ResistanceThe ability of a plant variety to restrict the growth and development of a specified pest or diseaseand/or the damage they cause when compared to susceptible varieties under similar environmentalconditions and/or pest or disease pressure. Resistant varieties may exhibit some disease symptomsor damage under heavy pest or disease pressure. Two levels of resistance are defined:

High resistance (HR)Plant varieties that restrict the growth and development of the specifiedpest or disease under normal pest or disease pressure when compared to susceptible varieties.These plant varieties may, however, exhibit some symptoms or damage under heavy pest orpathogen pressure.

Intermediate resistance (IR)Plant varieties that restrict the growth and development of thespecified pest or disease, but may exhibit a greater range of symptoms when compared to highlyresistant varieties. Intermediately resistant plant varieties will still show less severe symptoms ordamage than susceptible plant varieties when grown under similar environmental conditions and/or pest or disease pressure.

Tolerance (T)Ability of a variety to sustain stress without serious consequences for growth, aspects and yield.
