LETTER FROM VEISHEA GENERAL CO-CHAIRS

On behalf of the VEISHEA Executive Board and Committee Members, welcome to VEISHEA 2013!

We are excited to welcome each of you as our guests to the 91st annual VEISHEA celebration! We proudly present to you a few original additions to those time-honored traditions we all know and love. Please read on to learn how you may partake in our numerous events and make the most of your time at Iowa State University.

We invite you all to experience your favorite VEISHEA traditions including VEISHEA Village and Campus Showcase, Stars Over VEISHEA, and the highly anticipated VEISHEA Parade. Some changes have been made this year to enhance your experience and truly highlight the students, faculty, staff, and community members who contribute their time and creativity to our valued celebration. We have incorporated Kids’ Corner, an event for children with face painting, a magician, and food. You will also notice increased involvement from the Colleges here at ISU, as they display the activities of their departments and students.

Our gratitude is extended to the Executive Board members, sub-committees, and VEISHEA Corps members to whom we attribute the success of our beloved ISU tradition. Their hard work and dedication to Iowa State University and VEISHEA is incredible and we cannot thank them enough. We also owe a special thank you to our advisers, the ISU faculty and staff, alumni, and members of the Ames community for their continued support and commitment to VEISHEA. We look forward to you all joining us in celebrating this timeless tradition.

Thank you for joining us for VEISHEA 2013. Enjoy the celebration!

Hilary Morris & Rachel Owen, VEISHEA 2013 General Co-Chairs

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

Each year VEISHEA – a Timeless Tradition – ushers spring into Ames. This is the one time of year when all other activities come to a standstill while the nation’s largest student-run event delights people of all ages.

The Timeless Tradition brings the parade, cherry pies, VEISHEA scholars, and campus open houses. But, each year also brings something new and different. Most thrilling is the recognition of Iowa State’s diversity. Never can one eat so well as at the International Food Fair, and never can one see such talent as is on stage at Stars Over VEISHEA.

Whether you are an ISU alum, a parent, a prospective student, or a long-time Ames resident, we welcome you to this highlight of the year.

Sincerely yours,

Ann H. CampbellMayor

The story of Tevye, his wife, and five daughters that live in Tsarist Russia. He hopes to find fine husbands for each of his girls, men who will follow the Jewish faith and earn enough to make a comfortable life, but each young woman wants to make her own choice. Tevye finds himself placed in a precarious position between the tradition he follows and the new ways his daughters accept. A universal story of love, hope, and acceptance.

VEISHEA PARADE

HISTORYRain or shine the VEISHEA Parade is a tradition that has stood the test of

time. Beginning in 1922, parade floats were created by departments and clubs to showcase the work that their organizations do on Iowa State’s campus. The VEISHEA parade tradition has since grown to also include giant balloons, marching bands, and dancers. Motorcycles, convertibles, and farming and con-struction equipment will be among the entries this year.

Each year people from all over the Midwest gather on central campus to watch the floats and displays from people who help make Iowa State’s campus and the Ames community an incredible place to live. Crowds of nearly 75,000 attendees have been recorded in past years. Recently, the parade has been filmed and broadcast on television for those Iowa State alum who cannot make it back to campus to watch.

A lot of work goes into planning a perfect parade. Staging and preparing floats can take place as early as ten hours before the parade events. From the hours spent building floats to picking the Grand Marshal and dignitaries, a team of parade volunteers works tirelessly to make sure the event goes off without a hitch.

So come experience one of Iowa State’s great traditions, and maybe you’ll get some free candy along the way!

PARADE GRAND MARSHAL I Jonathan WickertThis year’s Grand Marshal is Iowa State University’s Senior Vice President

and Provost, Jonathan Wickert. Having such a prominent figure from the university serve as the Grand Marshal truly shows just how much VEISHEA means to Iowa State. As Senior Vice President and Provost, Wickert oversees the university’s academic programs and is responsible for planning, budgeting, diversity programs, information technology initiatives, and the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Wickert is a Professor of Me-chanical Engineering here at Iowa State. He received his B.S., M.S., and PhD. Degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. In his free time you can catch him listening to country music and classic rock or watching any of the Star Wars movies. Wickert’s favorite memories at ISU include kissing his wife under the campanile, walking around the Zodiac, and, of course, walking in the VEISHEA parade!
