Transportation in India

A well-knit and coordinated system of transport plays an importantrole in the sustained economic growth of a country. India has a well-developed transport network comprising rail, road, coastal shipping,air transport etc.

The total length of roads in India is over 30 lakh kms including bothmetalled and unmetalled roads. In terms of road length, India hasone of the largest road networks in the world. The national highwaysaccount for less than 2% of the total road network but carry 40% ofthe movement of goods and passengers

The total rail route length is about 63,000 km and of this 13,000 kmis electrified. The railways carry over 11 million passengers and 11Lakh tones of goods everyday.

Roadways Roads are the vital lifelines of the economy making possible trade

and commerce. It helps in socio-economic development as well asbrings national integration.

Roads are most preferred modes of transportation and considered asone of the cost effective modes of transportation. It provides linkagesto other modes of transportation like railways, airways, and shipping,etc. India has a huge network of roads comprising of National

Highways, State Highways, Major DistrictR

oads and Village andother roads . Out of total length of national highways , 27 % is singlelane/intermediate lane; whereas 59 % is double-lane standard; andthe rest 14 % is four-lane/ six-lane/ eight lane standard. The roadnetwork is assuming a pivotal role in the movement of goods andpassengers.

The aggregate length of roads which was 0.4 million km in 1950-51has increased to eightfold to 3.32 million kms but the number ofgoods vehicle fleet has increased to 22-fold from 0.82 lakh to 17.85lakhs in corresponding period.

Road transport is contributing 3.69% to GDP where as all

transportation modes are contributing a total of 5.5% to GDP.

Railways in India

Indian Railways is Asia's largest railroad system and the secondlargest state-owned system under a single management in theworld.

India's railroad system is the government's largest public enterprise.Its route length extends 62,458 kilometers. The railroads of India arethe fourth most heavily used system in the world, which suggeststhe large investment made in rail transportation.

In the mid-1990s, the railroad system employed 1.7 million peopleand carried around 66 percent of India's goods traffic.
