VEL700 ASSIGNMENT 1

As asked in the assignment, I interviewed a person from a lower economic stratum – a rickshaw puller from our IIT campus itself. Following were my findings:

Monthly AnnuallyEarnings (300*30) + (6500)=

15000~180000

Expenditures: School fees(all expenses) ~2000 ~ 24000 Accommodation + food ~10000 ~120000Total ~12000 ~(30-35)*1000

There are 5 members in the family- husband-wife and three children. They live in Ladusarai near Mehrauli, Delhi on rent. One of the kids goes to a private school (the youngest one) and the other two go to government school nearby the locality. His working hours are from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm. His wife helps in earnings by going for maid work like cooking, cleaning etc. in the residential areas. He owns a bicycle for transportation. They own a TV set with a dish connection but no other middle-class items like washing machine, fridge, scooter etc.

I asked him whether he gets time for leisure or whether he likes to travel etc. He said he isn’t much of a traveler. They go to their native place near Unnao, UP during the summer months when most of the students and staff at IIT are not present at the campus. I asked whether they owned land to which he said no they didn’t have enough savings for that, they don’t own land even in their native place. I asked whether his life was comfortable to which he said that they are just being able to meet the ends. He rarely has much time for himself due to the long working hours. He says he hopes only to be able to provide for his kids’ studies for as long as he can so that they have better living conditions. I asked would 25000/- a month earnings be enough to lead a comfortable life to which he replied that yes, it would be significantly better than the present conditions. I asked how do they cope during situations of illness, emergencies etc. and he said that its difficult for them to at that time because all their savings get used up then and so they don’t have much savings. I asked whether he was happy or satisfied with his present life, and although in the picture below he did manage to give a smile at the request of a photograph, he said it’s far from a happy situation as he’s just being able to meet the ends, works from morning to evening – goes home-eats-sleeps and then again returns to work in the morning.
