Vol. : XXVI July 15, 2019 IV

Welcome back dear readers

It's been exactly two and a half months since

we've spoken to you as we all were holidaying in

our respective cocoons.

But the sand in the hourglass appears to have

drifted faster than ever. With homework, family

evenings, vacations , lemonades and a lot of fun

this most awaited part of the schooling year has

come to end. “Student's discount and Back to

school supplies” became the clickbaits for the

shopping hubs and sites in the second half of the

June month. And we are back yet again beating

the intense summer heat with all our might and

hoping to extract the best from the year ahead.

Hope everyone enjoyed the vacations with kith

and kin as much as I did.

Much has happened in this seemingly short

duration. With each passing day, we have

certainly improved at least a speck of this tiny

little world thanks to all those who kept engaged

in one fruitful activity or the other.

The corridors of 'our home away from home'

Editorialall. Prayers from across the globe have been

reaching there. Hope things will come back to

normalcy soon, by God's grace.

Acclimatizing to an environment other than our

home is definitely a mammoth task but I'm sure

that by now, everyone has finally adapted to the

schedule of our tiny world. The dreadful regulars

like the morning PTs and UTs have returned as

nightmares while we are still struggling with

restraining ourselves from stretching our rest

hours. I hope all of us are back on track (and field)

soon.

And coming to the most exciting bit at last;

finally the time has arrived for the new

Prefectorial Board to take charge. All the best to

all the contestants of 'VDJS Justice League

2019'. We certainly hope to scale many more

milestones with our chosen leaders in this

academic year. Here's looking forward to 'Achhe

Din'.

Welcome Back everyone once again!

Investitures' to JAF, we'll rock it all, again with

double dedication and triple zest.

Hope you all enjoy this edition and keep waiting

for the next issue which will come out in a new

avatar.

were abuzz with teachers' workshop sessions and

annual maintenance work. The sight of the AC

to be gradually taking its grand shape.

On the national front while the election results

In the global arena the major tragedy faced by

of the citizens were killed, raped and tortured.

Visit toNORWAY SWEDEN My visit to Sweden & Norway had been an enriching experience as it provided me with an ample of learning opportunity that helped me immensely in gaining an insight into the educational policies and pedagogies of Swedish and Norwegian schools.

This experience has provided me with several ideas and practices that, if appropriately and wisely implemented in VDJS, will surely help the institution in gaining newer heights.

To summarize my learning outcomes, I would like to share the salient features of the various schools that I got a chance to visit.

The two schools that I visited in Stockholm, Sweden are Nya Elementary School (Private), and Satra School (Public).

Sätraskolan Stockholm, SwedenSätraskolan is an F-9 school located in southern Stockholm. At school there are 600 pupils in compulsory school and 32 pupils in special school. The unit has about 130 employees. The special school is integrated in the school. The School attaches great importance to good relationships with students and parents and manages the trust they have given them in the best possible way. The School has a very open and free environment and takes a lot of pride in its students for being responsible and disciplined.

Nya ElementarSkola, Stockholm, SwedenNew Elementar is an F-9 school located in Bromma - a district in western Stockholm. The proximity to nature and to the city center makes the school's location very attractive. New Elements has a long history but was reopened as a primary school in the autumn of 1999. In the fall of 2002 it moved into their newly renovated funkisskola school where the old details are preserved and mixed with the modern to function in a modern school. The students and their conditions are at the center of its work on developing safe, responsible people who find their own ways to conquer knowledge.

Salient features of these two schools:

Ÿ Encourage all students to discover their own unique qualities as individuals, to be able to participate fully in society.

Ÿ Goals and guidelines are set out in the Education Act, the curriculum and syllabuses. The choice of teaching material and methods are not regulated; these are left to individual school organizers to determine.

Ÿ National tests are compulsory at the end of Year 3, 6 and 9 and in upper secondary school.

Ÿ The National School Inspectorate inspects schools and makes sure they keep to all stipulated acts and regulations.

Ÿ Basically two path-ways: vocational and university preparatory.

Ÿ Wide range of programmes. “Introductory

programme” offered for students who didn't pass enough subjects in compulsory school.

Ÿ Young people in Sweden are often very independent and teachers in school encourage them to critical thinking.

Ÿ Access to free education, student aid and housing allowance provide real opportunities to choose their own way in life.

Ÿ The students' skills are developed that strengthens them as an individual so that they can be co-creator of a sustainable world.

Ÿ Digital competency is a national educational goal.

Ÿ The other two schools that I visited in Oslo, Norway are Sandvika High School and Ringstabekk lower secondary school.

Sandvika High SchoolOne of the most renowned school in Norway best known for their stress free learning environment. Sandvika is a modern high school that focuses on students who really want to get something positive out of schooling. First and foremost, it relates to knowledge and skills in the various subjects, but they also emphasize that the students get help in planning their own learning work. Once you complete the school you must be able to structure your own study work.

The program subjects are organized in subject days so that you have time for specialization in each subject. Subjects give teachers great opportunities for variation in teaching methods and make it easier to work with larger projects, go on excursions etc.

Salient Features:

Ÿ The use of Technology

Ÿ Block Scheduling

Ÿ Content Creators

Ÿ Student Voice

Ÿ The art of asking questions.

Ÿ Teaching with a Global Perspective

Ringstabekk School - The Open Spaced School, Oslo, NorwayOne of the most innovative schools in the world, Ringstabekk School near Oslo, Norway with around 450 students aged between 13-16 years has been following phenomena based project study approach for past 40 years. It all started in the 1970s when the teachers realized that their students were not truly engaged in what they learned at school. These educators were inspired by the Danish pedagogue KnudIlleris and his ideas of cross-curricular project work, and in the 1980s, the fundamental concept and organization of the school was revamped. Although the pedagogy of the school has been developing ever since, the basic idea of learning through multidisciplinary studies has endured. The school is popular for their project based and storyline learning approaches.

Salient Features:

Ÿ A holistic approach to learning

Ÿ Cross-curricular teaching and learning

Ÿ Relevance

Ÿ Lifelong skills, learning for life: Cooperation, Critical thinking, Communication, Problem- solving etc.

Ÿ Development, change, innovation

Ÿ A school based on "real"life, not on academic subjects

Cross-curricular Methods:

Ÿ Storyline

Ÿ Project work

Ÿ Problem-based learning

Ÿ Simulations

Ÿ Entrepreneurship

Ÿ Teaching Thinking-skills

Ÿ Factors of Success:

Ÿ Flexible teachers, willing to change (agreement on working-hours)

Ÿ Well-functioning, cooperating teams

Ÿ Unified teaching (pedagogical

The School reopened on the 8th of July after an almost two month long summer break. The staff and students are fresh

and energized as if solar charged by the hot weather. The repair, maintenance and upgradation of infrastructure was in

full swing all through the vacations and on return the girls were delighted to see new furniture in their classes. Of course

the installation of Air conditioners in the ground floor classrooms was another added bounty.

Looking forward to an action packed term.

Beyond learning the educational practices of these countries, the trip had a good share of fun moments and the opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of these two countries blessed with nature's bounty.

The special moments include the visit to the Norwegian Parliament where we had the pleasure of interacting with the MP, Mr Himanshu Gulati, the only Member of Parliament with the Indian origin in the Parliament of Norway. We were delighted to receive the participation certificate from Mr Gulati.

Another tourist attraction was Tønsberg and the End of the World.

In all, it was an enriching experience for me to understand that although today the educational concerns across the globe are similar, yet the levels at which various countries and schools are seeking solutions to face the challenges of the 21st century are very different and thus provides enough scope for learning from each other's best practices.

trekking. They braved extreme weather conditions with the night

temperatures at the campsite dipping to -9° Celsius. Even rain and mild

hail couldn't dampen the spirit of the girls as they unfurled the school

flag at “BAKKAR THATCH(3400m) which is the starting point of

Beas Kund. In addition to trekking girls also took part in rock-

climbing, rappelling, zip lining and river crossing. They also enjoyed

preparing a meal together. A day of leisure and luxury was also given to

the girls and they were taken to the Manali Mall Road. The entire

delegation worked beautifully as a team encouraging and motivating each other. They returned with deep appreciation for the sheer geographic diversity – from the verdant,

forested valleys to the flowered meadows (thatch) carpeted with wildflowers. They also explored the inexhaustible reserves of inner strength which they were unaware that they

possessed. The girls also enjoyed the view of the many snow-capped peaks such as Mt. Hanuman Tibba (5928M), Mt. Friendship (5289M), Mt. Shitidhar (5294M) & Mt.

Ladakhi (5342M) which they are determined to scale one day. Bitten by the adventure bug they are raring for a bigger challenge very soon. (Detailed report in next issue)
