THE FLAG OF VANUATU The Vanuatu chain of islands is in the shape
of a Y, and the yellow horizontal Y on the flag is representative of same, as well as yellow being symbolic of sunshine; green symbolic of the fertile lands, red symbolic of bloodshed for freedom, and black represents the Melanesian people that originally settled the islands.
SIZEArea: Land--12,190 sq. km. (4,707 sq. miles) archipelago( is a chain or cluster of islands that is formed tectonically) of 83 islands. Comparative area--about the size of Connecticut.

POPULATION
The population of Vanuatu is 94% indigenous Melanesian. About 33,700 live in the capital, Port Vila. Another 10,700 live in Luganville (or Santo Town) on Espiritu Santo.
Although local pidgin, called Bislama, is the national language, English and French also are official languages. Indigenous Melanesians speak 105 local languages.
