Natal de ar puro, céu, mar e dunas esplendorosos. Cidade da América do Sul mais próxima da Europa. De gente que sabe receber bem e que compreende a vocação natural da nossa ter ra: o Turismo. O Brasil e o mundo já estão enxergando es-tas vantagens. Tanto que Natal foi escolhida para ser uma das cidades-sede da Copa do Mundo de 2014. E não por acaso. Te-mos a maior e mais moderna rede hoteleira do Nordeste, com mais de 27 mil leitos. Temos um centro de convenções capaz de receber até 20 mil pessoas.

Para sediar a Copa, estamos aplicando recursos na infraestru-tura da cidade. Somente na área de mobilidade urbana, vamos investir 350 milhões de reais em obras importantes, assegurando o direito de ir e vir de natalenses e turistas. A Copa será uma usina de empregos para o nosso povo. Natal passará pelo maior choque de desenvolvimento de sua história, sempre com ênfase no propósito da sustentabilidade. Natal: a Loved City Natal city of fresh air, amazing dunes, seas and sky. The South America

city that is closest to Europe. City of people who knows how to host someone and understand the natural course of our country: the Tourism. Brazil and the world are already seeing in relation to these advantages. Natal was chosen as one of the headquarter cities of the World Cup in 2014 because Natal has the biggest and most modern hotel chain of the Northeast region, with more than 27 thousand rooms. We have a convention center that can receive up to 20 thousand people.

In order to host the World Cup; we are investing resources in the city infra-structure. Only in the transportation sector we are investing 350 million reais in important improvements that ensure the right of locomotion of the tourists and citizens of Natal. The World Cup is going to be a fountain of jobs for our people. Natal will suffer the greatest transformation in terms of development of its his-tory, always aiming the sustainability. Because the goal of the City Hall includes to transform Natal in an example of sustainable city.

The exposition we have as a host city of the World Cup shall consoli-date Natal as an international touristic destination. We should be completely aware that nothing would be valuable if the landscapes were not so beautiful, the natural resources blessed and preserved. Everything is registered in this work, through pictures, preserved forever by the photographer Canindé Soares. This document-book is a registry of an age. The demonstration of interest by the Governmental Authorities in preserving the history, culture of Natal and encourage the tourist activity, investment attraction always considering the legal principal of the sustainable environment.

Here, we cultivate the remembrance. The natural, cultural, literary and ethical values. With the permission of poets such as Diógenes da Cunha Lima, Murilo Melo Filho, Vicente Serejo, Cassiano Arruda Câmara, João Batista Machado, Manoel Onofre Júnior, Nei Leandro de Castro, Ana Maria Cascudo. O Morro do Careca é nosso símbolo maior. Cartão postal principal. Encravado numa encosta do Oceano Atlântico, o morro da Praia de Ponta Negra confunde-se com a história da cidade. Hoje é patrimônio preservado. A Prefeitura do Natal regulamentou a área e preservou todo o cordão de dunas que permeia a linda paisagem.

Morro do Careca is our most important symbol. Main Post Card. Placed on the downhill of Atlantic Ocean, the hill of Praia de Ponta Negra is totally related to the city history. Nowadays it is preserved patrimony of the city. The City Hall of Natal regulated the area and preserved all dunes that is part of the landscape.

Cidade-berço do folclorista, pesquisador e escritor Luís da Câmara Cascudo, Natal sempre teve vocação para formar ta-lentos l iterários que ajudam a compor o patrimônio imaterial da sua nação. Para compreender, basta um mergulho nas crô-nicas reimpressas nas páginas que seguem. Foi enquanto admi-rava e organizava as paisagens exuberantes que compõem este

cenário que me invadiram lembranças saudosistas. Estas nos transportaram às obras primas eternizadas pelo mestre Câmara Cascudo, pelo advogado e escritor Diógenes da Cunha Lima, pelos jornalistas Murilo Melo Filho, Vicente Serejo, Cassiano Arruda Câmara, João Batista Machado, pelo escritor Manoel Onofre Júnior, pelo poeta e escritor Nei Leandro de Castro. Reavivamos a alma sentimental de Natal , ao republicar versões impressas da obra “Nossa Cidade Natal – Crônicas”, editada, pela Sebo Vermelho Edições, em 2007.

Nada casual. Ou não. Uma ideia. O desejo de homenagear a cidade. A certeza de que a composição de crônicas consagradas, resgatadas e publicadas nesta obra, com as imagens selecionadas de Canindé Soares, mesmo num lapso de improviso cheio de fé, não resultariam numa obra caótica ou aleatória. Os elementos simplesmente casaram. Pareciam feitos um para o outro. Casa-mento que não poderia deixar de ter o apoio da Prefeitura do Natal, que tem incentivado o turismo e a cultura contribuindo para a consolidação da cidade como destino turístico nacional e internacional. Canindé Soares arrived in the Palácio Felipe Camarão and put on the table a set of pictures. Natal images. If we look carefully we can see more. Magic moments registered by the lenses of a Professional that tell us with zeal and expertise the recent history of the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. This printed selection organized by the photographer along with the City Hall of Natal, registries an essential period. The pictures say by themselves, they lead become true a narrative of a pretty Natal. A pretty city that is not only constituted by amazing landscapes. Those are reinforced by the best consecrated text. The images tell us what the letters say very well. Recovered letters so that new and future generations cultivate the literary skill of this place. We preserve our very rich remembrance. Precious purposes and values. Many times, modernity results in new process that removes the emotionalism of the reality. This work preserves the most sublime existence of Natal. The nature conjugated in human capacity.

The hometown of the folklorist, researcher and writer Luís da Câmara Cas-cudo, Natal always have a tendency to create literary talents that helps to constitute the immaterial equity of its nation. To understand that, you have to analyze deeply the chronic reprinted in the next pages. While I was organizing and looking at the amazing landscapes that compose this scenario that these nostalgic remembrances emerged. Those take us to masterpiece eternized by master Câmara Cascudo, by the lawyer and writer Diógenes da Cunha Lima, the journalists Murilo Melo Filho, Vicente Serejo, Cassiano Arruda Câmara, João Batista Machado, by the writer Manoel Onofre Júnior, by the poet and writer Nei Leandro de Castro. We relived the sentimental soul of Natal by reproducing printed versions of the work “Nossa Cidade Natal – Crônicas”, [Our Natal City – Chronics], edited by Sebo Vermelho Edições in 2007.

Casually or not, an idea, the desire of paying homage to the city. The certainty that the consecrate chronic compositions registered and published here, along with the images selected by Canindé Soares even in a extempore lapse and faith, does not result in a chaotic or randomized work. The ele-ments simply combined. They were made each other. A partnership that have to be supported by the City Hall of Natal which has been encouraging the tourism and culture, contributing to the consolidation of the city as national and international touristic destination. This work is a mosaic of images and precious texts and a great contribution to the memory of the city that was born as a province and today celebrates the honor of being one of the headquarter cities of the World Cup in 2014.

Emblemática. A torre tem 37 metros de altura e 150 degraus em espiral. Apropriou-se de uma das mais belas vistas da cidade. O farol marítimo, o Farol de Mãe Luiza, do bairro de Mãe Luiza, foi inaugurado em 1951, quando estreou

sua lanterna do alto da torre movida a energia elétrica, com alcance de 44 km. Administrado pela Capitania dos Portos, qualquer um pode respirar esta mara-

vilha. É aberto à visitação pública.

The marine lighthouse, Farol de Mãe Luiza, in the Mãe Luiza neighborhood, was inaugurated in 1951, when its lantern at the tower top, powered by electricity was started up, reaching 44 km. Administered by

the Brazilian Port Authority, anyone can enjoy this amazing touristic place. It is open to public visits.

Ser natalense é um dom de Deus.Minha cidade, eleita, não é feita de pedra e cal , t i jolos vermelhos e barros sal itrados. Antes, tem o braço das dunas do Tirol que se alonga buscando o mar de Ponta Negra. É uma cidade oferecida à sensibil idade dos olhos e da pele, muitas ternuras, recebendo presentes diários dos Reis Magos que vieram para ficar. O Forte, visto do alto, tem forma de estrela. Uma lembrança feita de lutas e desassossegos, história de uma vigíl ia, vigia.

O claro cotidiano da cidade Natal teve nomes sonoros de pre-senças antigas. Foi Cidade dos Reis. Ainda no domínio espanhol sobre Portugal, Natal los Reys. Os holandeses a denominaram Amsterdã ou, repetindo o nome dado à grande cidade do Norte, Nova Amsterdã. Os nomes não acrescentam qualidade, mas Na-tal apascenta a gente.

Os verdes do Potengi são carregadas águas marinhas, mancha-das de mangue e lodo e, talvez, da vida pobre da beira do rio. As margens do Potengi são vidas descoloridas. O Norte, margem esquerda, é conquistado no esforço da força operária. Segue a tendência brasileira de urbanização.

Natal é onde o amor toma partido, as mulheres têm olhos de espera e há um sentimento de que qualquer coisa de bom

está para acontecer. O tempo é decisivo para descobrir as suas várias belezas. A

cidade respira pelas ruas largas e arborizadas, pelas árvores de quintal – mais cajueiros e mangueiras – e pelos pequenos jardins. É preciso buscar os horizontes. A necessidade fez a cidade apon-tar para o alto nos edifícios de apartamentos. Tantos espaços horizontais a conquistar e os homens fechados em apartamentos. Até a classe rica despreza os horizontes.

Aqui é o nascer dos filhos, o meu ancoradouro, chão definitivo, encanto jovem, a marca tranquilizadora na maturação da idade.

Clear Day and Light Breeze

Being born in Natal is a gift of God. My city, elected is not like lime and stone, red bricks and clay. Before, there is the dune arm of Tirol that extends forward the sea of Ponta Negra. It is a city offered to the sensibility of eyes and skin, much kindness, receiving daily gifts of the Wizard Kings that has arrived to stay. The Fortress saw from upstairs has the shape of a star. A remembrance made by fi ghts and agitation, history of a vigil, a watch.

The clear everyday of the city of Natal have famous names of ancient presences. City of kings, during the Spanish domination over Portugual. Natal los Reys. The Dutch called it Amsterdam or reput-ing the name given to the North City, New Amsterdam. The name did not add quality, but Natal feeds us.

The green landscapes of Potengi are full of seaweed colored with mangrove and mud and maybe with poor life of the riverside. The sides of Potengi are composed of uncolored lives. The North, left side, is conquered by the labor of the employees. According to the Brazilian tendency of urbanization.

Natal is a place where love has a defi ned position. The women have hopeful eyes and there is a feeling of all good things that may happen.

The time is decisive to discover its beauties. The city breathes through the large and bosky streets by the trees from the yards – mango and cashews trees – and by small gardens. It is required to search for new horizons. The necessity obliged the city grows upstairs through the buildings of apartments. So many places to conquer and the people closed in the apartments. Even the rich class disdains the horizons.

Here it the place where children are born, my harbor, my safe port, my enchantment of youth, the soother mark in the maturity of the age.

Many good and bad things happend here fi rst, in this city prepared to changes. It is required to be patient with the city, with its severe and light turpitude. After all, it can be guilty by violence and badness in the world.

It is required to love the city with its mysteries and witchcraft, this musical city, of compositors and interpreters, of rhythm in bars and taverns of the extended night.

Fortress of Barra do Rio Grande, known as Forte dos Reis Magos or Fortaleza dos Reis Magos it was the initial mark of the city. It was founded in December 25, 1599 in the right side of Potengi river. The original architecture has the form of a star, designed by the priest and architect Gaspar de Samperes with the objective of defending the colonizer Portuguese against foreign and indian attacks, it was preserved.

Fortaleza da Barra do Rio Grande, conhecida como Forte dos Reis Magos ou Fortaleza dos Reis Magos, foi o marco inicial da cidade. Foi fundada em 25 de Dezembro de 1599, no lado direito da barra do Rio Potengi. Arquitetura original em formato de estrela, traçada pelo padre e arquiteto Gaspar de Samperes, com objetivo de defender os portu-gueses colonizadores de ataques estrangeiros e indígenas, foi preservada.

Ponte do Potengi Presidente Costa e Silva. Hoje, Ponte de Igapó. Inaugurada em abril de 1916, seus trilhos impulsionaram o progresso da cidade. Companhia inglesa Cleve-land Bridge Engineering and Co. construiu. Ponte “treliçada”, cuja autoria é atribuída ao francês Georges Camille Imbaul, custou 2 contos, 474 mil e 939 réis. Tem extensão de 550 metros, com nove vãos de 50 metros e um de 70. Desativada em 1970, hoje é tombada pelo patrimônio histórico estadual.

Potengi Presidente Costa e Silva Bridge. Nowadays called Ponte de Igapó. Inaugurated in April 1916, its railways propelled the progress of the city. It was built by the English company Cleveland Bridge Engineering and Co. The truss bridge, projected by the French engineer Georges Camille Imbaul, costed 2 contos, 474 thousand and 939 réis. Along its length of 550 meters, there are nine spans of 50 meters and one span of 70 m. It is out of operation since 1970, it is spot listed as State Heritage Place.

Viva e porque é viva, uma cidade precisa também de um ad-ministrador de sonhos, de um agricultor de paisagens, de um ourives para a restauração de suas joias públicas que são seus relógios, suas torres, seus arabescos das fachadas antigas. De um historiador não oficial para escrever a história dos simples.

Viva e porque é viva, uma cidade precisa de alguém que seja capaz de planejar suas tristezas, projetar seus desejos. E so-bretudo de alguém que seja capaz de levar adiante um grande programa de alegrias. De candidatos à vida e não a cargos, de secretários sem pastas para assuntos de tranquil idade.

Viva e porque é viva, uma cidade precisa de fiscais em suas praças, alguém especial izado na recuperação das f lores, na res-tauração de bancos e de jardins. De alguém altamente treinado para atendimento de urgência das árvores envelhecidas.

Viva, porque é viva, uma cidade precisa de suas pensões men-tirosas que anunciam ser familiares. De seus lugares que nada avisam e são perigosos. Viva, porque é viva, uma cidade precisa de poetas, de executivos e de noivos. De líricos e trágicos.

Every city is home

Alive because it is alive, a city needs much more than the administration of its streets and squares, alleys and av-enues, bridges and viaducts. An alive city, so alive, may need a person to administrate the squares of those who are born, the districts of those who live. The forgotten suburbs of the ones who die.

Alive because it is alive, a city also need dreams ad-ministrator, a landscapes cultivator, a goldsmith to restore its public gems which are their watches, their towers, their arabesques on the ancient facades. A city needs a not-offi cial historian to write the story of the simple.

Alive because it is alive, a city needs a person able to plan its melancholy, to design their desires. And, above all, a city needs someone able to keep ahead a great happiness program. It needs candidates to life and no to job positions, it needs secretaries with no folders to matters of peace.

Alive because it is alive, a city needs tax on their streets, someone who specializes in the recovery of fl owers, the restoration of banks and gardens. From someone highly trained in emer-gency care of the trees aged.

Alive because it is alive, a city needs to go beyond the simple desires of paved and lighted streets, of streets imitat-ing the progress, of luminaries upgrading poverty. However, a living city needs specialists in idleness, technicians in secret, the coordinators of the winds and waves.

The fantastic View of an Italian architect, Palumbo, designed Natal in 1929 with large avenues in the neighbor-hoods of Tirol and Petrópolis through which fl ows a perma-nent wind that comes from the sea.

places always remember it.It is the city of the sun, the nativity scene city, city of the

typical neighborhood (Ribeira, Alecrim, Baldo, Lagoa Seca, Carrasco, Quintas, Rocas, Canto do Mangue); city of the beautiful beaches (Ponta Negra, Pirangi, Areia Preta, do Meio, do Forte, da Redinha); city of the courageous fi sher-men, the white and wild dunes, luxuriant coconut tree, the wrack sea, the adorned cashew trees, the spendthrift mango trees; city of traditional places (Grande Ponto, Reis Magos, Natal Club, Majestic, Mercado, Rex, Royal, São Luís, Cova da Onça, rua Chile, Dr. Barata, Tavares de Lira, Rio Branco); city of the cable cars and declension, heroic city that survived from the Dutch and that was the trampoline of Victory; city of a attractive and cozy people, the city smashed between Potengi River and Atlantic Ocean, Brazilian ad-vanced sentinel city forward to Africa.

There, I left the remembrance of my simple childhood, al-though unforgettable and happy, of my Fir Eucharist at the Church of Santa Teresinha, the soccer match at the seminary, of the classes with Cascudinho, Gentil Ferreira, Clementino Câmara, Celestino Pimentel, Alvamar Furtado and Canon Luis Wanderley at Atheneu, of the rivalry between ABC and America, of the black-outs during the period of war; of the matinee at Aero-Clube, the footpath in the carnival and my fi rst job in the “O Diário” editorial offi ce.

As far I am from Natal as I love, respect and admire it. I left it when I was 18 years old searching for no hori-

zons and dreams. But I left there my roots, my blood, my origin, my parents, sisters, relatives and friends that I love so much and miss forever.

Quem, como eu, é obrigado por dever de ofício, já há dez anos, a cometer um comentário diário sobre esta cidade (seus reclamos, problemas, incertezas) e até apreciar o comportamen-to do seu povo (“aqui se gastam 200 para impedir que o vizinho ganhe 20”), esta é a oportunidade de relatar, em vez de comentar. Por isso conto uma pequena história. História com agá.

Tudo porque já ouvi muita estória tentando explicar a origem da legenda Natal, Cidade do Sol, usada para propagar aqui e alhures os seus encantos. Justificativas arrancadas a fórceps. Da antiguidade às nossas origens indígenas. Só cascata.

Minha história tem 16 anos. Ocorreu em l967, quando já se anunciava o Plano Diretor e a valorização de “nossas potencialida-des turísticas”. Argumentos aproveitados na época pelo pessoal da Manchete para vender uma reportagem à Prefeitura (um caderno co-lorido de 16 páginas na Fatos & Fotos). Tarefa entregue a Sebastião Barbosa, que tinha a primeira oportunidade de revelar seu enorme talento de fotógrafo. E a mim mesmo, encarregado do texto.

Foram trinta dias de batalhas em busca de ângulos fotogênicos de Natal, Natal dos anos 60 (praias, coqueiros e umas poucas menini-nhas de biquíni, assim mesmo à custa de muita persuasão). E fomos

nós para o Rio de Janeiro concluir a missão. Logo no primeiro dia, na sede da Editora Bloch (então na Rua Frei Caneca, vizinho ao pre-sídio), a primeira desconfiança em torno do aproveitamento do nos-so trabalho veio do próprio Adolpho Bloch, dono daquilo tudo:

- Dezesseis páginas sobre Natal, na minha revista? Nem pa-gas! Conheço aquilo. Passei lá uma noite, na época da Guerra. É uma droga!

As excelentes fotos de Tião garantiram não somente a publi-cação. Valeram um aumento de salário para o autor, concedido pelo próprio Adolpho.

A explicação real para o uso da legenda Natal, Cidade do Sol está no titulo da reportagem. Título em tipos fortes e cor laranja sobre os coqueiros de Pirangi, o principal da edição. A reporta-gem virou caderno isolado, distribuído em Natal anos a fio.

A edição mereceu festas e até um lançamento com coquetel e tudo no Hotel dos Reis Magos. Da badalação ficou uma legenda, uma marca, uma definição para Natal.

Só depois começou o “folquilore” em torno do assunto.

Sun and Waterfall

Those, as me, is obliged by a duty, from tem years ago, to say something about this city everyday (its complain, problems and un-certainties) and even observe the behavior of its people (“here, people used to spend 200 reais to avoid that the neighbor receives 20”) this is the opportunity to tell instead of remark. So I am going to tell a short history. History with “h”.

Because I have already heard a story which tried to explain the origin of Natal, city of Sun, used to propagate here and somewhere else its beauties. The reasons were explained without any basement. From our predecessor of our Indian origin. A big lie.

My history occurred 16 years ago, in 1967, when the Management Plan and valuation of our “touristic potential” were already announced. Arguments that were used at that time by the people from Manchete for selling documentaries to the City Hall (a colorful section with 16 pages in Fatos & Fotos). This task was a responsibility of Sebastião Barbosa that had his fi rst opportunity of showing his skills as photographer. An I was responsible for the text.

It was thirty days of battles searching for the best picture angles of Natal, the city of years and [sic] (beaches, coconut trees and some girls wearing bikinis after much persuasion). Then, we were to Rio de Janeiro comply our mission. In the fi rst day, in the headquarter of Editora Bloch (at that time at Rua Frei Caneca, next to the prison) the fi rst distrust about our utility in this job starts with Adolpho Bloch, the owner of all of that:

- Sixteen pages about Natal, in my magazine? No way! I know that. I spent there one night during the war. It is horrible!

The excellent pictures of Tião ensured not only the publishing. But the resulted in a salary increase for the author granted by the own Adolpho.

The real explanation for the use of Natal legend, City of Sun is in the title of the documentary. Title with strong and orange letters about the coconut trees of Pirangi, the main edition. The documentary became a separate section and was distributed in Natal for years.

The edition deserved celebrations and the release in a cocktail at Hotel dos Reis Magos. The success left a legend, a mark a defi nition for Natal

Only after that the “folklore” about this subject has stated.

O Centro de Turismo de Natal agrega um pouco de tudo que é produzido em artesanato e souvenirs turísticos no Rio Grande do Norte. 36 lojas, espaço reservado para obras de arte, antiguidades e livros. O prédio é da década de 1930. Foi casarão. Foi escola. Foi presídio. Foi, fi nalmente, trans-formado no Centro de Turismo, em 1976.

The Tourism Center in Natal presents a small portion of all products made by artisans, as well as touristic souvenirs of Rio Grande do Norte. 36 stores, a space reserved for art works, vintage products and books. The building is dated of 1930’s decade. It was a mansion. It was a school. It was a jailhouse. And, fi nally, it was transformed in Tourism Center in 1976.

Natal da minha juventude, por volta dos anos 6O, era uma cidade tranquila e provinciana, que crescia, lentamente,na hori-zontal. Cerca de 160.000 habitantes. Raros prédios com mais de quatro andares. O clima era bom, ninguém reclamava do calor.Podia-se andar, com absoluta segurança, em qualquer parte, a toda hora, e as casas não tinham grades nas portas e janelas.

A programação cultural deixava a desejar. Por exemplo: os cinemas - Nordeste, Rex e Rio Grande, os melhores - exibiam bons filmes, porém muito tempo após o lançamento nacional. Havia pouquíssimos aparelhos de televisão, se bem me lembro. Nunca me liguei em televisão. Supermercados? Nem um sequer. A Livraria Universitária, de Walter Pereira, era uma espécie de templo da cultura, onde intelectuais se encontravam para bater papo, com frequência. Câmara Cascudo dominava a cena literária, com a sua presença exuberante, mas, ao que me consta, não era habitué da Universitária.

Todo dia, de tardezinha, meio mundo acorria ao Grande Pon-to, espécie de centro de convivência, em plena Rua João Pessoa, entre a Princesa Isabel e a Av. Rio Branco. As rodas de conver-sa iam noite adentro. Falava-se de política, de futebol - ABC e América -, da vida alheia...

Mulheres não frequentavam aquelas ilhas infestadas de pi-ratas; passavam, como já disse numa crônica, velas pandas ao vento, em direção às lojas da moda - “A Formosa Síria”, “O Novo Continente”,“Quatro e Quatrocentos”-, aos cinemas Rex e Nordeste, à sorveteria 0ásis... No Grande Ponto realizaram-se grandes comícios e - houve um tempo era ali a bem dizer o epi-centro do carnaval de rua.

Se me perguntassem qual a Natal que eu prefiro - a de ontem ou a de hoje - responderia: a de ontem. Sem nostalgia.

My Natal from the past

The City of Natal during my youth, about the 60´s, the city was calm and small and grew slowly in a horizontal manner. It had about 160,000 habitants. Building with more than four fl oors was rare. The weather was good, nobody used to complain about the heat. It was possible to walk in safety anywhere and at any time, the houses had no bars in the doors and windows.

The cultural programs were not so good. The movies, for instance: Nordeste, Rex and Rio Grande were the best – but they show movies later than national exhibition. If I remember there were few TVs. I never cared about television. Supermarkets? There isn’t. The Livraria Universitária of Walter Pereira was a kind of culture temple where the intellectual people use to go to chat very often. Câmara Cascudo was the main character of the literary scenario with is pompous presence, but, if I remember, he used not to frequent Universitária.

Everyday, in the evening, lots of people went to Grande Ponto, a kind of center of fraternization on Rua João Pessoa, between Princesa Isabel and Av. Rio Branco. The circle of conversations fasts until the night. They talked about politics, soccer – ABC x América – and other people’s lives…

Women didn’t go to that islands full of pirates; they crossed there, as I wrote in a chronic , like sails in the wind, forward to fashion stores - ” A Formosa Síria”,”O Novo Continente”,“Quatro e Qua-trocentos“-, to the Rex and Nordeste movies, to Oásis ice cream parlor... At the Grande Ponto it was performed big politician meeting – sometime ago, right there, it was the street carnival core.

If somebody asks me which Natal city I prefer – Natal from the past or from today – I would answer the natal from the past. Without nostalgia.

Erguido em alvenaria de tijolo, a Capitania das Artes foi desenhada no estilo neoclássico. Tombado, o prédio foi revitalizado pela Prefeitura do Natal.

Built in masonry and brickwork, Capitania das Artes was designed with neoclassic style. The building is spot listed and was reformed by the Prefecture of Natal.



A building presenting eclectical architectural characteristics, Palácio Felipe Camarão was in-

augurated in September 7, 1922, and nowadays is the Natal Prefecture Offi ce.

Natal nasceu cidade. Nunca foi ar rabalde, vi la, aglomera-ção. Nasceu no dia do nascimento de Cristo, daí o seu nome. Tem uma história simples, porque foi mais uma designação polít ica ao seu nascimento do que uma necessidade topográfi-ca. Assim, tem uma história simples e emocional.

A sua paisagem garante a imutabil idade do afeto. De um lado, o rio perene; do outro, a cinta dos morros verdes que até 1915 eram completamente deser tos.

Na minha meninice, Natal era uma cidade de 30 mil habi-tantes, i luminada por 90 candeeiros de querosene, sem trans-portes, dividida em dois grandes bair ros: a Cidade Alta e a Cidade Baixa, ou seja, a Cidade Alta e a Ribeira. Os habitantes da Cidade Alta eram os xarias, os moradores da Cidade Baixa eram canguleiros. Eu sou canguleiro.

Como ainda pertenço ao século XIX, sou testemunha do de-senvolvimento muito rápido da cidade, especialmente depois de 1930, quando foi chamada de “Cais da Europa”. Natal era o ponto mais per to do continente europeu, daí a necessidade militar de defendê-la. Povoou-se de soldados, marinheiros e aviadores. Nessa época estavam por aqui Gustavo Cordeiro de Faria, no Exército; Ari Parreiras, na Marinha; Eduardo Go-mes, na Aeronáutica. Mas em 1911 já t inha luz elétrica, telefo-ne, bondes elétricos e oito bondes puxados a burro.

A cidade foi se multiplicando com duas escolas, três, hoje, uma Universidade com 50 cursos povoam-na de uma euforia de co-nhecimentos. Logo em Lagoa Nova, onde eu caçava nambus com Flaubert, quando não havia nada naquela zona. Natal. Chamo-a Noiva do Sol, cidade sem tempestades. Cidade clara e simpática.

Monteiro Lobato me dizia: “Sua fel icidade é ter nasci-do numa cidade pequena, que cresceu com você, e daí o seu amor”. Quem nasce numa cidade grande, como o Rio de Janei-ro, Paris, Londres, Berlim, não pode ter uma recordação como quem tem numa cidade pequena. Os lugares onde dancei, hoje são ar ranha-céus. O lugar mais alto de Natal , o ponto mais alto no meu tempo, era a Torre da Matriz, onde eu via o alvis-sareiro com as bandeirinhas azul e vermelha avisando a vinda dos navios do Norte e do Sul.

Natal, Noivado Sol, minha cidade querida, deu-me o que sem-pre esperei: a tranquilidade do espírito, a paz do coração, o amor pelas coisas humildes do mundo, no meio das quais sempre vivi. Por amor à cidade, eu nada quis ser. Nem mesmo senador, como Getúlio Vargas me queria fazer. Nem Reitor da Universidade de Brasília, como Juscelino Kubistchek pensava.

Fiquei em Natal, só, pobre e fel iz. Sou o que Diógenes da Cunha Lima me chamou: um brasileiro fel iz.

At Casa Câmara Cascudo, there is the Memorial Câmara Cascudo. The life and work of Luís da Câmara Cascudo, folklore researcher born in Natal and renowned worldwide, presented at the exhibition occupying fi ve rooms of the building and private library of the researcher, who died in 1986. The building was constructed with a neoclassic styte in 1875.

Na Casa Câmara Cascudo, está o Memorial Câmara Cascudo. Vida e obra de Luís da Câmara Cascudo, folclorista natalense conhecido mundialmente, retratadas em exposição que ocupa cinco salas do edifício e na própria biblioteca particular do pesquisador, falecido em 1986.

Prédio foi construído no estilo neoclássico em 1875.

Opening Doors

Natal was born a city; it never was a suburb, village, or province. It was born in the day of Christ birth, that’s the reason of its name. It has a simple history because it was a political designation to its foundation instead of a topographic necessity. Thus, it has an emotional and simple history.

Its landscape ensures the permanent affection. In one side the calm river, on the other side, the chain of green hills which up to 1915 were totally deserts.

During my childhood, Natal was a city with more than 30 million habi-tants, lighted by 90 lamps of kerosene without transportation means, divided in two big districts, Cidade Alta and Cidade Baixa, in other words, Cidade Alta and Ribeira. The habitants of Cidade Alta were called xarias and the habitants of Cidade Baixa were called canguleiros. I was a canguleiro.

As I am still belongs to XIX century I am a wetness of the fast development of the city, especially after 1930 when it was called “Europe Harbor”. Natal was the closest port from Europe, due to that there was the necessity of defending it. It was protected by soldiers, bluejacket ant airmen. At that time, Gustavo Cordeiro de Faria was here in the army, Ari Parreiras in the navy and Eduardo Gomes in aeronautics. But in 1911 we have already electric energy, telephone, electric cable cars and eight cars that were pulled by donkeys

The city was multiplying itself with two schools, today, they are three, and a university with 50 courses provides it with a vast quantity of acknowledgement. Right there in Lagoa Nova, where I hunt nambus with Flaubert, when there is nothing there. Natal is called by me of Bride of Sun, city without storms. Clear and pleasant city.

Monteiro Lobato used to say: “your fortune is to be born in a small city that grew up with you; your love comes from there”. Those who were born in a big city, such as Rio de Janeiro, Paris, London, and Berlin may not have a remembrance such as those who were born in a small city. The places where I danced are skyscraper today. The highest placed in Natal, the highest point in my childhood was Torre da Matriz, where I saw the men with blue and red fl ags welcoming the ships from North and South

Natal, Bride of Sun, my dear city, always gave me what I expected: the peace of spirit and heart, the love by the simple thing of the world through with I always lived. By my devotion by this city I did not desired to be anything, neither senator such as Getúlio Vargas planed, nor Provost of the University of Brasilia as Juscelino Kubistchek desired.

I stayed in Natal, alone, poor and happy. I am what Diógenes da Cunha Lima told me: a happy Brazilian.

Adotei Natal como minha cidade natal, por vontade consenti-da, desde os idos de 1962. No principio, o deslumbramento por avenidas largas, pelos poucos arranha-céus e pelos mistérios in-sondáveis de suas noites-madrugadas, que causaram espanto ao estudante vindo do Vale do Açu, onde se dormia à boca da noite. Depois, a integração com seus habitantes, seus becos, seus bares, seus artistas, seus poetas, seu crescimento vertical e horizontal desordenado e sem preconceitos.

Ama-se uma cidade como se ama a uma mulher. Pela vivência e convivência. Por sua geografia humana e sentimental. Por seus segredos noturnos, por seu mar e suas marés, por suas manhãs claras, vistas com olhos ressacados da Praia do Meio (hoje com nome pomposo de Praia dos Artistas), depois de noites de boe-mia na “Tenda do Cigano”. Waldemar, por onde andará?

Ama-se uma cidade por seus botecos, no ancoradouro e cais pes-queiro do Canto do Mangue, onde a cerveja gelada desce pela garganta, matando a sede e purifi cando a alma; ou, por caminhos sinuosos, no território livre da Redinha, onde Dalila serve generosos goles de cacha-

ça com sumarentos cajus da safra. Ama-se uma cidade pelos mistérios sensuais de suas praias, pelos corpos desnudos de belas mulheres dei-tadas à beira-mar; pelos encantos e desencantos; pela resistência das favelas, pela beleza de suas dunas, pela sua gente.

Ama-se uma cidade, apesar dos contrastes entre pobres e ri-cos, uns de corações generosos e outros de ações perdulárias. Ama-se uma cidade na miscigenação do seu povo; no grito da criança desnutrida e na nudez dos alcançados pela miséria.

Ama-se esta cidade como ela é. Nos seus mistérios, nos seus segredos, nas curvas femininas de suas ruas e avenidas, no mo-vimento popular de suas feiras livres, na inquietação dos seus jo-vens, na maturidade dos seus adultos, no conformismo dos mais velhos na inocência dc suas crianças e no abraço fraterno do rio com o mar, dando boas-vindas aos que aqui aportam para ficar, viver e morrer. Ama-se a cidade Natal por opção, como se ama a mulher companheira.

Sentimental Geography

I adopted Natal as my hometown by the will of my own, since 1992. At the beginning, I was amazed with the larges avenues, few skyscraper and the impenetrable mysteries of the night and dawn that scares the student arriving from Vale do Açu where everybody slept in the evening. Then, the interaction with its habitants, alleys, bars, artists, poets, disordered vertical and horizontal expansion without bias

A city should be loved as a woman should be loved. By the experience, familiarity. Through its human and sentimental geography. Through its night secrets, sea and tide, clear morning, saw by the undertowed eyes of Praia do Meio (now called by the pompous name of Praia dos Artistas), after the bohemia nights at “Tenda do Cigano”, Waldemar, where are you?

A city should be loved by its taverns, in the anchorage and quay of Canto do Mangue, where the cold beer is drunk with pleasure, satisfying the thirst and purifying the soul; or, through the sinuous way, in the free territory of Redinha, where Dalila serves generous shots of cachaça with cashew of the current crop. A city should be loved by the sensual mysteries of its beaches, by the naked bodies of the pretty women laid down on the beach, beauties and problems, shantytown resistance, beauty of its dunes and its people.

A city should be loved, instead of its contrasts between rich and poor, ones of generous heart other with waster ac-tions. A city should be loved by the mix of its people, by the scream of the malnourished child and the naked of those affected by the poverty.

This city should be loved the way it is. By its mysteries, secrets, female curves of its streets and avenues, the popular movement in the open air market, disquietude of the youth, the experience of the adult, the conformism of the older people, purity of the children and the fraternal hug between the river and the sea, saying hello to those who arrive here to stay, live and die. I love Natal by option, as I love a partner woman.

I adopted Natal in a general, vast, unlimited manner

Natal foi descoberta num dia incerto de um mês não sabido do ano da graça de 1948.

Vindo do sertão, seu descobridor acampou na rua Professor Zuza, quartel do famoso Capitão-do-Campo.

Amarra-negro. As saudades do sertão logo foram diluídas pela brisa carinhosa da cidade, pelos grandes horizontes, pelo açude imenso do mar, pelo sol que acendia verão, escandia o azul das manhãs, reverberava no vermelho e no amarelo dos cajus.

Quando chovia, dois rios de correnteza desciam da Rua da Estrela e desaguavam na Apodi, uma vastidão de areia que ter-minava onde começavam os morros com seus insondáveis misté-rios. Nem mesmo o Capitão-do-Campo

Amarra-negro se aventurava a desvendar Os segredos do Mor-ro do Estrondo, nos confins do Tirol.

Sob a chuva, Os infantes aventureiros represavam os rios que corriam pelo leito da Rua da Estrela. Faziam baías, enseadas, es-tuários, portos seguros para os barcos de papel e as jangadas de sabugo de milho.

Em tempo de estio, o leito desses rios virava arena, territórios em litígio, posto avançado da turma da rua, sempre ameaçada pelo aguerrido bando da Camboim.

Além dos domínios da turma, erguia-se colosso dos Irmãos Maristas, com seus muros altos, seus pomares proibidos, os fru-tos avaramente guardados por ferozes sentinelas. Uma incursão àquele latifúndio podia valer um tiro de espingarda com carga de sal, que abria na carne chagas dolorosíssimas. Ah, os piedosos Irmãos Maristas!

Nos muros da infância, riscados a canivete, havia estranhos símbolos aos olhos do infante: triângulos com o vértice para baixo, cravados de riscos que pareciam agulhas. Esses sedutores hieróglifos só seriam decifrados anos mais tarde, nas palafitas da Ribeira com seu cortejo de mulheres desgarradas do Éden.

Descobri Natal em 1948. As retinas, já fatigadas, ainda guar-dam a graça, o espanto e o mistério da descoberta.

On the walls of childhood

Natal was discovered in an uncertain Day of an Unknown month in 1948

Arriving from the wilderness its discoverer stayed at rua Professor Zuza, base of the famous Capitão-do-Campo.

Amarra-negro. The nostalgic remembrance of the wilderness were forgotten by the soft breeze of the city, by the great horizons, by the immense dam of the sea, by the sun that lights the summer that scan the blue mornings and refl ected in the red and yellow cashews.

When it rained, two fl ow rivers went down Rua da Estrela and debouched in Apodi, a vast quan-tity of sand that fi nished where it started the hills and theirs impenetrable mysteries. Even Capitão-do-Campo could do that.

Under the rain, the brave Explorers dammed the Rivers that fl owed along Rua da Estrela. They built bays, basins, estuaries, safe ports for paper ships and fl oats made by corn cob.

During the drought the fl ow river used to become sand, litigation territory, advanced post of the street gang, always threatened by the strong Camboim gang.

In addition to the gang territory, it was constructed Irmãos Maristas colossus, with its high walls, without prohibited orchards, the fruits were watched over by fi erce sentinels. Getting into that land could cause a shotgun shoot with salt bullet that caused painful hurts on the skin. Oh the merciful Irmãos Maristas!

In my childhood walls scratched by jackknife, there were strange symbols for the eyes of children: upside down tri-angles with scratches that seem to nails. Those hieroglyphs are going to be understood some years later, in the blockhouse of Ribeira with the women cortege came from Eden.

I discovered Natal in 1948; my retinas already tired still remember the emotion, scare and mystery of this discovery

Os ameríndios, e em geral os povos da floresta se recusam permitir ter sua imagem repetida em pinturas, desenhos, ima-gens, fotografias. É o receio de ter surrupiada a alma, roubada a essência. Mas Canindé não é bruxo nem oráculo; não joga bú-zios, consulta bola de cristal, investiga o tarô.

Sua mágica é observar o mundo pelo viés único de uma lente. Deseja transmitir para a objetiva a imagem enfocada pela sua sensibilidade pessoal. Utopia? Uma realidade colorida pela pai-xão. O diálogo entre Canindé, paisagem ou personagem, é fugaz e efêmero, porém luminoso e inesquecível.

Ele não se repete. Une elementos. Uma folha, uma sombra, um clarão, mostram a medida certa do olhar de um guru de estilo. Os flagrantes de Canindé têm tons quentes ou suaves, texturas diferenciadas, escolhas charmosas e líricas. Seu olhar dá um to-que de frescor ao objeto, rende visuais diferentes.

Luz, cor, escuridão, Natal surge sob ótica sensual, romântica, exótica, simplória ou lírica, porque Natal é isso tudo, o somató-rio da beleza.

A cidade é uma estrela e, como diria Olavo Bilac, só amando se pode entendê-la, ouvi-la, falar-lhe. Canindé traz novas versões de velhos ambientes, que passariam despercebidos sem a trama de sua visão. O desenho desbotado no adamascado da memória, o toque de cor de um ambiente dantes monótono. Tudo revive no caldeirão feiticeiro da sua arte. Poder de criatividade e inven-ção, de pescar o instante de um sorriso, de uma lágrima, o de-sabrochar de um raio de sol, a melancolia sonora do crepúsculo no rio Potengi, a eternidade do Forte dos Reis Magos, a energia da casa de Cascudo, a ternura e a tristeza do habitante da rua, a criança brincando na praça, o velho sentado no banco, olhando o passado.

Tudo é Natal, nossa cidade/presépio, a noiva do sol, segundo Câmara Cascudo. Reciclada pela emoção de Canindé, é a mais bela do mundo. Pelo menos, em nossa opinião apaixonada...

The America Indians and people from forest in general do not allow the exhibition of their images reproduced in picture, draws, images and photos. They afraid of having their essence and soul robbed. But Canindé is neither a wizard nor an oracle; he does not play Búzios, see though the crystal ball, consult taro. Its magic is to observe the world by the unique viewpoint of a lens. He desires to transmit to its target the image focused on the people sensibility. An Utopia? A reality colored by passion. The dialogue between Canindé, landscape or character is fl eeting and drake, but luminous and unforget-table. He does not reiterate. He unifi es elements, a leaf, a shadow, a fl ash show the correct intensity of a stylish guru look. The fl agrant of Canindé has hot and soft tonalities, dif-fered textures, charming and lyrical choices. Its look grants a fresh touch in the object, provides different views. Light, color, darkness, Natal emerges by a sensual, romantic, simple or lyrical viewpoint, because Natal is all of that, the result of beauty. The city is a star, and according to Olavo Bilac, only if you love them you can understand, listen and talk to them. Canindé creates new version of old environment that could no be realized without the complexity of its look. The discolored draw in the old remembrance, grants the colored touch to a discolored environment in the past. Everything relives in the wizard caldron of its art. Its power of innovation and creativ-ity, of catching the moment of a smile, a tear, blooming of a sunshine, the sonorous melancholy of the sunset in Potengi river, the eternity of Forte dos Reis Magos, the energy of Cascudo´s House, the kindness and sadness of the street ha-bitant, the child playing in the square, the old man sat on the bench looking at the past. All of that represents Natal, our city/nativity scene, the sun bride according to Câmara Cas-cudo. A city recycled by the emotion of Canindé, it is the most beautiful city in world. At least in our ardent opinion…
