Change is inevitable and when performed with purpose, can be a successful decision. Such is the case with the destination venue Shogun Legacy in Toms River -- a unique dining experience in an elegant setting featuring a menu of contemporary Asian and

traditional sushi and sashimi dishes. Those who have dined here before but have not been to the restaurant

for a while will be pleasantly surprised by the impressive changes that were part of a major renovation project two years ago. Thisfinediningrestaurant sits on the site of the Bey Lea Golf Course in Toms River, and was formerly known as Shogun Bey Lea, according to

Richard Filosa, manager. In its previous incarnation, the restaurant served a full spectrum of Asian cuisine. Owner Patrick Chu closed the restaurant about two years ago to undergo extensive renovations of the building, change the menu and also to overhaul the image of the restaurant. This re-imagination took about three months. “We pulled up the floors andrenovatedthewholebuildingfromfloortoceiling,”Filosarecalls. He describes the new Shogun Legacy as representing the evolution of the restaurant from a hibachi steak house and sushi bar to a finediningestablishmentofferingacomprehensiveselectionofAsianandThaientreesto complement the selection of traditional sushi and sashimi dishes previouslyoffered. One door opened as others closed for musicians Thomas Vincent and Jon Lewis. They starting playing together soon after their previous bands had

broken up and quickly discovered how good a combination they were just as a duo.

This will be the second full summer of playing together for the duo of Lewis and Vincent who make up A Day In The Life. Although they’ve been around for just two years, they are quickly gaining a following and have a busy summer ahead of them playing at popular summer spots all along the Shore.

Vincent, from Little Falls, is the lead singer and guitarist in this two-piece

acoustic alternative rock group. Lewis, who hails from Toms River, captures audiences’ intrigue as he plays the cajón, a Peruvian percussion instrument similar to a bongo drum. It is a hollow box designed to replicate the bass and snares of a drum set; Lewis

quickly taught himself to play it before joining Vincent.

With just a guitar and the cajón, A Day In The Life, named for a Beatles song, sounds like a full rock group and can cover a range from classic through ‘90s alternative and current. “People are pretty shocked that there are only two of us when they hear us,” notes Lewis, who is also starting to take the reins a bit more with the vocals.

They became increasingly popular as last summer went on, ending the season on a strong note. Their late run of shows included a memorable night on Vincent’s birthday in August at Latitudes on the River in Forked River. That in turn led to a higher demand for them this year. “Last summer we started playing a few spots down the shore. And from playing out so much and word-of-mouth, a lot people took a

liking to us and it really took off this summer,” explains Vincent.

There will be plenty of opportunities to see A Day In The Life this summer as they have a steady schedule. They will appear nearly every Thursday, and some Saturdays, at the Water’s Edge in Berkeley Township as well as every Friday for happy hour at Jenkinson’s in Point Pleasant. You can also catch them at The Crab’s Claw in Lavallette, Taste in Red Bank or Shogun in Toms River. If you want to check them out they also perform at the Village Whiskey located at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City once a month on Thursday.

Even with their steady schedule, they’re willing to play anywhere. “We try different places randomly,” says Lewis. “We do a lot of private parties too; we’re actually booked for a wedding. It’s pretty cool; again this is only our second full summer playing together as a duo.”

Both have had success in other ventures before coming together to create A Day In The Life. Both have played in venues established in the local scene such as the House of Blues, Stone Pony and Starland Ballroom, but have played bigger stages as well. Lewis has opened for bands like The Wailers and Badfish, a Sublime cover band, and Vincent played Bamboozle in 2007 with his previous group.

It can be tough playing such a busy schedule. Last summer Vincent and Lewis twice played eight shows in ten nights and have a similarly hectic schedule this year, so it’s important for

them to be mentally and physically prepared to play. “I try not to talk in between shows as much. Drink a lot of water and lay off alcohol during shows and in between shows,” relates Vincent. “I just try to stay healthy.”

Both grew up in the ‘90s and were huge fans groups such as Nirvana, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dave Matthews Band, and that’s what you can expect to hear when these two hit the stage. Though alternative is their forte, they also play the classics such as Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival and, of course, The Beatles, though not as much as you may think. “We named the band after a Beatles song and the funny thing is we only play about three Beatles songs,” Lewis laughs.

Bartender Anastasia Braucht is passionate about at least two things in her life -- her job as bartender at River Rock in Brick, and doing her best to ensure that restaurant workers have fair wages and decent working conditions.

In addition to tending bar at the River Rock, Braucht also works at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park as events bartender, helping out with summer stage shows.

Braucht says she loves her job, and those she works for. Most important, she relates that she believes she is fortunate to earn decent wages and have a great work environment. This isn’t the case for all restaurant workers, however, according to Braucht, who also volunteers with Restaurant Opportunities Careers (ROC United) to ensure that others will have what she has -- fair wages and decent working conditions. ROC

United’s mission is to improve wages and working conditions for the nation’s 10 million restaurant workers.

her job at the organization is to let others in the industry know about how it can help them. “There

are cases where the restaurant industry can be unfair and difficult to work in.” she comments. “ROC helps restaurant workers with issues such as wages, working conditions and sexual harassment.”

Braucht and a group of others recently spoke at hearings in Trenton for a bill being considered that will raise the minimum wage for tips workers. That wage currently stands at a paltry $2.13 -- and this figure hasn’t been raised in over 20 years.

She also spoke at a Congressional Briefing in Washington DC to raise the minimum wage for taxed employees. “I believe in the organization and the work they do,” she asserts, adding she is glad to be a part of the effort.

This veteran bartender says she has worked in the restaurant industry all her life with the exception of a stint at an office job. “I tried an office job because I liked the idea of benefits and a 401K,” she says. “I found out it just wasn’t for me,” she said. “I was also working once a week bartending at that time and realized I was much happier doing that. I made the switch to full-time bartending and never went back.”

Wining Around New JerseyCalifornia and its fabled Napa Valley used to

be the sole location when people identified American wine-production regions. New Jersey, however, is gaining tremendous ground. In fact, we are the seventh largest

wine producing state in the US, producing approximately 1.5 million gallons of wine annually, a number that is increasing. Currently, there are more than 45 licensed wineries in the Garden State, and more set to come online.

Lynn Coffin of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture writes on its website, “This is really an exciting time in New Jersey’s wine industry. The number of farm wineries continues to increase with those wineries developing old and new varieties that work well in the state. Many of these wines are being recognized nationally and internationally for their quality and flavor, winning awards and prestigious wine competitions.”

Tom Cosentino, spokesperson for the Garden State Wine Growers Association, says that New Jersey Vineyards are the fastest-growing segment of the state’s agriculture business. He told Kieht Loria of farmflavor.com, “There have been a lot of New Jersey wines succeeding in national and international competitions, winning medals and gaining notoriety, and it is fast becoming an industry people are learning about here.”

Before 1981 there were very few wineries in the state, but now, wineries and tasting rooms are blooming throughout New Jersey, and quite a few farmers are switching from traditional crops to grapes, or are adding grapes. Much of this has to do with the passage in 2012 of a new law allowed New Jersey wineries to ship wine outside state lines and even internationally.

According to Coffin, New Jersey has three distinctive regions for grape growing; each is an official American Viticultural Area (AVA): Central Delaware Valley AVA: designated in 1984, located in Central NJ and shared with Southeastern PA along the Delaware River, just north of Philadelphia; Warren Hills AVA: designated in 1988, located entirely in Warren County, in the northwest of the state; and Outer Coastal Plain AVA: designated in 2007, in all of Cumberland, Cape May, Atlantic and Ocean Counties. She explains: “One of the most exciting aspects of

the industry is the ability to successfully grow many varieties of grapes because of the great conditions. There are more than 40 varieties now growing in the state, from Pinot Noir and Riesling in the North, to some of the more popular Italian varieties such as Sangiovese and Barbera in the South. We have everything from vinifera vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, to French American Hybrids to Native American vines. We also have a Spanish winery that has just started planting in Lower Township, Cape May County. They’ll have Spanish varieties including Albernino and Tempernio. In addition, you can find many excellent fruit wines including Apple, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cranberry, Cherry, Plum, Raspberry and Strawberry; as well as blush wines, Ports, Ice wines, Spice wines, Sangria’s and several Sparkling wines.”

And yet, there is longstanding wine heritage in New Jersey -- the drinkable gift of the great fermented grape has roots here; according to Loria, in the 1700s, London’s Royal Society of the Arts officially recognized two Garden State vintners for their quality wines.

And quality is the key word. Despite still having to battle against a stereotypical reputation of refinery stench and all things unclean, several New Jersey wines actually won accolades from one of the world’s most prestigious wine judging events in 2012, Judgment of Princeton, organized by the American Association of Wine Economists. According to reporter Kate Zernike, who stated in her New York Times article, the event was “ modeled” on the Judgment of Paris in 1976, when the upstart Californians edged out the establishment French in a blind taste test. This time a New Jersey red came in third out of 10, following only a Mouton-Rothschild and a Haut-Brion. Among 10 whites, a New Jersey wine produced an hour’s drive from Manhattan came in second, with two other Jersey wines straight behind it. John Pizzi I recently had the

opportunity to speak with a veteran comic/ve n t r i l o q u i s t

John Pizzi. John is someone nearly all of us have seen at one

time or another and was, for me, a timely choice with the recent passing of Otto Petersen, another contemporary ventriloquist.

Venues NJ: First, John I want to say I’m a big fan. From my very first Paul Winchell starter kit in 1962 I’ve always been into ventriloquism. You are a “well rounded” comic in that you entertain in a variety of ways; straight stand-up, magic and ventriloquism. How did you get into this gig, aside, I assume, from being class clown?

John Pizzi: Ironically, I was not a class clown or even funny as a child. I was a shy, quiet young boy who was bitten by the magic bug by around age seven. Once I experienced magic for the first time, I was blown away by something that breaks the laws of the universe. I learned stage magic, close up performing, sleight of hand, illusions and cabaret performing. Later in life I would delve into the study of comedy and how it was to enhance my earlier skills. Comedy is a

lifetime of work in itself. And still to this day I am a student of it all. In the magic business there was always a dummy or puppet in the corner of the magic shop or inside the catalog of tricks. This also intrigued me and I dabbled with ventriloquism. Little did I know then, I would become one and make a living performing with dummies as well as being a comedian and writing jokes. It’s almost like a life found me. I actually consider my life as a comedian-magician-ventriloquist to be a gift and never forget where I came from or abuse the privilege that has been leased to me temporarily while here on this planet.

VNJ: You’re a Staten Island guy. How do you account for so many of our comedians, really since vaudeville, coming from the New York area?

JP: After traveling the country in the 90s performing in comedy clubs, I realized how unique New York was to the rest of the country. People would ask me -- how did you get so funny? I would respond, “Growing up in New York.” The streets of New York make you sharp. I remember hanging out with friends and whoever had the best putdown line was the king. Cleverness was respected sometimes more than muscle.

VNJ: How about your family growing up. What’d they think about your decision to make this a career?

JP: I was raised by my mother who was a piano teacher and pretty artsy person herself. My grandparents on her side were artists and musicians. So I guess there was some out of the box thinking instilled in me from them.

They were very encouraging of my hobbies. Mom would actually drive me to late night talent and “The Gong Show” on school days. It was really invaluable for me and I also realize how important this was in creating my ability

to not be frightened of performing.

V-NJ: I like to ask everyone about their IMDB page and I see you have a couple of credits including one new one with William Forsythe. Any more coming up?

JP: Yes, I recently was in “Laugh Killer Laugh” with Artie Lang and William Forsythe. It should be out very soon. I do have a few other projects that I am working on.

V-NJ: You’ve really performed everywhere. Have you ever found yourself more nervous than normal over anyone famous you knew was in the audience?

JP: I have opened for a celebrity in front of 4000 people and earlier in the day had done a kid’s birthday party. I’ve also done a family show and that night opened for strippers.As far as nerves, not really. Nervousness in performance comes from being unprepared. If you are confident with your material there is no nervousness.

I have done shows for lots of famous people. One time I had done a roast and all “The Sopranos” were there. I really ripped up James Gandolfini. He looked angry and was going back and forth with my dummy and losing the verbal battle. At the end of the show I thought it was going to be problematic and he came over to “me” and said he wanted to take a picture. He told me how funny I was and was the nicest actor I ever met.

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

O N B R O A D W A YWatching the new revival of “Les Misérables,” it occurred to me that this beloved stage adaptation

of Victor Hugo’s novel may have helped pave the way for the pop singing contests that have proliferated across the globe in this century. Much like those televised competitions — “American Idol” and “The Voice” being the national brand leaders — “Les Misérables” presents audiences with a stage full of singers who, one by one, have a chance to step into the spotlight and astonish us with the mighty heft and range of their voices. Theatergoers at the performance cheered as if they were indeed at a sing-off featuring fresh-faced young performers singing pop favorites with all the dazzling flourishes they could muster. As pretty much everyone by now knows, the musical dramatizes the elaborate tale of an unfortunate French guy who stole a loaf of bread and lived to regret it. The production that opened at the Imperial Theater on March 23rd, returning the show to Broadway to capitalize on the popularity of the recent movie version, gives it an update of sorts.

A Review

“Les Misérables” does not provide a director much leeway to tinker with its firmly typed good-guy bad-guy characters and its heaving, melodramatic plot. Casting and matters of crowd control are of paramount importance. Scenic tweaking aside, and an orchestra shrunk to 20 from 27, this “Les Miz” will offend none of the musical’s fans with any directorial innovations, and will give them a chance to assess how a new generation of performers meets the challenges of the score. The big winners, happily, were the actors playing the dominating roles of hero and villain: Mr. Karimloo as the bread stealer, single father, long-sufferer and future saint; and Will Swenson as Javert, dogged pursuer of said hero and general scourge to all noble causes and pure hearts. Making his Broadway debut, Mr. Karimloo, an Iranian-born Canadian performer, sets a high standard in the prologue, performing Valjean’s angry soliloquy with fiery intensity and full-throttled vocalism that gradually shades into more nuanced coloring as Valjean puts behind him the grim shadows of his

imprisonment and forges a new life. The highlight of his performance, and perhaps the production as a whole, is Mr. Karimloo’s beautifully restrained but richly felt rendition of “Bring Him Home,” one of the score’s less thundering songs, in which Valjean sends up a prayer for Marius, who has fallen at the barricades after falling for Cosette (Samantha Hill), whom Valjean has raised after her mother’s death. Mr. Swenson makes for an unusually dreamboaty Javert. He musters his inner sinister to snarl and glower with gusto, and his singing has both power and precision. Javert has his own climactic soliloquy mirroring Valjean’s opening one, in which he is forced to question his life’s purpose, since Valjean’s good seems to be triumphing so annoyingly over his evil. Eyes still glowing with thirst for vengeance, Mr. Swenson’s Javert met his end with soul shaken, but vocal resources firmly intact. The rest of the cast doesn’t always meet the same high standards, although all are

creditable performers within the limits of their roles. But we mustn’t forget to acknowledge the merry antics of the conniving Thenardiers, the innkeepers from whom Valjean rescues the abused young Cosette. This grasping duo infuses the mostly self-serious musical with some appealing comic vulgarity in their number “Master of the House.” The diminutive Cliff Saunders capers around like a rabid monkey as he fleeces his customers with irrepressible high spirits, while Keala Settle grimaces and grouses, shooting daggers at her husband as if deciding whether to endure him or put him through the handy meat grinder, the better to keep down the price of sausage.This boisterous celebration of iniquity and greed has always been one of my favorite moments in the show. Here as ever, it’s the dramatic equivalent of a double espresso, providing the necessary jolt of caffeine to keep us alert for all the singing and all the suffering to come.

PREVENTION FIRST OFFERS TRAINING FOR INTERVENTION PROCEDURES (TIPS)

A FREE RESPONSIBLE BARTENDER TRAINING Program

On Monday, May 5, 10am to 3pm at Monmouth University, Prevention First will hold a free training for owners, managers and employees of Monmouth County businesses that hold liquor licenses (restaurants, hotels, bars, nightclubs, etc.). Attendees will

be taking a leading role in the effort to prevent alcohol misuse by attending this training which will assist local servers and vendors in preventing illegal sales of alcohol to underage youth. Guests can expect to learn more about staying on top of the latest trends in false identification, developing innovative strategies to prevent selling alcohol to underage customers, understanding the legal and social consequences of serving underage youth and helping to protect their community and becoming a part of the Hero Campaign.
