Page 5: VCU Lambdas Status Packet 2013

My name is Alan Ngo and I am the current president of the Lambda Phi Epsilon chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University. I would like to take this opportunity to present the VCU Associate Chapter as a candidate chapter for Active Status. I strongly believe that we as a chapter are fit and ready to take on the responsibilities and duties of an active chapter and for many reasons: As a chapter, we have continued to produce accomplishments and host events that have benefitted the national fraternity as a whole since achieving Associate Status in 2010. In Spring 2011, we demonstrated our innovation and initiative as a chapter by creating and successfully hosting the first ever Southeast regional event, SouthernComfort. In the Spring of 2012, we demonstrated our capabilities and strength of a chapter by chartering 8 strong new brothers from James Madison University into eternal brotherhood. In Fall 2012, VCU hosted Southeast Junior Active Retreat for the second time since being chartered as a chapter, showing that VCU can continue to be a consistent and reliable chapter when it comes to hosting events. As a chapter, we have also continued to show a very healthy and consistent growth internally

as we have crossed classes every semester since we have been chartered, with the exception of Spring 2012 when we fully dedicated ourselves to chartering James Madison University as a Colony Chapter. As a result, VCU has produced 67 brothers after only 5 years of being established. With these statistics alone, VCU is undoubtedly one of the largest and fastest growing chapters in the Southeast region. On campus, we are without a doubt the largest fraternity in the Multicultural Greek Council at VCU. As a chapter we have also had a large impact on our campus through community service and leadership abilities as brothers. We have done numerous service events by volunteering at Richmond’s Children Museum, gathering donations for the Salvation Army during the holiday season, handing out water to runners in the annual Monument 10k, and cleaning up trash for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. On top of these service events and philanthropy, the brothers at VCU have continued to show their leadership abilities by taking on high leadership positions on campus. Aside from being leading executive board officers amongst the Asian organizations on campus, at least two brothers have always

been elected onto the executive board of VCU’s Multicultural Greek Council. This in part has led to VCU’s MGC to dominate the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) Awards for 4 years in a row. Since coming on to VCU as a chapter, brothers have won VCU’s Emerging Fraternity Leader of the Year Award 3 times: in 2009, 2010, and 2012. As an Associate Chapter, we have accomplished numerous achievements on our campus, in the Southeast region, and on a National level. As a chapter, we are eager and looking forward to hosting more regional and national events, aiding in the growth and expansion of the Southeast region, and holding larger events on campus. By granting us Active Status, not only would we make Nationals and every brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon proud to have VCU as an Active Chapter, but it would be an honor for us to continue proving just how much better of a chapter we can be in the future years to come.

In Eternal Brotherhood,

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATIONFROM FOUNDING FATHER

NEILMIYAZAKIMR.

I am very pleased and encouraged to see all the efforts and hard work of the Board and the members of Lambda Phi Epsilon. As you know, I have settled in Midlothian, Virginia and feel very fortunate to have relocated very near Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to our decision to relocate from Los Angeles to Richmond, VA in 2011, I had called upon some of the current members and alumni of the VCU Associate Chapter for information about the local area. Shortly after we arrived, I was given a tour of the area and had dinner with our local Lambda brothers. Over the last 2 years, I have been able to observe the VCU Associate Chapter’s activities as well as being invited to participate in their Founder’s Day dinners and recruitment events. These events are well attended and reminded me our early beginnings. It is my hope and recommendation as well, that the VCU Associate Chapter be granted full Chapter status and I look forward to watching their successful growth.

JOE VOLETTER OF RECOMMENDATIONFROM SOUTHEAST GOVERNOR

As the Southeast Governor 2012-2013 and Lt. Governor 2011-2012, I have worked closely with the Virginia Commonwealth University Chapter for a long time. I have also had the pleasure of working and hanging out with the brothers there since I crossed in 2008. The brothers of the VCU Associate Chapter exemplify the values of our great fraternity and serve as a great model for what our chapters should strive for. The VCU Associate Chapter has always concertedly crossed new members into the fraternity and has always kept a strong active house. While VCU is very reputable on their campus, they also have a strong reputation in the entire state of Virginia; this being evident in the fact that James Madison wanted a Lambda Phi Epsilon chapter on their campus because of the good publicity that VCU has brought to our fraternity. VCU is also well known to the brothers of the southeast by constantly visiting chapters and always welcoming brothers. They hosted the first Southeast Brotherhood Rally known as Southern Hospitality back in 2011 and JA in 2012.

Most importantly, the brotherhood at VCU is very strong. As I said earlier, I have known there brothers since I crossed in spring 2008 and saw them at least 3 times a semester; both in Richmond and Athens, an 8 hour road trip. They are always there for each other and always welcome brothers with open arms. I am proud to say that I have an extremely close relationship with these brothers. In conclusion, VCU is a central part in the southeast, the fastest growing region. I recommend that they be given active status and I know that if attained, they will continue to grow and prosper.

In Eternal Brotherhood,

2013 APPLICATION PACKET FOR ACTIVE STATUS 10

I am truly honored and privileged to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of the Virginia Commonwealth University Associate Chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon to receive Active Status. My personal belief is that Active Status is not merely a journey taken by a Chapter for a semester or year, but that it is the accumulation of a Chapter’s actions and development from the day it was chartered and founded. Active Status is a special honor and privilege given to a Chapter that can show that they can and will continue to operate as an optimal chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity. With that said, I firmly believe that Virginia CommoNwealth University (VCU) is one such chapter. VCU is not a chapter that is found itself thrust upon any special or easy route; they have endured the same challenges and struggles that every chapter faces, along with problems unique to their individual chapter. However, as a chapter they have continually faced adversity

head on and have proven to become stronger because of it. Not only do they operate efficiently internally as a chapter, but continue to strive for excellence as a chapter both regionally and nationally. More often than not, I am always able to find a Brother of VCU attending various events, whether it is a Southeast regional event, Northeast regional event, or a National Lambda Phi Epsilon Event, VCU has always had a strong presence in Lambda Phi Epsilon. Moreover, countless times I find VCU, as a Chapter, hosting an event, such as Junior Actives (JA) Retreat, and always eager to host more. This chapter holds a special place in my Lambda heart. During my early neo years as a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon, VCU was one of the first Interest Groups I had ever met. A few members of their future Charter Class traveled up to Toronto for the Annual Summerfest event, and I was surprised by how respectful and interesting these IG members were. I had quickly felt the spark

of brotherhood in these potential brothers, as well as seeing their determination to exemplify the values of Lambda Phi Epsilon with their own Chapter. I give my full support that Virginia Commonwealth University has earned and deserves the privilege of Active Status. They have demonstrated during their time as a colony and associate chapter that they have the ability to operate, both internally and externally, as an optimal chapter. I have no doubt that Virginia Commonwealth University will continue to represent the epitome of Lambda Phi Epsilon as an Active Chapter of this fraternity.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATIONFROM PRESIDENT

TO THEBROTHERS OFLAMBDA PHIEPSILONFRATERNITY,INC.,

On behalf of Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. at the University of Cincinnati – Beta Chapter, I would like to recognize the achievements of the brothers of the VCU Associate Chapter and recommend them to achieve active status in your fraternity. The brothers of the VCU chapter have always been supportive of my chapter, even though we are a couple states away from them. They are truly supportive of Greek organizations near and far. These brothers have always given us support at our events such as our National Midwest Formals in the past two years, our annual Delta Phi Lambda Week, Convention, and many other various campus events we have held. Aside from their astounding support, these members have also given us advice on how to better our chapter. The VCU Associate chapter is truly a well-rounded organization that takes the extra mile to stand out in the Greek Community. My chapter has always appreciated the support they have given us. We hope that Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc. will offer an active status to these hardworking brothers.

Sincerely,

MICHAEL LIU“P.R.O.W.L.” Coming into college, I already had everything set in place. Most of my friends were already here, I knew what I wanted to achieve in life, and all in all I just wanted to have the most memorable four years of my life. Never once would I ever have guessed that joining a fraternity would be among my life’s achievements. I still remember my very first rush event five years ago, not sure what to expect, I stumbled into a house filled with Asian guys just having fun. At first glance this would have seemed like any other typical Asian get-together, however upon closer inspection, after really getting to know these individuals, I realized it was completely different. It wasn’t until I met the brothers of Lambda Phi Epsilon that I realized how priceless true brotherhood

was and how difficult it is to come across. Iknow time and time again we’ve preached that there’s a limit to friendship, a finite line that your friends typically will never cross for you, bearing few exceptions. You could imagine my awe when I saw first hand that the only finite line within this fraternity was the confidence that each and every individual had for the brotherhood. What I really want to emphasize is our brotherhood. Most people would consider themselves lucky to find a handful of individuals they can truly trust outside of their immediate family during their lifetimes… I’m fortunateenough to have an entire brotherhood filledwith them.

My name is Michael “V1RAL” Caldwell. My hometown is Chesapeake. I moved to Midlothian, VA (located in Richmond) when I was a freshman in high school. I am ½ Filipino, ¼ Japanese, and ¼ White and before Lambda Phi Epsilon, I have never hung out with Asian people because I thought they were really weird and nerdy. Entering my freshman year at VCU, I told myself I would never join a fraternity because I never wanted to “pay” a ridiculous amount of money to buy some friends. I was very wrong when I was introduced to Lambda Phi Epsilon the first semester freshman year. I kept an open mind. I immediately felt the closeness and brotherhood that I’ve been looking for, something I have never experienced before because I am the oldest sibling in my family. Lambdas have made me into a strong leader and helped me revolutionize myself as a well-rounded young man. I am currently a fourth year senior, majoring in chemistry here

at VCU. I currently have a 3.6 GPA and Lambdas have helped me maintain those high grades. Lambdas have opened many opportunities and I am thankful for that. I am currently the Secretary of our chapter and have held many Executive Board positions campus-wide. I was also the Vice President Internal for my chapter as well as the Vice President of the Multi-Cultural Greek Council and Vice President of Operations (Secretary/Treasurer) for the Multi-Cultural Greek Council. I take pride in that because for the past four years since they started AFLV awards, VCU has been the Number One MGC in the country. I have also been Historian, Academic Chair, MGC Delegate, Risk Management Chair, and Publicity Chair for my chapter. Joining Lambdas have been the best decision I’ve made and the best 4 years of my life and I cannot wait to see what other things are in store for me. Lambdas ‘til I die.

JUNSIK YHUN“N.OXIDE” My name is Junsik “N.Oxide” Yhun and I crossed in Delta Class Fall 2009. Some people prefer to pledge or join after enjoying a semester or two of college without any Greek influence, but for me, I have no regrets whatsoever pledging in my first semester in college. Lambda Phi Epsilon has given me experiences I never would have experienced. The bonds and connections that I have formed with the brothers from my own chapter, from all over East – Coast, Midwest, West – Coast, and even internationally is just incredible. I am currently the Vice President of Internal Affairs and had the privilege of being a Pledge Dad for our Fall 2011 Theta Class. Being a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon taught me many values and given me responsibilities that have formed

me into a better man. All of the hardships and successes that I have been through in the chapter have been amazing and I am even more excited for the journey that is ahead of the chapter and myself. It is pretty incredible to see the progress the chapter has gone through since the day I crossed in Fall 2009. We were still a very young Colony Chapter, but through hard work we achieved Associate Status at the 2010 San Francisco Convention and now have an opportunity to achieve Active Status at the upcoming convention that is once again being held in San Francisco. One of the most important things of being a brother is that you are a brother for life. Being a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon has been a huge part of who I am now, and will be for the rest of my life.

TAN TRAN“DARKSLIDE” My name is Tan “Darkslide” Tran. My middle name is Van which is funny because my whole name rhymes. I came into VCU as an Asian kid that never hung out with Asian people. My entire school, nicknamed “Colonial Whites”, was full of white people. All my friends growing up were white and I had never known what it was like to have Asian friends. Upon coming to VCU, I looked up fraternities online and came across Lambda Phi Epsilon. I saw pictures of these Asian gangster-looking guys and immediately

went off thinking that I would never fit into a group like that. Walking around one day, I was approached by my rush chair and soon to be uncle who invited me to my first rush party and everything just went off from there. I’ve grown to love every bit of this fraternity and will never forget the memorable experiences from my 4 years of being in it.

I am currently attending my last semester at VCU and after graduation I plan on working for Homeland Security or work my way to becoming a lawyer. My life story begins in Ethiopia which is where I was born; I lived there for 9 years before I moved to the U.S. Most of my life has been simple I never had the best of everything nor the worst. Instead I would say I have an average life and that allows me to be humble and appreciate what I have. Throughout middle and high school, I didn’t do much but go to school and back home. When I arrived to my first year at VCU, everything

changed. I did something I would have never thought I would do, join a fraternity. I have always believed the stereotypes of fraternities and would have never joined one. So, when rush week started I was never rushed nor did I rush. I ended up going to two events just because my friends went, and soon after that I started pledging. After I crossed into Lambda Phi Epsilon, I made memories and bonds that will last me a lifetime and now that my college career is coming to an end, I am grateful for that split second decision to pledge for Lambda Phi Epsilon, as it has changed my life.

My parents are originally from South Korea but came here when they were in theirmid-20s. Growing up, I did not know much English because my parents only spoke Korean to me. I first started learning English when I started the first grade, so school was pretty hard for me as I was enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language) for about 8 years. I did not do a lot of sports as a child, so I was overweight for a period of time. When I started high school, I knew that I needed to lose weight so I decided to join the track team at my high school. I lost a total of 70 pounds over the course of my high school career. Not only did I do track in high school, I also did marching band and

ensemble for 4 years. I have also been bowling since I was 11 years old and continue to do that today. I decided to go to college and ended up going to Virginia Commonwealth University. I am currently a senior at VCU studying biology. Virginia Commonwealth is a really good school and very diverse, which is what every school needs. I am part of some clubs at VCU, including badminton club, which is a new hobby I just started up and loving every minute of it. I also joined Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity Incorporated. Joining this fraternity made me a better person, giving me more confidence in myself and giving me such a loving family. I have no regrets joining this fraternity, and I will cherish every moment I have left at VCU.

ALAN NGO“CPT. GINYU” I was born in Arlington, Virginia on July 22, 1992. My father’s side of the family is Chinese and speaks the Cantonese dialect and my mother is Vietnamese. Both sides of my family live around the Northern Virginia area so I am extremely close to all of my relatives, especially since all of my cousins are about the same age as me. I’d gone to the same elementary, middle and high schools as my cousins throughout my entire public school days so we were pretty much my brothers. Most of my friends were Hispanic, Black, and a small handful of white folk. That all changed however when we parted ways for our different colleges. My first semester in college was very dull but I managed to find a bit of fun and excitement when I discovered Lambda Phi Epsilon my spring semester. Honestly speaking, joining was one of the best decisions I have ever made because without this fraternity, I would probably be an average nobody at VCU. The lifelong friends

I’ve made wouldn’t be possible without this fraternity. I also wouldn’t have had any real source of networking had I not joined. Because of the fraternity I was able to reach down to my roots and now I feel at home amongst my family of Asians. Not to resentful of my non-Asian friends but, I was tired of being the “Jackie Chan” of the group, the token Asian kid. Aside from Lambda life, I aspire to be a pediatrician after finishing my undergraduate degree in biology. The reason for this is because I have always felt my extremely happy, friendly nature, and fair intellect has made me suitable for working with young children. I also feel that by becoming a doctor, I can eternally give back to my community by helping the young generation live their life to the fullest. With all this being said, I probably wouldn’t have the social skills and confidence to want to become a larger part of my community had it not been for Lambda Phi Epsilon.

My name is Kyeong Hwan “Reaver” Turpen, and I am a 24 year old Junior attending Virginia Commonwealth University. I grew up influenced by my family and the church being taught to always do good and to be strong in the face of adversary and to be loyal no matter what. To be honest I say the biggest influences in my life are the heroes that I grew up watching in movies and TV like Superman and Yoda. Those characters with their wise sayings and badassness really inspired me to grow up (though not literally) be like them and have those kind of characteristics. So as the years went by, I learned that the most valuable thing about life is the bonds you form with the family you have and especially with your friends and to have their backs even if they don’t do the same. Leaving my home and moving down to Richmond for school was definitely one of the

hardest things to do as I’ve already setup my second family with close friends and to leave them and find new ones was going to be pretty challenging. In the end however, I was led to to Lambdas purely by accident! I didn’t know I was actually joining a fraternity and by the time I knew what was going on it was already too late to turn back. But the thing is… I could have easily turned my back on my pledge bros, the brothers, and the fraternity itself even after crossing, but facing adversity and challenges with my fellow brothers, I’ve come to accept these men as part of my family and would not leave them and gladly help those who need help and watch over the future leaders of my chapter, and at the same time accept help from those older as they continue to help me advance myself in life.

MARK SHANK “GAMBIT” My name is Mark Shank, brother name Gambit. I was born on July 26, 1991. I am of Caucasian descent, majority making up of English and French descent. I was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina and grew up on a military base there. As a child, I had friends from all over the globe, all the way from the Philippines to the Netherlands. I can attribute this to a huge reason why I landed here at VCU and in Lambda Phi Epsilon. I had always grown up around a very diverse crowd, so it seemed normal to me. The reason I joined Lambda Phi Epsilon was also partially due to my best friend Chris Pak “Biohazard,” who is Korean.

I am currently studying at VCU as a Mass Communications: Strategic Advertising major. I had quite a journey getting to this major. I attended Old Dominion University my freshman year as a Marketing major and didn’t switch until I came to VCU in 2011. I hope to graduate in the spring of 2014 and accomplish my goal of getting a job with an ad agency as an account planner. New York is my main goal of where I want to end up.

GOALS/OBJECTIVESTo have a successful career and to live a happy life.

My name is Ronald Vincent P. De Guzman and I am a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon. I am a Filipino-American born in Oakland, California. When I was born, my mom, aunt, and grandpa had recently migrated to the United States in search for a better life and have gone through many struggles to reach the status of where they are today. My biological father left my mom and I didn’t help us either. It caused me to have numerous babysitters and a number of people I consider the people whom raised me. I have moved numerous times within California, the Philippines, and Virginia throughout my life time so far. Constantly moving was such a pain; friends would come and go, the cultures were different, and it separated me from my family and those who raised me growing up. I played many instruments throughout my childhood like the cello, French horn, saxophone, and guitar

just to name a few. In fifth grade, I thought I was the coolest kid for being in both band and orchestra. During high school, I would play basketball, football, and such afterschool before I headed home. I really wanted to play a sport during high school, but due to my family’s situation I could not. At the time, my mother still worked in California and would travel across the country every week and my step-father worked all day from morning ‘til night, which caused me to have the responsibility to watch and take care of my two younger brothers. Going to Virginia Commonwealth University is the best decision I have ever made. It introduced me to my family, yes, Lambda Phi Epsilon. My brothers are people I can trust and go to for guidance which I did not have my whole life. Well, that is the gist of my life. More memories and experiences are yet to come.

BRYAN LE“FADEAWAY” I was born and raised in Fairfax, Virginia. The first five years of my life, I lived with mygrandparents and aunts and uncles on my mothers side of the family in a small apartment. I am the younger sibling of two, and my parents, being immigrants, were too busy working and trying to start a life in the United States. They lived with my older brother and my father’s side of the family. After those five years, my parents bought a house and we all lived there. I still currently reside in the same house. My parents were always at work so it was usually just my brother and I in the house. I loved music and sports. Since the fourth grade, I played in a club soccer and basketball team. I also started learning how to play the violin and piano. I stopped playing in club sports and taking music

lessons in high school. I still played pick-up games for both sports. In high school I joined the track team. I did sprinting and jumping events. I hated running, but I did it to stay in shape. I am now in the middle of my college career as an undergrad. I don’t know what I want to major in yet, but I would like to leave a positive impact on the world. I would like to choose a career that positively benefits people and pays enough so I could live comfortably.

HIEP DINH “RADITZ” I was born May 11, 1993 in Riverhead, NY. I am of Vietnamese and Indian descent. I was born and raised on Long Island, NY before I moved to Virginia when I was 14. Some of my hobbies include playing basketball, chess and poker. Some random things about me include I completed the Buffalo Wild Wings challenge, I hit a half court buzzer beater for the win in one of our Greek league intramural basketball games, I read the whole Twilight saga, I enjoy listening to Hip Hop and EDM music and going to shows, my favorite teams include the New York Knicks and the Washington Redskins. I am currently majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Business. I crossed Lambda Phi Epsilon Fall 2011. I am glad I became a part of this brotherhood early, as it gave me more

opportunities. Some positions I have held previously are Alumni Chair, Brotherhood Chair, Fundraising Chair and Assistant New Member Educator for VCU’s Iota Class. I am now a part of the current eBoard as Treasurer. The thing I love most about Lambdas is the people it gave me a chance to meet. Being a part of Lambda Phi Epsilon gave me a sort of cultural rebirth and made me more proud of being Asian. In high school, I had very few Asian friends and never knew much about the Asian community. I have a sense of family here at VCU through Lambdas and that’s something that makes my college experience so much easier and enjoyable. I want to continue to give back to this brotherhood and the community around me.

I grew up in Fairfax, Virginia and went to high school at W.T. Woodson High School. I am the older brother of two children in my family. Since I was a kid, I always believed that it was up to the older brother to take care of the younger brother, or sibling in general, and it has applied to how I live and act as a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon. I believe our motto “To be leaders among men,” means that like an actual older blood brother to a younger brother, it is up to the older brothers of the fraternity to guidethe younger, more inexperienced brothers in becoming better men. Therefore I believe that the older brother, whether it be a brother from the same chapter or another chapter, should be able to say the right things and teach the correct things. I have seen older brothers that

have some problems and teach things that I personally do not believe in or think is right, but regardless I still respect those brothers because they are still older and have crossed before me. I strive to be more like the older brothers in mychapter because even though I have not had the chance to meet every single older brother that crossed in our chapter at VCU, all the brothers I have met have been able to teach me many things and bring many things to our chapters. I believe after joining Lambda Phi Epsilon, I have learned so many things that I otherwise would not have learned had I not. School is very important, but it would not have taught me the values that the fraternity has taught me such as actual brotherhood and the concept of a familyoutside of my real family.

I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1990. Although born here, my family quickly moved to Virginia due to my father being in the Navy. A majority of my lifetime was spent in Virginia Beach where I have been living for the past nineteen years.I had been going to a private school all my life with the mindset that I had wanted to become a medical doctor. During this time I also foundinterest in many sports such as basketball, soccer, tennis, and track. I also had interest in music as I had been playing the piano for ten years. In 2008, I had chosen to go to Old Dominion University where I had been pursuing a Biochemistry track in Chemistry. I had always held an interest in chemistry as I was astounded how our body functions. Such a small chemical

imbalance can affect us all so much, whichmade me want to understand “why”. In the spring of 2009 I made a decision to transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University where I continued my chemistry track for two years. After these two years, I had an internal conflict of the profession I was pursuing. I had always been interested in how things work so Engineering was a big eye opener for me. I changed my track to Mechanical Engineering, which has allowed me to further my analytical skills. Choosing engineering was a life choice I don’t regret. In the fall semester of 2011, I also made the decision to try and join Lambda Phi Epsilon, which in turn has molded me even further into becoming a leader in my community.

CHRIS PAK “BIOHAZARD” I was born in the small town of Fredericksburg in Virginia, on September 28, 1990. Growing up as an Asian American in Fredericksburg was a very tough experience but it molded me into who I am today. To give some perspective, my high school had about 1800 students and I graduated with a class of 300; out of those 300 only 3 people were Asian. Many people would describe Fredericksburg as a “hick” town with a lot of “rednecks”, and along with that lifestyle there often comes a level of ignorance. When I was younger, I was embarrassed of being Asian, and I took all the negativity from my peers and turned it into anger. My parents enrolled me in lots of programs to help vent my anger, such as Tae Kwon Do, soccer, basketball, piano, and even

sent me to a private Christian middle school. However, by the time I was in high school, I was proud of my heritage and embraced it. Since coming to VCU and experiencing college life, I’ve become much more open minded; and due to the university’s multicultural student base, I’ve always felt very welcome and accepted. When I first transferred to VCU, I was searching for an on-campus Asian interest student organization, and my roommates’ friends told me about Lambda Phi Epsilon. I was very wary of fraternities and I had never thought of joining one due to the bad image that the tend to portray. After learning more about Lambda Phi Epsilon and meeting brothers during rush week, I made the decision to join and it was exactly what I was looking for.

KEVIN LUU “DOCTOR WHO” I’m of a Chinese descent and I’m fortunate to still have both of my parents and one older brother two years older than me; my four grandparents were born in China, but eventually fled to Vietnam when China became Communist, with only a few things they took with them and they started a new life. When the war ended, my grandparents’ hard work was taken from them by the new government. My parents, in their teens, took a chance and boarded a boat with little personal belongings headed to an unknown destination. They eventually arrived in America. When my parents arrived in America, they worked in the morning, the night, the cold, the heat and my father went to school while my mother gained experience in the work force. I personally take

my grandparents’ and parents’ life struggles very seriously. There is a saying that goes along the lines of, “I want my kids to have a better life than I did.” Honestly I hate that saying; I believe my parents should have a better life than me. I grew up with two parents, a brother, and my parents were alone thousands of miles away from home. My parents have always stressed academics, to do well in school and to go above and beyond. Academics have mainly influenced my life, and I focus on studying so that I will be successful later in life so that I will be able to support my parents and my own children. I’m not particular close to my parents, but I know that my parents have good virtues and values, which they passed on to my brother and me.

My name is Bach Nguyen and my birthday is on May 22, 1993. I am a United States Marine and take pride and honor in being one. This is my life. The journey for me to become a Marine was a hard and beneficial one. It was my dream and goal ever since I was a child, even though I never knew what it was really about at that age just thought that it was cool to be a Marine. It wasn’t until I was shipped to boot camp and stood on the yellow footprints did I really understand. In the beginning the yelling, screaming, speed, and intensity was very frightening to me. I did not know why I was doing what I was doing and thought it was completely pointless. Everything from screaming at the top of my lungs, sprinting around everywhere, and being completely

tight and motionless. The only thing that was keeping me motivated was my family’s letters. My grandmother who passed away while I was in bootcamp was the motivation for me through the whole process. I built appreciation for family and realized that I took everything for granted. I realized that I was a boy before I became a Marine. The day when I returned from the crucible and stood before the Iwo Jima memorial, I knew that I had accomplished what most could not. I was handed the Eagle, Globe and Anchor and could not hold back the tears. I built a lot of maturity in the end learning much about life and appreciation for life. I cherish every moment of boot camp because it was what built me from a boy to a man. This is the most important part of my life.

My name is Ryan Nhan Nguyen. I am currently enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University as a sophomore. I was encouraged to apply to VCU because they have a reputational medical and dental school. After graduating with a master’s degree, I plan to apply my knowledge and experience into the real world and find work as an Oral Surgeon. During my first semester of sophomore year, I decided to become a brother of Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc. I was inspired to join Lambdas because of the strong bond of brotherhood. I am an only child and will never know what it is like to have any siblings. My parents divorced recently, last April 2011. I moved out of my parents’ house and currently living in Richmond with my cousin. My best friend, who has been

with me through all the challenges I havefaced in the last six years, is my Pomeranian, Panda. Thus, the bond the brothers share was something I wanted to experience myself. It was not just the brotherhood that inspired me, but also the opportunities the fraternity presented – service work, road trips and meeting new people. Furthermore, the fraternity taught me to be more responsible, time-management, and become a leader among men. When I became part of Lambda Phi Epsilon, I knew I became a part of a close family.

Hello my name is Thomas and I’m a Virginia Commonwealth University Lambda and proud of it. Before I came into this great brotherhood, I wasn’t the type to be very outstanding and outspoken. I usually kept to myself or my group of friend, and I wasn’t the type to just start conversations with random people. After I joined this brotherhood, I had a completely different outlook on life. I started becoming more involved in different activities and even in my community. I am currently a college sophomore studying Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness and I am the current Service Chair for VCU Lambdas. I am also involved with other student orgs like VSA and the rock climbing club. The most memorable moment that I have is going to the Children’s

Museum to help out with the daily operations and to help entertain the kids; it showed me that giving back to the community is one of the greatest feelings of all. I would also like to say that if I had not joined this fraternity then I would probably be the same old person; not involved in any other activities, I would probably be one of those kids who just goes out and parties every weekend, and I probably wouldn’t really help out with the community. But now that I am a part of this Brotherhood, I am constantly looking for ways to help out with the community and better myself as an individual. I think that being a part of this fraternity has definitely improved my characterand has allowed me to meet very inspirational people.

I was born in Fairfax, Virginia on February 25, 1993. I spent most of my childhood in Fairfax. My parents are first generation immigrants with no college education so we didn’t have too many luxuries. Childhood experiences were mainly playing on the playground and with neighborhood kids, nothing too exciting but still memorable. I used to be really overweight, a bit surprising in consideration of my current weight. Up until middle school, I was pretty chubby and had really low self-esteem because all of my relatives use to make fun of me for being overweight. Then puberty came along and I finally began to look a little bit more proportional.Throughout high school, I often times skipped class mainly because the high school I attended wasn’t too difficult and there were no real consequences for skipping

classes. On the days that I skipped I usually just slept in or played DOTA. I did not have a car at that time, and I didn’t get one until senior year of high school. Even after getting to college I still had an uneventful life, mainly because of a super clingy ex-girlfriend. On one of trips back to visit her, I wrecked my car, more specifically in a collision with a police officer. I was checking this GPS and just wasn’t paying attention and the next thing I noticed was my car up against a white SUV. That basically sums up all the interesting points in my life, the rest of it consists of sleeping, eating, cooking, and playing video games. They weren’t that cool but I still remember them. I hold them precious because with everything going on as you grow older, you find less time for the simpler things in life.

PETER PARK“T.O.M.B.” My full name is Peter Garam Park. I was born on January 7, 1993, in Fairfax, Virginia. I come from a Christian family, I am Korean, and I have one older brother. I crossed Fall 2012, and I am currently a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University. Looking back at my years in grade school, I started hanging out with my white friends. But they also teased me for being the only Asian in the group. It made me curious about my own identity. It wasn’t until middle/high school that I started hanging out with more Asian people. Most of them were Korean, but the thing was I couldn’t speak Korean. Being an Americanized Korean, I wasn’t too familiar with everything about Korean culture. I didn’t know if I could call myself Korean. Having this identity crisis in High School really made me shy and anti-social. I didn’t

really join any clubs, joined any sports teams, or did any after school activities because I was scared of being judged. Graduating High School and moving on to college was a big benchmark in my life. As a freshman, it was really exciting because it felt like a fresh new start in the next chapter of my life. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I decided to join Lambda Phi Epsilon. When I started rushing for them, I really felt comfortable. There were a large variety of personalities that I felt easily connected to when I was hanging out with them. When I crossed, I knew that I had become something that was beyond me, and it was the greatest day in my life. In all my years up to that point, I never thought that I would become a Lambda, let alone be in a fraternity. I was now a part of a family that I longed for in my earlier years.

GOALS/OBJECTIVESTo become the most outstanding South Korean Ameri-can leader that reaches and reaches fortougher, new goals every day.

MIN KIM“H.W.A.R.A.N.G.” My name is Min Kim. My brother name is H.W.A.R.A.N.G. I was born in South Korea and had to immigrate to the United States in 1999. Moving to a completely different country with different cultures, I had a real tough time having a good childhood. Knowing only how to read and write in Korean, I was clueless in my kindergarten class. However, when faced with what seemed like an unsurpassable obstacle, I learned English quickly. After adjusting to living in a small apartment, speaking a totally different language and making new friendships, my family moved from northern Virginia to Richmond. In the end, I moved a total of 4 times around Virginia and equally adjusted 4 times. Moving around so much taught me to be able to think quickly on my feet and to adjust to the surroundings. Because of my turbulent and

unstable childhood, I had to make sure at least one thing was stable. My stability was grounded in my morals and values. No matter what elementary, middle, or high school I attended, I did not let the environment mold me. I molded my environment. Friends came from many different cliques. As a comical, studious, and affable Asian student, my friends and peers respected me even if I had only attended their school for half a month to a year. Honestly, as I look back at my childhood I am grateful for the instability. The art of keeping oneself stable even in turbulent periods of time that I had discovered through my own turbulent period of time definitely helped me to become the leader among men that I am today.

GOALS/OBJECTIVESMy goal in life is to make a lot of money doing some-thing. I want a big house and a nice car todrive. I want to be a pharmacist because its repetitive work that allows me to work a lot makemoney and then have great vacations. I want to live a comfortable life and having money makesit better.

XAVIER SHAW“G.R.I.Z.Z.L.Y.” I didn’t have many friends growingup because I was into things the kids didn’t find cool. I watched Digimon, Yugioh, and Pokemon and not a lot of kids in Newport News, Virginia enjoyed things like that. Also paired with a military dad, there wasn’t much time for friends. I’ve been in many homes around Virginia, because my father is in the military. It wasn’t until I moved into my current address in Virginia Beach at the age of 9, was I able to have a steady life. It was very hard to keep an established friendship base throughout the years I was moving. No one accepted me because I was always the “new kid.” The first friends I had made at the current address in Virginia Beach were Asian because that’s how my area is. It is a mixture of black, Asian, and Latino community. Though simultaneously, I didn’t really know

how to interact with people that were foreign. Though the major language and cultural gap, I continued to hang out with my new friends. I had formed deep bonds with these friends. I have learned many things, but what really ended up bringing the group together was the fact that everyone skateboarded. My first pair of skate shoes was given to me by my Filipino neighbor, Theo. This showed me what true friendship and brotherhood was. Because of him, I continued to keep skating. Evidently, throughout my school career I have always had Asian friends because those were the type of people I have come to be comfortable with. I am a huge anime fan. As a child and into adulthood, I have kept that one aspect that has never changed. I feel like it makes me feel like a kid and I enjoy it.

GOALS/OBJECTIVESTo become as strong and as influential as the people that have molded me into man I am today.

I was born in the rural area of Southwestern Virginia in a little town called Saxe. It was here that my parents raised me on the core values of family, hard work, and honesty. At a very young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of getting a better understanding of people of different walks of life. I became very active in my church and community, and I often participated in service events that benefitted worthy causes. However, it was the arrival of my little brother that proved to be the biggest test of all. At a young age, my brother was diagnosed with autism and was expected to be a dependent for the rest of his life. As time went on I began

to understand the importance of being self-sufficient and I wanted only the best for him.Regardless of what the doctors had said I made it my sole purpose for him to be independent.Through my efforts, I not only saw a change in my brother, I began to see a change in myself aswell. The importance of family ties definitely proved stronger than any type of diagnosis and it is that aspect that currently guides me in my everyday living.

GOALS/OBJECTIVESMy goal in life is to pursue a living that will make me happy. To give back to my communityand to bring forth a new generation that will benefit the community even more.

JOHNNY BUI“R.A.M.P.A.G.E.” I was born in Richmond, Virginia on December 1, 1993. When I was about five years-old, my family moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. After ten years together, my family was split apart and is no longer as close. I moved back to Richmond with my mom about five years ago. And over those five years, I can honestly say I have gained some lifelong friends along the way. Amongst those people that I have come across is my godfather. My godfather is the one man I truly look up to as a role model. He has taught me a lot in such short time and I have taken everything he has said to heart. During my high school years, I was at a lost with what to do with myself. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I started to become more independent by getting a job and working towards my first

car. I joined a lot of clubs and did track and field as a sport throughout the years and that honestly did shape my work ethic. For my final years in high school, I got accepted into a technical program called High Tech Academy. This program was basically an introduction to general engineering and was also partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University. Now I am in VCU’s School of Engineering and came into the university with credits that made me eligible to be a sophomore during my first year. I have been taking advantage of every opportunity that comes across my path that may benefit me in the future, such as being a youth leader at my church and of course joining Lambda Phi Epsilon. I cannot wait to see what this fraternity of fine leaders and men has to offer me during my years in college.
