    OBJECTIVE

To conduct human factors evaluations of: 1) entry/egress, and 2) usservice/maintenance functional features related to engine and trunkcompartmentsin a car, van, truck or a sports utility vehicle.

The objectives of this study is to use methods of observation andcommunication (interview) to evaluate several tasks and suggest proimprovements to reduce and eliminate problems and errors.

    PROCEDURE:

Six drivers(4 male height ranging from 5.9 to 6.2 in

ranging from 5.3 to 5.8 in) were asked to perfothe three tasks. Drivers were observed and tcomplete each task was recorded.

The task was carefully monitored by our teafeedback of the subjects were noted down

All problems, errors, and comments were recordtask.

Drivers were asked to rate each task on a scale o

    (10 = extremely easy, 1 = extremely hard).

The data was collected for discussion and impro

    Evaluation questionnaire:

    1. Appropriate height of outside door handle and location( close to the dopening)?

    2. Proper handle grasp & clearance for all drivers(in all conditions)?3. Is it easy to open the door or more effort is required?

    4. Space available for the driver to slide into the seat?

    Watched out for:

    1. Ease of reaching the door handle, awkward hand angles, excessive heease of getting in the car.

    Evaluation on scale:

    10-point scale (10 = Very Easy and 1 = Very Difficult)

    IMPROVEMENTS FOR TASK - 3

Gooseneck hinges intrude into the trunk area. Hydraulic lift gate should beprovided.

backlight should be attached with trunk for more excessive space to load& unload big heavy bags.

More pockets should be provided for accessories like umbrellas.

Automatic trunk opening would be a nice feature.

When the horizontal loading distance is high & inevitable a flat support hasto be provided to slide the heavy bags or else the bags have to be lifted

    entirely to load & unload.
