Air-admittance valves can be used in waste water pipes following the acknowledged rules of technology to reduce negative pressure. In line with the harmonisation of waste water standards at European and national level, the installation recommendations are contained in DIN EN 12056-2 and DIN 1986-100.Air-admittance valves can also be installed in deviation from the recommendations if when installing waste water systems certain

structural requirements need to be taken into consideration. These can arise as a result of the German Heat Insulation Ordinance, for building conservation reasons or because of structural requirements. Deviations from the standard are also possible in the case of contractually regulated installation.Air-admittance valves must meet the require-ments of DIN EN 12380 and be labelled with the relevant type class.

ventilair air-admittance valves are classified in the highest type classification Class A I and can be used for installation below the backflow level in a temperature range from -20°C to +60°C. This classification is documented by the attached CE mark.

The logo “Type-tested and moni-tored” by LGA QualiTest GmbH (State Trade Office of Bavaria) proves third-party control and compliance with DIN EN 12380.

The new generation of ventilair air-admittance valves gives you the required level of safety, with just three models to cover all eventualities.

Classification of air-admittance valves according to DIN EN 12380

Class A I:

Installation below backflow level is pos-sible, temperature range: -20°C to +60°C

Class A II:Installation below backflow level is pos-sible, temperature range: 0°C to +60°C

Class A III:Installation below backflow level is pos-sible, temperature range: 0°C to +20°C

Class B I:Installation only above backflow level,temperature range: -20°C to +60°C

Class B II:Installation only above backflow level,temperature range: 0°C to +60°C

Class B III:Installation only above backflow level,temperature range: 0°C to +20°C

The description ventilair air-admittance valve, Class A I, means:• Tested by a third party, according to

DIN EN 12380 and classified in Class A I• Annual sample test with third-party

supervision by LGA QualiTest GmbH

ExplanationAir-admittance valves are used in order to create a balance of pressure in gravity drainage systems.

• Absolutely vertical installation is essential

• Slanting or horizontal air-admittance valves will not function

• Accessibility must be ensured, for main-tenance purposes

Installation description

Class A means:• Suitable for installation below the back-

flow level (= the highest level that the water can reach in a drainage system). The air-admittance valve must be tested at 30 Pa, 500 Pa and 10,000 Pa.

Class I means:• Suitable for a temperature range of

between -20°C and +60°C

The description tested according to DIN EN 12380, Class A II, means:• The air-admittance valve is subject to

self-testing according to the require-ments of DIN EN 12380

Class A means:• Suitable for installation below the back-

flow level

Class II means:• Suitable for a temperature range of bet-

ween 0°C and +60°C

• In case of installation in concealed loca-tions, a sufficient air supply must be available

• If fitted to a horizontal waste pipe, the air-admittance valve must be installed at least one pipe-thickness vertically above the level of the pipe

• Outdoor installation is not permissible (except for ventilair for outdoor use, see page 8)

Installation possibilities for air-admit-tance valves in downcomer pipes • In detached and semi-detached houses

or in comparable household waste water usage situations

• Prerequisite is that at least one down-comer pipe with the shortest flow distance to the collecting drain at roof level is two-way vented

Installation possibilities for air-admit-tance valves in multi-storey pipes• As indirect secondary ventilation,

replaces all recirculation ventilation systems

• At the end point of multiple connection pipes

• In single connection pipes

ventilair® nominal diameters

The upper part of the polystyrene packaging serves as frost protection cover.

Our air-admittance valves open when there is negative pressure in the pipe system, and close again after ventilation to become impermeable to odours and water. If there is a balance of pressure in the system, the valve remains closed.

• In areas where there is a risk of back flow

• On reservoirs, e.g. lifting or separator systems

• In installation situations where only a horizontal or slanting position is possible

Valve function

Frost protection

Installation situations where air-admittance valves cannot be used

Our systems can each be fitted to pipes of three different sizes:DN 100 – 90 – 70 and DN 50 – 40 – 30. The nominal connection diameters have been selected to make it possible to fit the valve to a pipe of diameter DN 90 and DN 40 by inserting it into a sleeve. If the valve is to be inserted into a pipe without a sleeve, of nominal width DN 100 and DN 50, the rubber connector has to be used. For nominal diameters DN 70 and DN 30, the rubber connector is used to allow the valve to be pushed onto a pipe without a sleeve.

For non-standard pipe dimensions, adap-ters must be used.

Art.No. 11.020.00..S099

Art.No. 11.A21.00..0099Requirements for the use of air-admittance valves in areas susceptible to frost

• No damage to the building as a result of pipes penetrating delicate roofs

• No heat lost, thanks to closed system (particularly relevant to old buildings where waste water pipes are not insu-lated, and top floor flats)

• Particularly suitable for low-energy houses and passive houses

• Reduces the risk of open main ventila-tion pipes freezing up

• Creates the necessary conditions for the ventilation of waste systems inside buildings. Water drains away more efficiently in vulnerable pipe areas

• If there is a fire, the risk of fire and fumes spreading via the drainage system is reduced, as the chimney effect is eliminated

• Flexibility in the planning of drainage system ventilation

• Cost savings thanks to quick installation

Only air-admittance valves which are classified in Class I may be installed.Requirement of DIN EN 12056-1, section 5.8, regarding frost protection:Drainage systems must be planned and installed in such a way as to avoid the risk of their being destroyed or ceasing to function as a result of frost damage.

Advantages of installing mechanical air-admittance valves instead of conventional rooftop ventilation

If the cross-section of the drainage system is reduced, a backflow develops. The positive pressure that is created means that the valve remains closed. The neces-sary intake of air can thus not take place. This problem can be resolved by using ventilair duplex - see page 13.

ventilair active is not comparable with a conventional air-admittance valve. It does not have a valve operating mechanically, but instead works as part of a two-way system via a cartridge that is filled with a multi-layer active carbon filter pad.

The problem-solver for two-way venting with the simultaneous filtering of any gases produced by toilet lifting systems, domestic sewer systems, open ventilation systems, e.g. oil tanks, etc.

ventilair® active – Two-way vent valve with activated carbon filter pad

Venting of a lifting system Aeration of a lifting system

Fig. 1 Fig. 2

For filtering arising gases in domestic sewer systems, toilet lifting systems, existing open vents, e.g. on oil tanks etc.

The filter insert is a multi-layer fabric, impregnated with active carbon. Life of the carbon filter: depending on loading, up to several years.

ventilair active must be installed in an accessible outdoor location if used in connection with waste water containing excrement to ensure that when the filter medium is saturated no gases can pene-trate the indoor area and the filter cart-ridge can be replaced without difficulty.

In case of waste water free of excrement, it can also be installed in the indoor area.

Installation can be done either vertically or horizontally (see Fig. 3 and 4 on page 11).

If installed horizontally, ventilair active is to be mounted so that it is protected from the weather (e.g. in a concealed box, art.no. 17.259.00..S099).

ventilair active is not suitable for two-way venting of waste water downcomer pipes.

With lifting systems ≥ 20 m3 pumping capacity an air-admittance valve must additionally be installed in the inflow pipe (see Fig. 2 below and Chart 2 on page 11).

ventilair active is UV-resistant and frostproof up to -20°C as verified by LGA-QualiTest GmbH following DIN EN 12380. As it is classed as a filter and, as such, not subject to the standards DIN EN 12056 and DIN 1986-100, it is to be considered purely as a problem-solver. For this reason, the installation of ventilair active should be contrac- tually agreed.

ventilair active functions in a two-way system.

This means that when positive pressure develops in systems, e.g. when filling lifting systems or containers, a balance of pressure outwards occurs (see Fig. 1 below and Chart 1 on page 11).

At the same time the gases and smells arising are held back by the activated carbon.

When pumping off lifting systems or con-tainers negative pressure occurs in the system, which ventilair active compen-sates with air flowing in from outside (see Fig. 2 below and Chart 2 on page 11).

When odours are noticed, the filter pad is exhausted. Open the cap and replace the filter insert.

We recommend also checking the activated carbon filter system when carrying out the required servicing of systems in which ventilair active is installed.

Due to the fact that the product both aerates and vents, it does not comply with the standards DIN EN 12056 and DIN 1986-100. Prior to installation, an appro- priate contractual agreement should therefore be concluded or approval obtained.

ventilair duplex® – two-way vent valve for waste water pipes

Aeration of the systemventilair duplex aerates in the same way as a conventional air-admittance valve. In the case of negative pressure, valve 1 opens and allows air to flow into the system. At the same time, sealing element 2 closes, thus protecting carbon filter pad 3 and extending its service life.

In case of a water backflow sealing element 2 closes. It protects car-bon filter 3 from wetness and prevents system-related water leakage.

Functions

Venting of the systemThe ventilair duplex can also be used for venting purposes. In the case of a defect in the drainage system piping, positive pressure is created when water is discharged. In such cases, sealing element 2 is raised and vents the system.Valve 1 remains shut.In this way, pressure compensation occurs if the cross section of the drainage system is reduced or if the system is fully loaded. A backflow in the drainage system is pre-vented in case of water pockets or ground pipe counter-gradient.Similarly, the collection of water in toilets and sinks with 45° connection to the waste water pipe is prevented (see illustration on page 15).When the system is being vented, the drainage gases are absorbed via carbon filter 3.

Our systems can each be fitted to pipes of three different sizes:DN 100 – 90 – 70 and DN 50 – 40 – 30.The nominal connection diameters have been selected to make it possible to fit the valve to a pipe of diameter DN 90 and DN 40 by inserting it into a sleeve. If the valve is to be inserted into a pipe without a sleeve, of nomi-nal width DN 100 and DN 50, the rubber connector has to be used. For nominal diameters DN 70 and DN 30, the rubber connector is used to allow the valve to be pushed onto a pipe without a sleeve. For non-standard pipe dimensions, adapters must be used.
