ABOUT THE EVENTThe Lean Analytics Association (LAA) is organizing the 2nd Lean Innovation Forum (LiF 2016) which is being held from Tuesday (Nov 8) to Thursday (Nov 10) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Lean Innovation Forum was established as part of the Lean Analytics Association’s mission to help organizations learn about the latest trends and best practices, as well as innovate more effectively and disruptively, and to share their experience with the community of lean innovation practitioners and experts. LiF 2016 presents an exciting opportunity for lean practitioners, organizations, experts and researchers to meet new professionals, catch-up with their existing network and exchange their latest learnings.

LiF 2016 is a three-day event divided into the pre-forum and post-forum training sessions, and the main one-day event. Both days of the training sessions are designed in a way to offer something for everyone. Both experienced professionals looking to expand their knowledge and individuals who are starting their lean innovation journey and wish to learn about the basic concepts, will find topics suitable for their needs and interests.

Key themes to be covered are about Lean Innovation and New Product/ Service Development, including, among others, Set-Based Concurrent Engineering, Design Thinking, Lean Startup, Agile Development, Lean Leadership and Visual Management.

The Lean Innovation Forum aims to become the single biggest annual lean innovation event for practitioners, experts, and people/organizations striving to become better, faster and more user-centric by enabling participants to:

• Share and exchange knowledge and experiences, discuss and acquire the latest trends in lean thinking for innovation

PRE-FORUM TRAINING SESSIONSTUESDAY (November 8) THURSDAY (November 10)

POST-FORUM TRAINING SESSIONS

Training session A

LEAN-DRIVEN INNOVATIONMr Norbert Majerus (Goodyear)

The focus of the Lean-driven innovation training is on applying lean, especially lean startup thinking to the front end of the innovation creation process (also known as “fuzzy front end”).

The workshop covers the process from the generation of ideas to putting the concepts on a path to a profitable product and explains how lean thinking can enhance this process. Lean principles and applicable tools are explained and supported with hands on exercises and examples.

Training session C

VISUAL PLANNING FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND KNOWLEDGEDr Göran Gustafsson (Chalmers) &Mr Peter Palmér (LPPDE)

A full-day training session about the journey through the different key-points of the Product Development Process focusing on visualization.

Key aspects covered in this training include: Core values and the PD system, Leadership and principles, Customer value & Innovation, Normal Situation, Continuous Improvement, Flow, Set-based thinking, Building and using knowledge, and Visual project management and planning.

Training session D

SBi2: SUPERCHARGE YOUR LEAN INNOVATION PROCESSES (gamified training)Mr Matic Golob (LAA)

The participants will learn how to apply the Set-Based Integrated Innovation (SBi2) framework, developed on the foundations of Toyota’s Set-Based Concurrent Engineering and Design Thinking methodology in a fresh, entertaining way.

The session will kick-off with a brief introduction to the approach’s fundamental ideas based on which the participants will dive straight into a fast-paced business game, full of interesting roles and exciting activities. The participants will be part of an innovation team, tasked to develop a new product following the SBi2 process. They will learn how to elicit real customer desires and needs, as well as how these can be rapidly transformed into a set of potential solutions, prototyped and validated, while innovating cross-functionally in order to ensure the product will reach the market successfully.

Training session A

SMART MATURITY ASSESSMENT FOR LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTDr Myrna Flores (LAA) & Ms Doroteja Maklin (LAA)

In this session, the participants will be introduced to the SMART Maturity Assessment Tool for Product Development.

The session will begin with an introduction to performance measurement, its importance and how to achieve improvement by simply assessing different practices based on 4 perspectives: process, tools, knowledge and skills. After the initial introduction to SMART Tool in the second part of the day, each participant will use SMART Tool to partially assess the leanness of a fictitious company’s innovation process and collaboratively build a roadmap based on the assessment outcomes. The session will conclude with a discussion on how SMART can be used to help them build a roadmap for their lean innovation journey.

Training session B

LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: ADVANCED (in French)Dr Patrick Garcia (Lean Enterprise)

The advanced day of Lean Product Development training is based on two simulations. The first simulation is covering the improved product development processes (Part 2) as continued from Day 1. The simulation is analyzed and reflection on whether there exists room for further improvement is made. Then, the participants transition to the final simulation about optimized Lean product development processes that is based on the full application of the lean advanced principles.

Training session B

LEAN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: BASICS (in French)Dr Patrick Garcia (Lean Enterprise)

Short presentation of the lean basic PD principles with a focus on the lean advanced PD principles such as front-loading, concurrent engineering, the concept phase, followed by the differences between set-based engineering and one iterative point model. This session will also cover: Trade-off curves, Problem-solving PDCA, Standardization, Products/Processes and Skills, People, Leadership, Chief Engineer, Coaching, 5S in Labs and Visual management at Workplace (Obeya Room).

PD Simulation 1: Traditional PD Processes. Illustration of the typical types of Waste

PD Simulation 2: Improved PD Processes (Part 1)

Training session C

DESIGN THINKINGProf Christopher Tucci (EPFL)

In this session, the participants will engage in a multidisciplinary collaboration to tackle real world problems with a human-centered approach. By following this approach, the participants are encouraged to discover through observation what is meaningful and to whom, to generate empathy with users, find a specific focus on a challenge and ideate on possible solutions. These must, then, be quickly prototyped, tested and iterated based on results. The participants will learn about some of the tools and exercises to generate insights, collaborative working, idea building, rapid prototyping and iterative testing.

Training session D

SET-BASED CONCURRENT ENGINEERING GAMEDr Monica Rossi (Politecnico di Milano)

In this session, the participants will play a simulation game about Set-Based Concurrent Engineering (SBCE), one of the most paradoxical approaches introduced with lean product development. The game is designed to bring hands-on experience to practitioners to understand SBCE principles and enablers. Participants will be grouped in teams and will compete. The players will design, build and test a simplified airplane structure using LEGO bricks, with the aim to satisfy known customer requirements.

The game is structured in two phases: the first, leads the players toward the traditional Point-Based Concurrent Engineering; in the second phase, main tools and enablers of the SBCE approach will be given to the players.
