Introduction

Verbs are words which denote the action, State,

Possession of the subject.

SLIDE 7

Example : I teach English, The water is boiling

There are different types of verbs: Finite or non-finite,

Auxiliary verbs, Transitive and intransitive Verbs.

Finite Verb : A finite Verb can take a subject

and is limited by the number and persons of subject.

The finites are those parts of Verb, other than non

finites.

Example : Am, is, are, was, were, loves, loved,

will love

Non-finite Verb : A non-finite verb can’t take a

subject. It expresses a verbal notion without predicting

it if any subject.

Example : To be, To love, To have been, To have

loved, being, loving, Been, loved, Having been etc.

Transitive Verb ; Verb which takes a direct

object.

A transitive verb may have two objects Direct

and indirect objects.

The direct object can be found by a

Example : Father gave me a pen ; Direct object a pen

Indirect object can be found by asking the

questions ‘To whom ?’ ‘For whom ?’ The indirect must be

place before the direct object.

Intransitive Verb: Verb which can’t take a direct object.

Example : He is sleeping, He walks slowly.

Auxiliary Verbs : It is applied to those verbs

that are used in the formulation of tenses.
