Espectácular edificio, diseñado por Santiago Calatrava, degran vistosidad vanguardista. Primer elemento arquitectónico

de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. En su interior albergauna gran sala de exhibición de planetario, y cine de grandes di-mensiones sobre pantalla semicircular de 24 metros de diáme-tro. Se dan proyeccione en sesiones de mañana y tarde.

This spectacular building, designed by Santiago Calatrava, isimpressively avant-garde. It is the first architectural element

of the City of Arts and Sciences. Inside, it houses a largeplanetarium exhibition area, and a huge cinema projected onto asemi-circular screen which measures 24 metres in diameter.There are morning and afternoon showings.

An enormous building designed by Santiago Calatrava, its40,000 meters makes it the largest science museum in

Spain. The interactive facilities in many of its exhibits are its mostoutstanding characteristic. The latest advances in science, newtechnologies and the mysteries of the universe and life itself areits main subjects. The huge Foucault pendulum is noteworthy,and there are interesting experimental workshops for children.

3. PLAZA DE LA VIRGEN

Es el centro de la antigua ciudad bimilenaria, donde se encuentran losdos edificios religiosos más significativos de la ciudad: la Catedral y la

Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, patrona de Valencia. Cons-truida esta última en el siglo XVII, de planta elíptica y grandiosa cúpula,pintada al fresco por Palomino. También colinda a esta plaza, la más em-blemática de Valencia, la Casa Vestuario, del siglo XVIII, formando contodo ello el conjunto histórico más hermoso de la ciudad antigua.

This is the centre of the old quarter, two thousand years old, where thetwo most important religious buildings of the city are to be found: the

Cathedral and Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken, the patron saint ofValencia. The latter was built in the 17th century, is of an elliptcal design,and has a grandiose dome, painted in fresco by Palomino. Also on thissquare, which is the most significant in Valencia, is the 18th centuryWardrobe House, which completes the most beautiful group of historicalbuildings in the old quarter.

PLAZA MANISESRecayente a la parte porterior del Palacio de laGeneralidad. En ella se encuentran los bellos pa-lacios góticos del siglo XVI, el de la Baylía, sedede la Diputación Provincial, y el Palau dels Scala.

THE ALMUDIN.In the street of the same name, this was an old grain store, anddates from the 16th century. Restored as a place for temporary artexhibitions. Its main entrance is on the attractive little San LuisBeltran Square, where the beautiful Gothic Escriva Palace is to befound.

THE GENERALITAT PALACE.—Seat of the Valencian Court of theancient Kingdom of Valencia. It is now the home of the Presidential Officesand Council of the Valencian autonomous government. Built in the 14th and15th centuries in a Mediterranean Gothic style. Magnificent Renaissancegilded stuccoed ceiling in the Court Chamber and the Gold Room are of greatornamental richness.

MANISES SQUARELies behind the Generalitat Palace. Here, beautifulGothic palaces of the 16th century can be found,along with the Baylia Palace, seat of the ProvincialDelegation, and the Scala Palace.

4. EL MIGUELETE

Es la torre-campanario de la Catedral, de estilo gótico del si-glo XIV y forma octogonal, con setenta metros de altura y tre-

ce campanas. Se puede subir a su terraza, donde se encuentrasu principal campana, accediendo, por una escalera de caracolde 200 peldaños, desde el interior de la catedral. El nombre deMiguelete, o Micalet (en valenciano), proviene del que tiene sucampana mayor Micaela (Miguela), que pesa 10.000 kilos.

This, the bell tower of the Cathedral, is in a 14th century Gothicstyle and of octagonal shape. It is 70 meters high, and has 13

bells. The balcony where the main bell is located can be visitedby means of a spiral staircase of 200 steps which starts insidethe Cathedral. The name Miguelete/Michaelet (or Micalet inValencian) given to the tower derives from the fact that its mainbell, which weighs 10,000 kilos, is called Michaela (Miguela).

PALACIO DEL ALMIRANTEEl más completo y mejor conserva-do palacio medieval valenciano. Her-moso patio de estilo gótico del sigloXV. Situado en la calle del Palau.

BAÑOS DEL ALMIRANTEBaños árabes del siglo XII o XIII, restaurados recientemente. Único mo-numento musulmán conservado en Valencia. Hamam o baño de vapor ensalas abovedadas con lucernas estrelladas. Se le llama del Almirante porencontrarse adosado a la parte posterior del Palacio del Almirante.

QUEEN SQUAREThis, together with the Virgin and Almoina Squares, is the main square adjacentto the Cathedral. The main stopping-off place for any sightseeing tour of thehistorical centre. The tourist buses, and horses and carts, leave from here. Thebest views of The Michaelet Tower, emblem monument of the city, are from here.

THE ADMIRAL’S PALACEThe most complete and best preservedMedieval Valencian palace. Has apretty 15th century courtyard in theGothic style. Located in Palau Street.

THE ADMIRAL’S BATHSArabic baths of the 12th or 13th centuries, recently restored. The onlysurviving Islamic remains in Valencia. A Hamam, or steam bath, invaulted rooms with star shaped skylights. They are called the Admiral’sbaths because they are adjacent to the back of the Admiral’s Palace.

5. LA CATEDRAL THE CATHEDRAL

Construida entre los siglos XIII, XIV y XV, bajo la advocación de Santa María, en el lu-gar de la antigua mezquita musulmana. Recoge diferentes estilos arquitectónicos. Así,

cada una de sus tres puertas es de un estilo diferente. La puerta del Palau, recayente ala plaza de la Almoina, de estilo románico; la de los Apóstoles, recayente a la plaza de laVirgen, de estilo gótico; y la de los Hierros, barroca, en la plaza de la Reina. En su inte-rior destaca el cimborrio con cristalería de piedra de alabastro; el retablo mayor, con pin-turas de Yanez de Almedina y Hernando de Llanos. Lo más excepcional es su capilla delSanto Cáliz, donde se encuentra el legendario Santo Grial de la última cena de Jesucris-to. En el Museo Catedralicio se exhibe la monumental Custodia del Corpus Christi, extra-ordinaria obra de orfebrería. Así como lienzos de Macip, Joan de Joanes y dos Goya.

Built between the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, and dedicated to St. Mary, it is on thesite of an old Muslim mosque. Various different architectural styles are represented,

thus, for example, each of its three doorways is in a different style. The Palau doorway,which leads onto Almoina Square, is in the Romanesque style; the Apostles doorway,which leads onto Virgin Square, is in the Gothic style; and the Irons doorway, on QueenSquare, is Baroque. Of note in the interior are the dome with alabaster stone reliefs, andthe large altarpiece with paintings by Yanez de Almedina and Hernando de Llanos. Mostexceptional is the Holy Grail Chapel, where the legendary Holy Grail of Jesus Christ’s lastsupper is to be found. The Cathedral Museum houses the huge Custody of Christ’s Body,an extraordinary piece of metalwork. There are also paintings by Macip, Joan de Joanesand two Goyas.

PLAZA DE LA ALMOINA.—Valioso conjunto monumental,constituido, en primer lugar, por el recinto arqueológico de la primiti-va Valentia, fundada en el año 138 a.d.C. por el Consul romano Dé-cimo Junio Bruto, con restos de época romana, visigótica e islámi-ca. También, por dos pequeñas portadas de capillas visigóticas. Unade las cuales fue cárcel del martiro de San Vicente, patrón de la ciu-dad, a cuyo interior subterráneo, la cripta o capilla funeraria, se pue-de visitar, y ver un audiovisual, entrando por la plaza del Arzobispo.En donde además se halla el Palacio de Berbedel o Museo de la Ciu-dad, y enfrente el Palacio Arzobispal.Y en último lugar, cierra el con-junto, la Casa del Punt de Ganxo, de principios del siglo XX, con lla-mativa fachada de ornamentación modernista-naturalista.

ALMOINA SQUARE.—An important group of sights,consisting, firstly, of the archaeological remains of ancient Valentia,founded in the year 138 BC by the Roman Consul Decimus JuniusBrutus, with Roman, Visigothic and Islamic remains. Also of notefor two small Visigothic chapel doorways. On of them was theprison of Saint Vincent the martyr, patron saint of the city. Theunderground interior, the crypt or funeral chapel, can be visited,entering by Archbishop Square, and there is an audiovisualpresentation. Also here are the Berbedel Palace, or City Museum,and in front, the Archbishop’s Palace. Finally, finishing off thegroup, there is the early 20th century Punt de Ganxo House, witha noteworthy façade of Modernist and naturalistic decoration.

THE WATERTRIBUNALThe ancient irrigationcourt for the areas irrigated by the eight canals of theValencian plain is convened every Thursday in the year,at 12 noon precisely. The judgements, in whichsentence is legally passed, and the proceedings ofwhich are entirely oral, are declared in front of theApostles Doorway of the Cathedral, in order to resolveadministrative offences resulting from the distributionand use of water in the canals. It is the oldest survivinglegal institution in Europe.

TRIBUNAL DE LASAGUASEl milenario jurado de riegosde las ocho comunidades ace-quieras de la Vega de Valenciacelebra todos los jueves delaño, a las 12 en punto, juiciospúblicos de derecho consetu-dinario y procedimiento oralsumarísimo, delante de laPuerta de los Apóstoles de laCatedral, para resolver las in-fracciones administrativas de-rivadas de la distribución y usodel agua de las acequias. Es lainstitución de justicia más anti-gua que existe hoy en Europa.

6. TORRES DE SERRANOS

Espléndida puerta gótica de las antiguas murallas de la ciu-dad, contruida íntegramente con piedra de sillería, por Pere

Balaguer, en el siglo XIV. Se puede visitar subiendo hasta lo másalto de sus almenas. Estos torreones defensivos, eran la princi-pal entrada a la ciudad de cara a las comarcas del interior, losSerranos. De ahí su nombre.

Amagnificent Gothic gateway in the former city walls, builtentirely in ashlar masonry by Pere Balaguer in the 14th

century. It can be visited, right up to the highest battlements.These defensive towers were the main entrance to the city forthose who lived in the surrounding lands facing it called TheSerranos, hence its name.

MUSEO BENLLIUREAuténtica casa burguesa del siglo XIX, de la fami-lia Benlliure, sita en la calle Blanquerías, ciudado-samente ambientada, recreada y repleta de pintu-ras de José Benlliure y su hijo Peppino. Destaca eltaller del pintor y el cuidado jardín romántico.

PORTAL DE VALLDIGNAEn la calle del mismo nombre.Puerta de la muralla árabe me-dieval de acceso a la morería,de 1400. Arco de sillares demedio punto.

THE ROCAS HOUSELocated in the street of the same name, where the rocasare kept, which are very old carriages for the CorpusChristi procession in Valencia. All of the processionalitems are kept here, such as giants and giant heads,making it a real Corpus Christi museum.

19TH CENTURY MUSEUMLocated in the former CarmenConvent, in Museum Street, itpossesses Renaissance and Gothicstyle cloisters. Houses importantnineteenth century paintings.

THE BENLLIURE MUSEUM. A genuine 19thcentury middle class house, of the Benlliure family,located in Blanquerias Str. It has been decorated withgreat care, and is full of paintings by Jose Benlliureand his son Peppino. Noteworthy are the painter’sworkshop and the well-kept romantic garden.

VALLDIGNA GATEWAYIn the street of the same name. Adoorway in the medieval Arabicwalls giving access to the old Arabicquarter, it dates from 1400. A semi-circular arch of ashlar masonry.

SERRANOS TOWERS

7. TORRES DE QUART

Al igual que las Torres de Serranos, es una antigua puerta de laciudad amurallada, edificada en el siglo XV por Pere Bonfill, y si-

tuada en la calle Guillén de Castro. En su fachada todavía puedenverse los impactos de la artillería napoleónica, en la guerra de 1808contra los franceses. Estatua del Palleter, héroe de esta contienda.

Like the Serranos Towers, this is an old gateway in the city walls,built in the 15th century by Pere Bonfill, and located in Guillem de

Castro Street. Traces of the impact of Napoleonic artillery from thewar of 1808 against the French can still be seen in its façade. Statueof the Palleter, popular Valencian hero of this contest.

En el sótano se encuentra laSala de la Muralla en la que se conserva unlienzo de la antigua muralla de Valencia.

LA BENEFICENCIA. Es el Centro Cul-tural de la Beneficencia, que alberga principal-mente el Museo de Prehistoria. Del Paleolíticoa la época romana, en la Comunidad Valen-ciana. Valiosas muestras de la cultura ibérica.Destaca el Apolo de Pinedo, y el Guerrero deMoixent. El salón de actos es una antigua igle-sia de estilo bizantino. En la calle Corona.

BARRIO DEL CARMEN. El Carme, en valenciano. Es el ba-rrio más famoso de la Ciutat Vella. Forma parte de la laberíntica Mo-rería medieval, cristianizada con la influencia de Convento del Car-men, de ahí su nombre. Un barrio en permanente rehabilitación yreforma, con explosiva vida nocturna, debido a su infinidad de baresde copas, pubs y tabernas instalados en sus viejas y estrechas ca-lles. Los puntos neurálgicos están en las calles Alta, plaza San Jai-me y del Tossal. Hasta las palaciegas de Caballeros y del Negrito.

BOTANICAL GARDENSFrom 1802, it was the first botanicalgarden in Spain. It belongs to theUniversity of Valencia, and containsthousands of species and varieties.It has the best collection of palmtrees in Europe, and unusualgreenhouses. In Quart Street.

IVAM. The Valencian Institute of ModernArt. From 1984. Located in Guillem de CastroStreet. Works by Julio González, EquipoCrónica, Genovés, Saura, Tápies, Chillida,Miró, Eduardo Arroyo, Ignacio Pinazo.17,000 square meters. In the basement thereis the City Wall Room, where there is acanvas of the old city walls of Valencia.

THE BENEFICENCIA. This is theBeneficencia Cultural Centre, which houses,mainly, the Valencian Prehistory Museum,that covers the Palaeolithic to the Romaneras. Valuable token of Iberian Culture. Ofnote are the Apollo of Pinedo, and the Warriorof Moixent. The events area is an old churchbuilt in the Byzantine style. In Corona Street.

THE CARMEN QUARTER. It is the best known area of theOld City, and formed part of the labyrinthine medieval Arabic quarter,Christianised by the influence of the Carmen Convent, from which itderives its name. A neighbourhood undergoing constant rebuildingand restoration. It has a very lively nightlife, due to endless numberof bars, pubs and taverns to be found in its old and narrow streets.The main hotspots are Alta Street, San Jaime Square and TossalSquare, and up to Caballeros and Negrito palatial courtyards.

por la Unesco Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad. Construida en el siglo XVpor Pere Compte, por orden del Consell i Jurats de la Ciutat (Ayuntamiento) ypor encargo de los mercaderes valencianos de la seda, como casa de contra-taciones, sede del Tribunal del Consulado del Mar y de la Taula de Canvis, en-tidad bancaria valenciana fundada en 1418. Con la desaparición de la industriade la seda y el terciopelo, pasó a ser centro de contratación agrícola, principal-mente naranjera. Hoy día solo queda de su uso mercantil un mercado de sellosy monedas que se celebra los domingos por las mañana. Destaca sobre todo elgran Salón Columnario, con 24 columnas helicoidales de 17 metros de altura.Yla Sala del Consulado del Mar, con techunbre de artesonados dorados y poli-cromados, procedentes del antiguo Consejo de la Ciudad, no abierta al público.

This is one of the most important examples of a civic Gothic building in Spain,and one of the most beautiful examples of Flamboyant Gothic in the whole

Mediterranean region. It was declared by Unesco as a World Heritage of Mankindsite. Built in the 15th century by Pere Compte, by order of the Council and Membersof the Town Hall City Council, and by order of the silk merchants of Valencia. It wasa commodity exchange, the seat of the Maritime Consulate Tribunal, and theExchange Table, a Valencian banking institution founded in 1418. With thedisappearance of the silk and velvet industry, it became an agricultural trade hall,mainly for oranges. Nowadays, the only remnant of its mercantile past is a stampand coin market that is held on Sunday mornings. Of special note is the greatColumn Hall, with its 24 helicoidal columns, 17 meters high. Also, the MaritimeConsulate Room, with a gilded stuccoed ceiling with polychrome sculptures, whichcomes from the old Town Council Chamber, and is not open to the public.

With the great expansion of the Port of Valencia in recent decades, theinterior docks have stopped being a commercial port, in order to

become the home setting for the Americas Cup for sailing boats, which willtake place in 2007. TheClock Building and the hangars with impressive ceramic decoration byDemetrius Ribes, are jewels of Modernist architecture.

20. MUSEO FALLERO

Las Fallas son las fiestas más importantes de Valencia. Con-sisten en quemar, por toda Valencia, cientos de monumentos

de cartón, instalados en medio de la calle, de 3 a 20 metros dealtura cada uno. Se queman como acto de purificación y renova-ción. Sólo un muñeco o ninot se indulta del fuego cada año, porvotación popular. Éste es el que se guarda en el Museo Fallero.No existe en el mundo otro museo igual.
