Vegas Viking members invaded the Sons of Eyre Parade in Henderson, Nevada. photos: terry Baillargeon
March 11, 2017 celebrated an early St. Patrick’s Day in Henderson with a great carnival, music, and a fantastic
parade. Our lodge entered the parade with our Viking Ship, Ormen Korte. The smiling faces within the ship
belied the ferocious Viking Warrior who was the point man for this Deja Voux invasion of Irish Water (Street).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! GRATULERER MED DAGEN!!

Minutes from our Vegas Viking Membership meeting on March 2, 2017
The meeting was held at Christ Lutheran Church fellowship hall, 111 N. Torrey Pines, Las Vegas, Nevada. At
6:30, members led us in singing Norwegian grace; we enjoyed dinner from
6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Bob Sturgeon, president, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. We sang the American
national anthem. Bob welcomed 35 members; there were no guests.
FINANCIAL: There was no treasurer’s report since Andy Agan, Jr., our treasurer, is out of town.
BUDGET: Bob Sturgeon went over the budget which had been proposed by the board. Warren Halvorson
proposed that the budget be accepted; seconded by Bonnie McDaniel. Passed unanimously.
25TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY: Karen Holien, Chairman, asked that everyone who plans to attend to send in
their registration. She said that our International Director and his wife and many District 6 officers are coming.
We have received many items for our silent auction: many gift cards for restaurants and attractions, Celine
Dionne tickets, a set of Norwegian dinnerware, and many more. Char Brekke, an old friend of Karen’s, is one
of the Brekke Tours and Travel family and provided an excellent travel discount. The next meeting of the
committee will be held at Karen’s home at 7:00 p.m. on March 19. Everyone is welcome to attend. Rick Senzig
is working on a slideshow. Please send him pictures to be included. The Groves are chairs of the Heritage Table.
Dress is business casual (the Internet has several examples of business casual).
MEMBERSHIP: Karen Holien, Membership Secretary, presented a 10-year pin to Bee Belzone. Maureen
Anderson and Bob Sturgeon each received a $5 Smith’s gift card for signing up a new member.
FUTURE EVENTS: The Henderson libraries have asked us to participate in their “Around the World in 30
Days International Festival” again this year. We will be participating at the Gibson Library and the Green Valley
Library. The Viking ship and people in costume will join the festivities at the Gibson Library, and Vegas Viking
will give a lefse demo at the Green Valley Library.
Suzan Sibert said that Vegas Viking members, in costume, will participate in the R. E. Tobler Elementary School
multi-cultural night on March 15 from 5-7 p.m. Some of the members will give presentations and talk to the
students. The school is located at 6510 Buckskin Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada.
MEMBER SEMINAR: Bob Sturgeon announced that Vegas Viking will host a member seminar for District 6
lodges on March 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., just east of Grand Canyon
Drive. We will serve food and drinks and provide utensils, paper products, etc. for attendees. Maureen Anderson,
as Social Secretary, is coordinating the food. All Sons of Norway members are welcome to attend. There is no
charge.
On Sunday, March 12, Vegas Viking Lodge #152, in
association with Clark County gave us an opportunity to
share the music of Gretchen Hull with the community at
Winchester Cultural Center.
Erik Pappa, our public relations coordinator was
instrumental in arranging for this piano concert by this
renowned musician, who is a Temple University
(Philadelphia) Doctoral fellow.
Her concert included works by Edvard Grieg, David
Monrad Johansen, and Geir Tveitt, Christian Sinding,
Fartein Valen, Harold Saeverud, as well as other classical
composers, many with Norwegian family backgrounds.
This young pianist is lovely, talented, energetic, and
committed to excellence. Her timing and accentuated
portrayals of movement and emotions are unique
Takk! Gretchen Hull, Vegas Vikings, and Clark County.

SYTTENDE MAI, 2017
Vikki Renneckar, President of Desert Troll, and Dave Nelson gave a presentation on their Syttende Mai
celebration which took place in Bicentennial Park in Boulder City last year on May 17, 2016. Desert Troll always
holds their picnic on whatever day May 17th falls each year. They urged our lodge to participate with them this
year which will make the celebration even better than last year’s. They were gratified at the large turnout for
their Scandinavian Festival. The Boulder City High School band played the Norwegian National Anthem, and the
event featured old-time cars, a raffle, a parade, free food, games, and a bounce house. Secretary of State,
Barbara Cegavske, who is part Norwegian, was the guest of honor. She spoke to the crowd and rode in a 1947
Lincoln Continental in the parade. Vikki would like help with publicizing the event from our lodge.
Vegas Viking Lodge President, Bob Sturgeon, will ask our membership to vote at a later meeting to see if we
would like to participate jointly.
The Henderson libraries have asked Vegas Viking Lodge to participate in their “Around the World in 30
Days, International Festival” again this year.
• On April 8, Vegas Vikings will be participating at the Gibson Library, 100 – West Lake Mead
Parkway, Henderson, NV from 10 am to 2pm, and will feature Norwegian Vikings and Maidens in
Viking Bunads and gear. Weather permitting Our Viking ship, Ormen Korte, will be there.
• And on Saturday, April 29 at 11am – 12 noon, Vegas Vikings will be at Green Valley Library at
2797 – North Green Valley Parkway, Henderson, NV. Our Viking ship and people in bunads and
gear will share their Norwegian and Viking culture. Vegas Vikings will give a lefse demo at the
Green Valley Library.
All these events are positive modeling by our lodge members for young people and adults in our
communities. As always, we need volunteers to dress as Vikings and in bunads and to man the oars and the
presentation tables. Everyone is welcome to assist Rory Raymond as she rolls and fries Lefse … O yummy!

We love them!! Thank you all so much for saving the box tops and sending to us. They have really been beneficial for our school. While the program continues for collecting box tops we will be taking advantage of what they offer. Once again thank you for taking the time to collect box tops!! Suzan Sibert, Box Tops for Vegas Viking Lodge
Tubfrim update Thanks to everyone who continues to save stamps for Tubfrim. During February, we had 35 donations in the mail.
Two boxes of stamps were packed and sealed on March 20th for Tubfrim. The boxes weighed in at 12 lbs. each and then a 4-pound stamp collection. Thanks to May Edmondson for her assistance with clipping and sorting of stamps. Suzan Sibert, Tubfrim Committee

Scholarship Keep reminding the high school seniors and college students who share your
Norwegian family roots to send in their scholarship application. The deadline is coming at the end of Spring Break on April 15th. And The scholarship application can be found online on our website,
thanks to Lollo Sievert. Suzan Sibert, Scholarship Committee
Membership Notes: Thanks to the members who gave of their time for the Multi-Cultural night at
R. E. Tobler Elementary School on March 15th. Vikings in costume: Maureen Anderson, Sally Eldredge, Chuck Grove, Erik Pappa, Richard Senzig, Arlon Sibert and Bob Sievert.
A very special thanks to Sally for putting the strawberry jam and powdered sugar on over 200 heart waffles and to my sorority sister, Donna Bond, dishing up 200 servings of Riskrem. I was glad we didn't run out of waffles and Riskrem as we did last year our first time to attend the event! A Big Thank You to Douglas and Vicdan Kittelson for coming to display, tell about Turkey and serve homemade Turkey food! I really appreciate everyone for coming out for a short time on a Wednesday evening. Suzan Sibert, Library aide, R. E. Tobler Elementary School
25th Anniversary Slide Show Rick Senzig has volunteered to compile pictures of our 25-year history for a slide show loop at our Anniversary Dinner. Please check your collections, especially for activities from the early years of the lodge. You can e-mail pictures to [email protected] if you have the capability to do so. Or just bring pictures to the meetings in the next couple of months and he will scan them for the presentation. He would also be able to scan your hard copy pictures. April will be here before we know it. An exciting membership story is that fifteen current members will be receiving their twenty-five year pins at our Anniversary Dinner. This means that they are all Charter Members and have been with the Vegas Viking Lodge for the whole history of the group! In addition, four other members had belonged to Sons of Norway prior to our formation, but they are still charter members. We sincerely hope that all nineteen of these members will attend the Anniversary dinner for special recognition. I'm sure that we would all be astounded if we could add up all the dedicated hours of work that these nineteen people have given to our lodge. (see page 7)
Please note: there is a new e-mail address for submissions to the newsletter: [email protected]. The old e-mail: [email protected], will also route communications to my attention during this transition. Thank you; Editor
