 6

weeks), an extension of the scholarship beyond the maximum funding period, a

 part-time scholarship, or an interruption of funding can be considered. In this

respect, the respective regulations of the DFG and/or the LGFG are applicable.A written application has to be submitted to the Center Manager immediately

after knowledge of the reason for an extension. Evidence for the reason ofextension should be included as attachment(s) to the application.

(2) Scholarships are not being paid out during the period of leave of absence of the

doctoral studies. The appropriation period of the scholarship can be adjusted bythe CDSB upon special notice by the student once they have resumed theirstudies directly following their leave of absence. The duration of the leave of

absence does not count towards the maximum funding period.
