The Pastor’s Pen June 13, 2019

What a month! We are busy in our transition be-

tween Sterling City and San Angelo. We are sort-

ing possessions, hauling some things to a tempo-

rary storage unit, and frantically packing as much

as we can. Oh, and our daughter, Ella, had her

tonsils and adenoids removed this week and is in

the rough part of the recovery as I type this letter.

Summer is supposed to be a “slow” time, but it

never seems to work out that way. I’ve also killed

three rattlesnakes near our house in the last two

weeks and we now have bees in the Sterling City

sanctuary building! I have told the snakes, bees,

skunks, foxes, rats, mice, raccoons, opossums,

and bats that it has been nice knowing them, but

they are NOT welcome to join us in San Angelo. If

any of ya’ll see them trying to sneak into the St.

Luke neighborhood, please remind them their

home is in Sterling City!

We are excited to be coming to St. Luke and look

forward to ministry and life with you all. We thank

you in advance for the beautiful home we will (or

maybe when you’re reading this, will have?) move

(d) into in a wonderful neighborhood. We thank

you for your generous gifts of prayer, time, talent,

and financial resources past, present, and future

that make St. Luke a vital home for gospel based

ministry in Christ’s Kingdom. Charlie, Heidi,

George, Larry, Cathy, Larry, Ray, and others have

shared with us numerous times and in numerous

ways how wonderful St. Luke’s is. I’m eagerly an-

ticipating our time together! Just as a reminder,

my first Sunday in worship with you will be July 7.

I am the pastor in charge in Sterling City through

June 30. At this moment, I’m planning on the first

two Sundays to be standalone sermons. The first

will be more broad and the second (July 14) will

be a “get to know me” type sermon covering what

has brought me to this point, some of the things I

believe in, and what some of my hopes and

dreams are. I normally do not preach the Revised

Common Lectionary, opting instead for series

based on books of the Bible, stories from the Bi-

ble, Bible characters, or other topics. I am always

trying to improve and learn, so please get used to

me soliciting for honest feedback. I aim to grow

each year and not to harden or regress.

I hope and plan to meet with many, most, or all

of you in the coming months. Stay tuned for more

information on how that will work logistically. My

goal is normally to spend as much time in the

community as possible meeting people (inside and

outside the church) and praying over the mission

field, even more especially early in a new location.

If you can’t find me around the office, you can

reach me on cell phone and/or Cindy will likely

know where I am.

God the Father, Jesus the Christ, and the Holy

Spirit (our Trinitarian God) are AMAZING! What a

great God we worship! There is nowhere else in

the universe to look for completeness than to Je-

sus. He is Lord of all, King of kings. I have seen

him break through some of the hardest, darkest,

evilest hearts you can imagine. There is simply no

other way to explain some of the things I’ve expe-

rienced and witnessed than that gospel is True!

Praise God!

One final note, I have had a lot of questions about

why Methodist pastors are sent as opposed to be-

ing called. We have a unique system for sure!

Some of you are familiar with the itinerant system

while some others may not be. Our Bishop, Robert

Schnase, presented on this topic at our Annual

Conference last week in Corpus Christi. I found

this presentation enlightening and tremendously

helpful, even as someone who has 9+ years heav-

ily invested in this system! The presentation is

about an hour and ten minutes, so set aside some

time. I include the link here:

“Going Deep”

There are moments doing what I do that transcend the usual goofy skits, games , group activities, bowling, movies, Twilight Zones, Little Rascals, piz-za, pizza and more pizza. We call it “going deep”. It has to be the right time with exactly the right kids and the right dynamics for it to happen. When it happens it is usually a very organic pro-cess because if it is forced it will never go there. These are the times where our “family” grows emotionally in leaps and bounds. It’s a time where the walls go down and extreme honesty is met with respect and tolerance. This is also a time where the Holy Spirit can enter these wonderful young people as they lay their emotions bare and fill up those empty spaces with God’s love for them. That’s a difficult concept for young people whose pop culture is in their faces 24/7. If you are of my generation or older, imagine your stupidest or most embarrassing moment that you shared with maybe 5 kids in your own circle and they told 5 kids so 10 people have heard your dumb kid-fueled moment. Now move forward 20 years and that same silly stupid moment happens but the 5 kids you were with have that moment on Insta-gram, Twitter, Facebook, snapchat and the 5 extra kids that knew your moment now becomes 100’s in seconds even 1000’s in minutes Suddenly that’s all you hear about from your friends, people you don’t know, people are whispering around corners and pointing and your little 5 friend world just be-came huge and snickeringly judgemental. Our last “deep” moment came a couple of weeks ago when the Sunday night Youth Time was just girls, Carol and myself. I looked at Carol and said we need to have some “girl time”. So after some of that yummy pizza we sat down around the table and answered some questions. They were ques-tions about judgement, attraction, school and church. What we discovered was pretty amazing. Every kind of personality, socioeconomic and emotional levels were represented but the main subject that came from every single girl was about judgement. They feel judged by the school, their teachers, their friends, their acquaintances and all those people snickering around the corner. Inter-estingly these are girls that know who they are. They know they are God’s children. They know where they stand socially and who they want to be

and yet the comments and ire of their peers, their teachers and more importantly the 100’s behind the social media wall can define them. Not define them totally but define them in the moment. In hearing all this you start to understand the inci-dents of depression and low self esteem that this generation can feel. They spoke of the ire of the “popular kids” and some said they liked and want-ed to be “popular kids”. All agreed on the weight of the judgement they perceive every moment of the day. Please understand that I am condensing a long conversation with 10 girls. So this is where the “going deep” happens. If I could (and I tried) to help them understand that in 10 years none of this will matter. That when they have their own family and are enjoying all that life has to offer (and this bunch of beautiful, talented young ladies will most likely experience all that life has to offer) they won’t be worried about what Bobby said in 3rd period English class. More im-portantly that no matter what, they will always be God’s beautiful, wonderful child. That they always need to see themselves the way God sees them and suddenly the 100’s of hidden judging eyes should melt away. Easier said than done. When they are told by a church member that their clothes are not appropriate in church and they should be ashamed when their clothes are stylisti-cally current. That they truly know that God doesn’t care what they wear to church because he doesn’t see the rip in their jeans but sees the love in their heart. That no “style” can trump the beau-ty that God sees as His child comes into His house. Please know that a small comment like that is a huge deal to this generation. Those comments came more than a couple of times from people in their own church which is shameful. Carol and I have always tried and will continue to try to make sure that their confidence should come from the unending love that God bestows upon us and not from the silly stupid human comments that are made in their life. It was an extreme eye opening hour long conver-sation for the only guy in the room and it made me love these girls all the more. We are so lucky to have the kids in our church and our lives that we have. We have parents that have shown God to these kids their entire lives and as they cross the road to furthering independence may they remem-ber God’s smile first before a snarky judgement from someone who won’t matter tomorrow. Please pray for our Mission Camp July 8th-11th. It could be the “Deepest” one yet!! Till next time, Peace! John
