A fireplace is ideal for heating during winter months. It helps us to save on electricity bills which seem to soar during winter months. It is also convenient if we know how to use it keeping safety standards in mind. Many people ignore the fact that fore hazards are easily caused by fire places. We often do not pay attention to this portion of the house. We use it during the winters and tend to ignore it during the rest of the months. An ideal fireplace is the one that complies with standard safety measures.

Outlets for the fire placeMost fire places have a chimney as an outlet. If someone is suing a fire place for heating you can easily tell by looking at their chimney. However too much heat that is being exhumed by the chimney can sometimes damage the roof and even set it on fire. Modern buildings typically install a vent directly above the fire place. This becomes a secondary option for the smoke to escape. The amount of heat that is being thrown out by the chimney is also reduced. Fire places that do not have proper ventilation tend to smoke and heat up the house as well. Excessive heat inside the house is not safe either. There are several electrical appliances that can catch fire due to excessive heat.

Why have vents above fire place?

Traditional fire places that were built a few decades ago typically use the indoor air for combustion. The fire place uses the available air inside the home to burn the fire wood. These fireplaces are not that efficient because it allows the heated air to escape out of the homes through the flue. The flue is a pipe that causes the air to be let out through the chimney. So consider having a vent built somewhere close to the fire place. A good architect can help you with it. Start preparing to use the fire place much before winter starts.

Advantages of direct vents above fire place

There are many advantages of having direct vents above the fire place. They are much more efficient and safer than traditional fire places to start with. The vent uses the outdoor for combustion and burning of wood. The air is pulled into the fire place through the vent pipes and the pipes will exhaust the fumes. When you use a direct vent system you need not use a flue to expel the air out. Flue is actually a nuisance to maintain. It needs to be thoroughly cleaned every season or else it ends up being a fire hazard if it is clogged.

Safety and efficiency of vents

The direct vents are much a safer option because they eradicate the need for a flue which is a potential fire hazard. The vent pipe can be easily installed through the wall and be secured for fire hazards. Pipes that are inside the fall do not have a medium to catch fire even if they are heated up. Direct vent pipes are capable to burn natural gas like kerosene or propane. It also seals of the air outlets keeping the warm air inside the house for a longer period of time. Moreover they are versatile in design and give a neat look to your living room.
