VAL leverages its accessibility to cheap , skilled labor and vast captive mineral resources to work out a
favourbaly low production cost structure. This is in line with Vedanta Resources objective of claming a
postiton in the top decile of global low cost aluminium producers. VALs diversified and de-risked project
development stratergy and its fully integrated organizational structure, which included mining to
smelting/refining and power generation, equips it to meet the growing global and doestic demand for
aluminium
Various reports confirm, India is positioned to become largest producer of aluminium globally , with the
worlds 6th largest reserves of bauxite and the 4th largest reserves of coal. A large share of these reserves
are located in the state of Orissa. Vedantas existing presence in the region, together with its excellent
track record of executing projects ahead of time and at low capital cost, makes it ideally placed to lead
the development of these abundant bauxite and coal reserves.
Vedanta Aluminium Ltd. Has carved out a niche for itself in the aluminium industry with its superior
product quality based on state-of-the art-technology.The firm operates 1 mpta green field alumina
refinery and an associated 75 MW captive power plant at Lanjigarh in the state of odisha.{;ans are afoot
to increase the capacity od the Lanjigarh as a self sustained manufacturing unit in terms os cost
advantage and resource availability.
VAL has invested in a .5 mpta aluminium smelter and 1215 MW captive power plant supported by highly
modern infrastructure at Jharsaguda Orissa. In addition to this 1.1 mtpa aluminium smelter expansion
project, its SEZ unit at Jharsaguda is also under project phase
Jharsaguda is also the site of the 2400 MW independent power plant being set up by the sister wing
sterilite energy ltd to meet the growing demand for the power for both urban and rural consumers.
The Vedanta Aluminium Smelter Plant 1
In keeping with its objective to establish itself as a global player in the aluminium industry , Vedanta
Aluminium Ltd(VAL) has invested heavily in expanding its existing refining and smelting capacities. The
firm is a supplier of high quality metallurgical alumina and aluminium products to a wide spectrum of
industries and intends to enhance its domestic and global foot prints through a carefully coordinated
expansion stratergy.
Phase 1 of the smelter plant at Jharsaguda has a capacity of 0.5mpta. The first pot (Pot No 105) of plant
1 smelter was started in 21st March 2008. Smelter plant 1 meets the high quality standards andadvanced technical specifications od British Standard Institute thereby making it an ISO 14001, ISO
18001 certified unit. VAL had adopted Integrated management system to implement all three standards.
Different operational areas include Green Anode Plant,Bake Oven, Rodding Shop, Plot lines, cast house,
Laboratory, rectifier utility and ETP & STP. The plant offers a dynamic product portofolio of ingots,
billets,wire rods and functions under the brand name Vedanta, which is registered with London Stock
Exchange/

VAL Plant 1 has installed captive power plant of capacity 135 * 9 units = 1215 MW supported by highly
modern technology to meet the requirmnet of power for smelter 1.
VAL J is about to start its SEZ unit which has a capacity of 1.25 mpta. It is in the commissioning stage
To meet global technology benchmarks VAL has roped in M/s Qutotec for Roding and GAP, GAMI is the
technology supplier of Pot room Other major suppliers are ECL< Befasa,ABB and Siemens
Jharsaguda is also the site of the 2400 MW independent Power plant being setup by Sterilite energy Ltd
to meet the growing demands of power sector
