Experience VAUDE fi rsthand. Come join us!7 exciting stages, 500 motivated participants, 550 energy draining kilometers and 14,800 m of breath-taking altitude – that was the 2010 VAUDE MoutainBike Trans Black Forest, one of the most diffi cult stage races for all-terrain cyclists. VAUDE was not only the title sponsor, but also had one of its own teams competing.

“I’d advise every ambitious hobby cyclist to participate in this race”, said one of the athletes after arriving at the fi nish line at Feldberg. Fans are even able to share in the excitement on TV – 200,000 of them followed the last episode on German sports television. MountainBike Magazine also regularly reported on the race as title sponsor.

The 2011 route, which only has 5 stages, has already been planned, and anticipation of this year’s event is already growing! The 2011 VAUDE MoutainBike Trans Black Forest starts out in Pforzheim and once again will end in Feldberg. Do you want to participate? Register today at – www.trans-schwarzwald.com

Philipp Foltz, test rider and sponsoring part-ner at VAUDE, and Stefan Schlie are taking on a special challenge – the Zugspitze. They’re going to go up one side and down the other. Their goal is to stay on their bikes 100% of the time during their descent over the Knorrhütte and the Rheintal Angerhütte. They’ll be pushing their bodies to the limit and at the same time be able to reward them-selves with fresh air and a fantastic view.

You’re both pioneers of the mountain bike scene. What’s made you decide to

take on the Zugspitze?

Philipp: Anyone who thinks this isn’t a big deal is wrong. This trip is a real challenge for me. After all, we want to ride from Ehrwald over the Ehr-walder and Hochfellner Alps to the Zugspitze, all in one day. This ascent includes longer stretches where you have to carry or push your bike – and that’s surely going to take a lot out of me.

Stefan: I’m motivated by the thought of taking on the Zugspitze with a good friend and challenging ourselves with this insane descent. We want to ride from the top all the way down into the valley without dismounting our bikes once – which will make this trip a true all mountain enduro tour. And I’m really excited about it.

What are you expecting to experience on your Zugspitze adventure?

Stefan: We’re both professionals and know that we can rely on each other. This tour is going to be full of extreme situations which will make us both be happy to be sharing it with a team partner.

Philipp: With Stefan, I’ve got a partner on my side who’s already gone on this incredible tour. That helps spur me on because I want to also experi-ence the extraordinary feeling that he’s always talking about. And I know that I can use his experience to help me.

Is there ever a moment during your tours where you fi nd yourself saying:

this is exactly why I go out and do this?

Philipp: : Every time I take a break to just observe and intensely perceive the wildlife around me, I tell myself how wonderful it is that I’m able to experience it. And that can certainly happen several times on a tour.

Stefan: : I get a feeling of satisfaction to have again done something useful with my time and my talents. And of course, let’s not forget the pleasant feeling you get all over your body after so much action.

Tilmann Waldthaler is a voracious globetrotter.

Born in 1942 in Munich, he’s already rode across

every continent and through 132 countries. Since

1996 he’s been a VAUDE sponsoring partner.

Thanks to his immense experience, he’s able to

provide us with valuable ideas and feedback in the

fi eld of biking. Our products have to stand up to

his thorough endurance tests, and now he’s setting

out once again. This time he’s traveling 30,000 km

from Norway to New Zealand.

450,000 kilometers cycled. Not even a car is able to travel that distance.

What keeps your motor going?

Nature and the people living in it are what help keep me going. I fi nd it fas-cinating to see how the people on this planet are transforming it into one gigantic anthill. How they all use nature differently from country to country, and from continent to continent. And how they sometimes also harm it. Being able to experience this time and again is what both drives and chal-lenges me at the same time. It’s safe to say that having the freedom to set out when and where I want to is an absolute privilege.

Do you cycle without stopping or having a destination? Or are you approach-

ing your own personal destination?

I’m working on making things come full-circle. My cycling life began in 1977 with a trip From New Zealand to Norway. So for my last trip I plan to do it the other way around. At the moment I’m in Turkey and plan to be in New Zealand by the end of March 2012.

That’s over 30 years of cycling. What’s changed since your fi rst trip?

In a lot of places, nature is no longer as undisturbed and unspoiled as it once was. That’s certainly been a big change. However, it’s still just as fascinating in its many facets today as it was back then. I’ve also noticed that I’m more consciously aware of things around me because I look at things very closely and take more time at some locations, especially if I know I might never ride by there again. It’s simply been another start to a new and unforgettable adventure.

If you had one wish – what law of nature would you be able to override?

The wind.

Departing also means leaving – what do you like about that?

To me, leaving also means being able to go home again. I’m lucky enough to be able to go home after every departure, regardless of where my des-tination is. Some might say that I don’t have any roots. But I say that I’ve planted my roots everywhere. Every bike tour I go on enriches my life – and every drop of sweat and departure is worth it.

You’ve experienced a lot – but do you maybe have a moment that sticks out

in your mind because it was so incredibly special or perhaps even strange?

I have a ton of memories: a four month stay in Antarctica. Meeting Bob Marley. Visiting Indira Gandhi in New Delhi. Working with and for Max von Sydow and the Swedish Film Institute. Earthquakes, volcano eruptions in Indonesia and New Zealand, an encounter with a Sumatra Tiger etc, etc, etc. I could literally fi ll books with my memories.

At VAUDE we don’t just talk about environ-mental protection. We actively work towards putting it into action. With our “Ride Your Bike to Work: Less CO2, more fun!” cam-paign, 50 employees from our headquarters in Oberreisenbach saved 25,000 car kilom-eters.

“I really enjoy starting my day by riding my bike to work every morning. After 12 km of beautiful Upper Swabian countryside, I arrive at work in a great mood and ready to tackle the day”, reported Lena Strack, Packs’n Bags Product Designer at VAUDE. “For me, it’s not giving something up to leave my car parked in the driveway. In fact, in the meantime, I’ve actually sold it”, added Hans-Thomas Langowski, who has worked for VAUDE for 20 years and is the Division Head of Design and Technical Development of VAUDE backpacks. “Sometimes people feel sorry for me if I have to ride to work through the rain, snow and cold, but I actually feel sorry for them, because they aren’t starting their day with a breath of fresh air! My best ideas come to me when I’m riding to work and simultaneously I’m strengthening my athletic ability, which really comes in handy for my mountain tours.”

Lena Strack enjoys her rides: “The great thing is that every day starts off differently. Sometimes I get to watch the sun come up, or see the lake and mountains in fog… And if I’m lucky I get a great view of the Alps after climbing my favorite hill. It’s such an amazing feeling!”

VAUDE has been awarded by the German Working Group for Environmen-tally Conscious Management Association (B.A.U.M. e.V.) for our outstand-ing commitment. The award as the most bike friendly employer is a great motivator for those of us at VAUDE. We want to continue to genuinely em-body an ecologically friendly lifestyle in the future. We wish to encourage our employees to be just as enthusiastic about bike riding and thus incite their colleagues to also start coming to work on their bike. For example, by offering our employees shower facilities at our offi ces. By doing so we also emphasize our dedication to the environment and take yet another step to-wards becoming “Europe’s most environmentally friendly outdoor outfi tter”.
