Active and passive verbsThis is another way in which verbscan change.They can be in the active or thepassive voice.Many verbs can be used in bothforms. 4. Sentences containing active verbs areclear and easy to understand.In these sentences the verb is active.The dog bit the man.The family watched CoronationStreet.David telephoned Emily.In these sentences the subject of thesentence performs an action. 5. The dog bit the man.In this sentence the dog is the subject.The sentence is about him.The verb is bit.The man is the person who has theaction done to him. This is called theobject of the sentence. 6. The man was bitten by the dog.This sentence is in the passive voice.The person who has the action doneto him becomes the subject.He does not do the action (Manbites dog would be rather unusual).The action is done to him. 7. Clues to help you spot a passiveverb.Look for the words by or by the in thesentence.Here are some more passive sentences.Coronation Street was watched by thefamily.Emily was phoned by David.The computer was repaired by theengineer. 8. To change sentences frompassive to activeThe computer wasrepaired by theengineer.The engineer repairedthe computer.Look for the verbFind the person or thing doing the action (the wordby gives you a clue)Make that person or thing the subject of thesentence.Describe what he or she does.Finish the sentence by saying who or what they do itto. 9. Passive to ActiveThe disco wasorganised bythe parents.The parentsorganised thedisco.The goldfish waseaten by thecat.The cat ate thegoldfish.Active sentences are usuallyshorter and easier tounderstand. 10. To change sentences from active topassiveGoldilocks ate theporridge.The porridge was eaten byGoldilocks.Find the verb.Find the person or thing having the action doneto it.Make that person or thing the subject of yoursentence.Change the verb so that the subject is having theaction done to it.Use by or by the to finish the sentence. 11.
