    Viedo Chadwick 2003

    Appellation Maipo Valley

    Composition 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

    Alcohol 14.0% by vol.

V i n e y a r dThe Chadwick vineyard is loca ted in Puente Alto in the Andean foothills of Santiagos south eas t corner along thenorthern bank of the Maipo River. The 15-hectare (37acre) vineyard is located in the Alto Maipo sub-appell ation, considered one of the best terroirs of the Maipo Valley and an area especially suited for growing red Bordeauxvarieties of exceptional quality. The soils are of alluvial origin moderately fertile, allowing vegetative growth and

fruit load to reach an ideal balance, while the stone compound permits excellent drainage. The altitude of thevineyard coupled with the cool morning winds that blow down from the mountains in the spring (Raco Winds),moderate daytime temperatures and allow the grapes to perfectly ripen , preserving the acidity a nd freshness of thefruit. The high temperature oscillation is responsible for the intense colour of the wines produced.

Altitude :670 m/2,200 ft. above sea level.

Climate :Mediterranean with winter rainfall and a long dry season.Soil :Shallow 40 cm (16-inch) strata of clay loam over a 70% stone-filled riverbed of alluvial origin with a pH of 7.9.

Winter precipitation of 480 mm (19 inches), a cool spring with a low mean temperature in November, well-

drained permeable soil and the deep development of roots all enable the development of a balanced canopy thatfavors proper management of the fruit load. Irrigation was not required during flowering, set or the first stageof grape development, which favored the natural growth of small, uni form berries, a common feature in year s thatproduce high concentration and quality. Drip irrigation in this vineyard was only needed during ripeningfromlate January to Apriland just enough was applied to ensure plant health and maintain concentrated fruit. The

perfect balance between vigor and fruit load, the moderate precipitation during the ripening period (30 mm/1.2inches) and a heat summation of 1,737 degree days, all worked together to provide ideal conditions to ensurehealthy fruit and allow tannins to mature fully. This wine clearly reflects the excellent conditions of this season, highlighting ripeness, robustness and concentration. The use of aerial photography allowed us to divide the vineyard depending on the vigor. This way we are able toharvest depending on the progress of maturity of each specific lot, reaching an even ripening of our grapes.

To avoid exposing the grapes to high temperatures, manual harvesting was carried out exclusively in the morning(between 7 and 11 a.m.), placing the grapes in 15 kg boxes (33 lb) in refrigerated trucks and transported to thewinery.

Having grapes of outstanding quality we can minimize the interventions during vinification. This is the case withour Viedo Chadwick 2003 where very traditional winemaking techniques all owed the full potential of the fruit tobe expressed. The grapes were selected on a sortin g table to eliminate all kinds of plant ma terial, leafs and stems

to avoid any herbaceous notes in the final blend then fermented in stainless steel tanks at temperatures around28-30C (82-86F) and macerated for 25 to 35 days, depending on the development of each individual lot. After the whole maceration, we racked the wine off its skins and again racked it from tank to tank a couple oftimes, to ensure absolute clarity before transferring it into new French oak barrels for 18 months of ageing.

The 2003 vintage produced a deeply-colored wine with the classic intense flavors of the Alto Maipo Valley, expressed as ripe red and black fruit. An intense and complex wine, its elegant balance of fruit and oak is

complemented by a pleasant touch of sweet spice. Though big and powerful on the palate, the fine quali ty of thiswines silky-smooth tannins lends it a sophistication and finesse that endures through its long, lingering finish. This wine is sure to please today, and will be a treasure in the years to come.

Cellaring Potential : Optimum Range: 2006-2018. Decanting is suggested.
