Since our childhood, our primary idol is our Dad, who offers the vital hand of support for our very rst steps on a road of life, with its future stretching ahead into the distance of the future. Boxing has its very proud tradition of ghters who`ve decided to follow the trajectory of Dad. A decision which carries responsibility as well as pride. Fighters that are following the pioneering steps of paternal greatness. Muhammad Ali, the greatest gure of boxing,

was followed by his daughter, Laila Ali, who became one of the greatest female boxers and a pioneer of female pugilism. During her career, Laila conquered the WBC middleweight title and shaped an impressive undefeated record of 21 KO´s in 24 wins. Floyd Mayweather Jr, future Hall of Famer, has boxing coursing and teaming in his veins as does his father, Floyd Sr, as well as his uncles, Jeff and Roger, who shone in the sport. Despite having a tough childhood and some occasional differences with Pa, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was able to build a wondrous

career and retire with an undefeated record, to be considered as one of the best pound for pound ghters of all eras. One of the most amazing surprises in the history of our sport, occurred when in February, 1978, Leon Spinks, a boxer with only 7 pro matches, defeated Muhammad Ali to conquer the heavyweight belt. Lucky thirteen also marked triumph for the young Corey Spinks, who conquered the WBC, IBF and WBA welterweight championship after defeating Nicaraguan, Ricardo Mayorga, on December 13th in 2003.

With Mexican boxing there`s the towering gure of Julio Cesar Chavez, considered the glittering greatest this nation has produced thus far. His sons, Julio Cesar Jr. and Omar, decided to follow his steps into the ring. While the career of Omar didn’t develop quite as expected, Junior was able to conquer the Green and Gold middleweight belt. The World Boxing Council congratulates fathers, with dedication, effort and sacrice to provide their best round come around in order to give to their families the best possible future.

wearing down former titlist Olanrewaju

"God's Power" Durodola, to earn a ninth

round TKO win.

5,000 enthusiastic fans at the "Arena

Riga" saw a very close opening round, in

which both ghters had their moments,

but also used some dirty tactics forcing

world-class referee Frank Garza to rely

on all of his experience to control the

action. In round three Garza took a

point from Durodola for repeatedly

hitting after the break command.

After good back-and-forth action in the

rst three rounds, 31 year old Briedis

took control in the fourth pounding away,

and Duradola was on shaky legs. From

that moment on, the local hero was in the

driver's seat and continuously landed

hard and clean shots to the head. Briedis

scored a knockdown half-way through

round six with a well timed left hook to

the head, but was also penalized with a

point deduction later in that round for

excessive holding.

Although the Champ tried to ght back,

Duradola never fully recovered from the

knockdown and was on the wrong end of

some more very hard punches in the

seventh and eighth. At the beginning of

round nine Briedis nailed his opponent

into the red corner, Durodola stumbled

and was only held up on his feet by the

corner pad. It was correctly ruled as

another knockdown.

In the middle of another urry of

punches after 2:58 minutes of the ninth

round, Frank Garza had seen enough,

stepped in and waived it off, to protect

Durodola from receiving further

punishment. At the time of the stoppage,

Briedis was well ahead on all scorecards

(77-72, 78-70 and 78-70 at the open

scoring after the eighth round).

in Liverpool, England.

Shout and bellow it from the rooftops.... Tony Bellew (28-2-1, 18 KOs) delivered a 3 round KO over WBC #1 rated Ilunga Makabu (19-2, 18 KOs) to c l a i m t h e v a c a n t W B C cruiserweight belt on Sunday in the Goodison Park stadium in Liverpool, England.

It was a dream come true, because the se t t ing was Goodison Park, which is the home ground of Everton soccer Club. Tony was, is and forever will be an avid fan of "The Toffees!" And it`s his son`s eighth birthday today!

In round one, Bellew punished Makabu on the ropes, but then he got clocked by a Makabu straight counter left and went down, but got up. After a cautious round two, Bellew opened up in round three, severely rocking Makabu, then got him out of there with a ruthless barrage of punches, which knocked him cold. Makabu collapsed to the canvas just as referee Victor Loughlin stepped in to wave it off. Time was 1:20.

Khan, knew better than to hang

around cheek to jowl with a ring

predator, and was on his bike, back

pedaling, moving laterally and not

allowing the slower Canelo to plant his

f e e t t o u n l o a d a l u m b e r i n g

blockbuster, and paradoxically it was

Khan, who desisively landed rst and

cleanly.

The watershed came in the fth when

both simultaneously connected with

left hooks at close range. Canelo

who's built like a brick house didn't

inch or budge, but willowy Khan was

shaken, and stirred himself, but not

enough to avoid a sinking right to the

ribcage, which marked him with an

ugly purple welt to his slim torso.

It was never going to be possible for

courageous Amir Khan to match a

cannon, armed with a pellet gun

offense, and inevitable that he'd

eventually walk into a wall. But...

when it happened it was non the less

shocking.

Canelo swiveled and with the fulcrum

of power, start ing in his legs,

embodied in his trunk and translated

via his shoulder into a piston/Liston

st, he unleashed an almighty right

hook, which exploded on the side of

Khan's jaw. A left thrown by Khan an

instant later apped over Canelo's

head, as he dropped poleaxed,

banging his head hard on the

canvass.

“He is a fast ghter, and I knew things

would be complicated in beginning,

but I knew they would come to my

favor as the ght went on," said

Canelo, adding: "People have known

me only for my power. I have many

more qualities in the ring, and I

showed that. I think people saw more

of me tonight. Someone that comes in

to box gives you more trouble than

someone who comes right in, which

is a little easier."

Twin Jermell Charlo won the vacant W o r l d B o x i n g C o u n c i l superwelterweight title TKO'ing John Jackson in the eighth round, on a c a r d o r g a n i z e d b y T G B Promot ions and Mayweather Promotions at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

John, the son of legendary double champion and supreme power puncher Julian "The Hawk" Jackson, used his advantages of height, reach and slick boxing skills, milling on the retreat in the rst half of the ght, connecting with left jabs and

some sparing rather than spearing combinations.

According to the judges, John Jackson was ahead until the seventh round, 69-64 on all three cards.

However, Charlo who'd been landing some of his own jabs and heavy body punches, took matters into his own hands, unleashing a sustained attack at the beginning of the eighth. He landed a massive right hook to the side of Jackson's face, which froze, him and had him t o t t e r i n g o n u n s t e a d y , uncoordinated legs, like a newly born colt.

Charlo immediatly followed up, with a pair of left hooks on the button,

driving Jackson on to the ropes. His face came to rest on the second rope. Referee Tony Weeks, moved in swiftly to save John, stopping the ght at fty one seconds.

With this victory, Charlo remains undefeated at 28-0, with 13 knockouts, capturing the 154-pound WBC crown that Floyd Mayweather Jr vacated. Jackson slips to 20-3 with 15 knockouts.

Jermell Charlo is Jarmell's twin's brother. Jarmell is the super welterweight champion of the World Boxing Association. On that same bill, he defended his title against former world champion Austin Trout, winning a convincing unanimous decision.

The StubHub Center of Carson, California, has hosted dozens of fantastic and epic clashes, but on June 4th something so much more vibrant, ever so special, emotional, utterly unique and defying mere inadequate words or staid Anglo Saxon logic will transpire, with the first defense of the WBC super featherweight world champion, Francisco “Bandido” Vargas, facing the fiery no quarter asked, no quarter given titanic challenge of former world champion, Orlando “Siri” til hell freezes over Salido. A fight with all the vim, vain self regarding venom of bootleg hundred percent plus southern comfort, curl the tip of your boots moonshine, which fans will remember if they live to be a hundred! Forget the utterly mundane academic math of points, as this one`s never ever going the full distance! Coming from behind, or maintaining the pressure, as a valiant front runner, hare Vs a tortoise. Take your pick, yet it`s NOT a lucky dip, and we all full well know it`s all up for steely iron fisted grabs. Definitely not for milksops or for the ponderous pedantic faint hearted.... to the victor go the spoils. When two Mexicans fight, it`s for so much more than the mere trifling result. It`s for courage, it`s for valor, it`s for bragging rights. Like it or not, it`s for unashamed machismo. It`s for being able to look at yourself square in the face in the mirror in the morning! Like it or hate it...that`s precisely it! Feel fear? Show no fear. No pain, not gain. This is a lion hearted brawl. It`s most certainly not for the lily livered, posies, posers or the faint hearted. Let`s remember Francisco Vargas, who weathered and emerged battered but victorious from a typhoon against Japan`s Takashi Miura, at weather control center...Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino de Las Vegas, Nevada. Fools crassly and prematurely predicted Bandido would be meekly led to the slaughter and fold supine like a vacillating bovine victim, for mighty Miura, dubbed the “Mexican Assassin” to sacrifice like a ram in a burning bush. The Japanese Samurai, had already vanquished, putting to the sword and dispatching Gamaliel Diaz, Sergio" Yeyo" Thompson, Dante Jardón and Edgar Puerta.

“Well, I believe that sooner or later we will have an outright

war. Salido is a fighter who never gives up. He has been

world champion 3 times. It is a fantastic challenge. Salido is a fighter who also never, ever

goes backwards. –Vargas-

Wake up? For the uninitiated, this was indeed the night when destiny decreed “Bandido” would indeed avenge his Mexican brothers, shaking and rattling the rock hard cranium of the then seemingly invincible world champion, with a Thor like right hands that shocked, confounded and befuddled mighty and fearless Miura. Try as he might, Takashi simply couldn`t shake off the pulverising pulsating shock of this lightning strike, and Tony Weeks had to save him from his own valiant but inprudent, hopeless and hapless courage at a minute and 31 seconds, of that turn around fateful ninth. Don`t whatever you do discount Orlando “Siri” Salido. it`s never over until the fat lady sings. None are more totally valiant, none are so resolute. Never say quit. And like so many slow starters, late developers yet golden achievers, Orlando weathered a deceptively stuttering and confusingly mediocre start. Five defeats and 1 draw in 15 fights. People and genuine experts who can really see, identified the tenaciousness and dedication which drove this man on and on to become a fabu lous wor ld champion who audaciously faced and fought great fighters including, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Juan Manuel Lopez, Cristobal Miky Garcia, Vasyl Lomachenko. This list goes on...... The people in the know understand without having to be told the patently obvious, that Orlando Salido "Never quits." Home or away, he`s fully focused and utterly oblivious of anyone and any sentiment, apart from his opponent, Referee and his corner men. If you`re a true fight fan and you love witnessing the first hand unmatched courage of Mexicans, you`ll be a c ab ron to m i s s Or l ando Vs F r a n c i s c o. Tr u e g r e a t n e s s happens...but seldom.

This made us to think about boxers that have had the opportunity of getting inside from the ring on the screen. But also, there are some examples of leaving the screen to use gloves without any problem. BOXERS PLAYING BOXERS Before “Bomber” Bellew, there was Antonio Tarver, former WBC light heavyweight world champion, that played the bad guy on “Rocky Balboa” (2006). Max Baer, heavyweight, was a comedian along with the light heavyweight world champion, Max “Slapsie Maxie” Rosenbloom (289 fights) during the great depression. Baer would be played by the actor actor Craig Bierko in “Cinderella man”(2005) with Russell Crowe. MEXICO In Mexico, boxing has been a l w a y s b e l o v e d b y m a n y thousands of fans. There are also several actors of the last century who found in boxing a way of life. That’s the case ofMario Moreno “Cantinflas”, who even before his first steps in comedy at the mobile circus, he got purple eyes more than once. Chespirito, icon and inspiration of the Bee Man character in the Simpsons ( areal fact), also practiced amateur boxing during high school, being sub champion on his first year and champion of

the tournament afterthe second one. Rubén “Púas” Olivares, from Tepito, considered an authentic idol of Mexico, participated during several decades in a series of Mexican comic movies. Other great actors were “Pajarito” Moreno, Raul “Raton” Macías, “ G a t o ” G o n z a l e z , J o s e “Huitlacoche” Medel, Kid Azteca and “Baby” Vazquez. Mickey Rourke, the star of the erotic film “Nine weeks and a half”, during the pinnacle of his career decided to fight with the nickname of “Marielito”. He won 27 victories and 3 defeats. The fame as actor came during “Sin City” (2005) . Followed by big hits including Iron Man 2 and “The wrestler.” SPECIAL MENTION Bob Hope was an entertainment genius. He had a brief boxing career when he was 16. He had 6 bouts using the ring name of “Packy East” in 1919. There are people that say he provoked laughs rather that fear, eventually he would become a monster of the Amer ican comedy. He was beloved for offering shows in Vietnam bringing joy and laughter to the troops. In 1948, at the age of 45 years he agreed to return to the ring at

Madison Square Garden against no less than the heavyweight champion, Jack Dempsey in a fundraising card for the Air Force . Hope in an amazing batt le defeated the champion at 14 seconds of the first round. Twenty years later he fought against Rocky Marciano in the same place to raise funds for "Salute to the USO". Bing Crosby was the Ref, delighting 19,000 fans in May 68. Obviously, jokes c a m e t h i c k a n d f a s t , a n d everyth ing ended in a "No Contest". Sugar Ray Robinson was the last "victim" of Hope. They clashed on April 21, 1972 in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California in order to raise funds to the "Sugar Ray (Robinson) Youth Foundation". It also concluded in a no contest. Bob Hope started in the ring, but he changed it for the set and for the love for his country he returned to the ring.
